Ok - just saw this past Sunday on the Discovery channel. The story of Tim Treadway. Beautiful footage of Alaska and the brown bears. It eventually turns into an introspective look at a troubled individual, to say the least.

Worth a watch and it's directed by Werner Herzog who lays out the story perfectly, provides good unbiased narration and allows the viewer to take away what he wants.

no spoilers here :) but you may want to check it out.

I haven't seen it yet, but it is on my list. Herzog is a director I've only caught up with recently but I've admired almost everything of his I've seen.

It's interesting that you say the narration is "unbiased." Most of the reviews I've read indicated that Herzog's view of nature is very much opposed to Treadway's. Herzog essentially sees it as cruel and uncaring. Perhaps they were reading more into it than what was there, or else Herzog just made his points much more skillfully than a lot of directors would.

The story that really defines Werner Herzog to me is what happened while shooting AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD. While shooting in the Amazon jungle, star Klaus Kinski threatened to walk off the film. Kinski claims that Herzog drew a gun on him and essentially directed him at gunpoint. Herzog denies this. He says he simply threatened to kill Kinski, then himself.

Despite this, the two of them made four more films together.

"Grizzly Man" is definitely worth seeing. I hate to be uncharitable, but any way you slice it, Treadway was a nutcase.

I didn't convey properly - unbiased in the case of Treadway himself.

Great story on Herzog, I was unaware. William Blatty fired handguns during The Exorcist filming and slapped the he77 outta folks. I think Hitch fired a few rounds off too.

now Zorro, give a little for charity~ MAYBE he had a few loose screws :-)

I'd pay good money to hear that final tape. Yes, I'm a bit twisted.

And I, too, have occasionally felt like shooting Klaus Kinski.

And running away with his daughter!

Anyone who thinks Tom Cruise is crazy should check out Herzog's documentary on his relationship with Kinski My Best Fiend (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200849/). (sic) If he hadn't become an actor, Kinski would have probably spent most of his life in an institution.

Fascinating film. Treadway was a major league nutcase. Herzog does a great job with it.

From what was said in the film, the tape will never be released, and the interviewer recommended the next of kin destroy the tape.

I think they should release the tape too. Kinda pointless yes, morbid? a little -but I did hear he was asking his girlfriend to hit 'em with the frying pan!
They would make more $$ for his "foundation" if they released the Director's Cut with that on it - right? Crazy, but crazy would have wanted it that way~

re: My Best Friend - Thanks BEB and interesting that Kinski played Paganini - pretty fitting.

The Herzog collection is part of the Anchor Bay sale I just posted about too. Hard to find a $41 match for it though.

I think it's clear that Herzog has a fascination for people with, shall we say, an alternate view of reality.
