Quote: "The DVD set will contain “Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters and Monster On The Campus. Universal has not yet revealed exact details about each of the films, such as special features, but with a low $19.98 sticker price, I would not expect too much in terms of extras."
I don't have any of theses either. Let's hope they do more sets too.
James :)
Ohio_Southpaw 08-16-2006, 04:29 PM I like how they always refer to the lowest of the B-grade films as "classic"... these things were poor when first released and are still poor today.
Zorro 08-16-2006, 05:29 PM Disagree that "The Incredible Shrinking Man" is poor. Agree that the rest are not exactly "classics" though.
Brent Gair 08-16-2006, 06:02 PM The only weak one in the bunch is the snoozeriffic Mole People. Incredible Shrinking Man is, of course, a very highly respected film. The others are held in various levels of regard but are all highly requested. I especially look forward to Monster on the Campus which is terrific fun.
When I hear blanket criticism of films from the 50's, I have to give the offending party the "Lee Harvey Oswald Test". If somebody can't tell me where they were when President Kennedy was assassinated, I tend to discount their opinion.
JamesDFarrow 08-16-2006, 06:11 PM Incredible Shrinking man was great. And I always thought The Monolith Monsters was great fun too. The Mole People as well. I don't recall Monster on the Campus though. Anyway, for $20.00 this is a steal!
James :)
JGG1701 08-16-2006, 07:46 PM  Hey now ! I really like "The Incredible Shrinking Man", exspecially the opening theme song. :)
ChrisW 08-17-2006, 07:46 AM While I'm familiar with Reynold Brown's poster for "Monolith Monsters", I've never actually seen the movie. I'll use your endorsement James!
love 'em all ! can't wait .

Guess Who 08-17-2006, 10:04 AM On other forums people have mentioned that the date may be out of whack. Sept 19 seems kinda fast for a just announced DVD release.
James :)

Let me see... 22 November 1963....
I was currently residing as an ovum in my mothers ovary... I can't recall if it was the left or right.. but since I am lefthanded, we'll say the left one for posterity.
Regardless of my location/state of being, I HAVE seen many of the 1950's horror flicks, and yes while a few of them are truly classics, IMHO the majority of them were stinkers.. just like the slasher films of today, one or two set or raise the standard and the rest are just a waste of good celluloid.

Largely true. But for those of us old enough to remember Oswald, most of those "stinkers" ended up on our local "Chiller Diller Shock Theater" when we were six years old - and we didn't think they were bad at all. In fact, we thought they were about the coolest stuff we had ever seen. I watched everything from "The Amazing Colossal Man" to "Teenagers From Outer Space" on my local TV station and while those particular titles don't hold up well to critical scrutiny, the sound of a Theramin still makes my heart skip a beat.
AFILMDUDE 08-17-2006, 11:25 PM Looking forward to seeing them all! Love the '50's sci-fi / horror.
BTW - Back in my childhood days Chiller Theater was responsible for many a sleepless night.
I was in 3rd grade. I remember it was cloudy on that day in DC. cool too.
Incredible shrinking Ma n was excellent, and Monolith Monsters had a very interesting effect with the monoliths falling over and the pieces began growing. The rest was all 50's schlock of course.

Sqame holds true for me, though born in '66. The others in that set may not live up to Shrinking Man, but Taratula has long been a fave. And I did see Monolith Monsters justa few years ago, and it's surprisingly good.
JamesDFarrow 08-19-2006, 07:55 AM Dang it - If you go to the link in post one again they raised the price to $29.98. I wonder if that's because all over net lots of people are really excited about this release.
The have the box art too. Nothing to write home about.
James :)
P.S. Mononlith Monsters - It is surprisingly good. And it's one of those movies that you figure shouldn't be. But it works. Don't know why, but it does. And it stars Grant Williams (from the Incredible Shrinking Man).
JamesDFarrow 08-19-2006, 05:46 PM More info!
Only available at BestBuy (it's an exculsive):
----------------------------------------------
A bit more info from DVD Review, posted today (8-19) - it's a Best Buy exclusive. Also, if you plan on getting it, pre-order now to save some $$$:
Finally we are able to let you know everything about Universal’s upcoming release of The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection. The DVD set, which will contain Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters and Monster On The Campus has been the grounds for a lot of speculation this past week, since we broke the news, especially since there was no other source of confirmation available anywhere on the Internet.
The reason for that is that this 3-disc DVD set is an Exclusive for Best Buy. This means that this box set will be available for purchase only at Best Buy locations and on Best Buy’s website. It also explains why the release will not contain any extras and why Universal did not make any official announcement of the title earlier or have information available through their regular publicity and marketing channels.
As we have pointed out here before, the DVD set will be released onSeptember 19 and has a $29.98 price tag. However, you can now pre-order the DVD set online on Best Buy’s website at a reduced pre-order price of only $19.99, which makes this set even more attractive.
Each of the movies in the box set features a brand new restored transfer but will come without any bonus materials. Make sure you order your title soon because with an exclusive promotion like this, supplies are undoubtedly limited.

(Herman Munster voice) "Darn!, Darn!, Darn!, Darn!"
James
Brent Gair 08-19-2006, 07:03 PM Well, James, fortunately you and I are Canadians which means we are accustomed to getting screwed by these exclusive deals. From the Best Buy website:
"We are not able to ship internationally to other countries."
Well, that answers that.
Of course, there's Best Buy Canada. But let's not kid ourselves. Remember all the Toys R' Us exclusive Polar Lights kits? Not carried by Toys R' Us Canada so we had to beg friends in the U.S. to buy them and ship them to us. Nothing like a little begging and grovelling to keep us humble.
Well, time to check my model stash. I'll probably end up having to trade off some nice kit so that somebody will send me this set.
big-dog 08-21-2006, 05:11 AM The Incredible Shrinking Man is great, but The Monolith Monsters is DA BOMB!!!!!!!!! Those 2 alone justify the price of admission. Not seen the others, but looking forward to, since this is on the absolutely essential list. Aint it amazing, movies actually used to be fun, less than 5 hours long, and you didn't want to psycho-analyse the crap out of them after seeing them. But, then again, I've been told I like immature movies. From someone I have absolutely no respect for. :p
AFILMDUDE 08-21-2006, 09:15 PM Got mine ordered!
JGG1701 06-29-2007, 09:14 PM I realize this is a "little" late but does anyone have an extra that they are willing to part with???
Thank you, :)
Jim
frankenstyrene 06-30-2007, 04:15 PM P.S. Mononlith Monsters - It is surprisingly good. And it's one of those movies that you figure shouldn't be. But it works. Don't know why, but it does.
Agreed!!! I think it's b/c the MMs are not actual monsters but are just big mineral constructs - natural occurances is all they are, and all they're depicted as. No intelligence, no purpose, no anthropomorphisms what so ever. That approach (and the noise they make) makes them creepier than, say, the absurd growling tornado of "Twister."
It's the only one of the collection listed I'd want. For all its other faults, it's one of those flicks with a high "wtf?!" factor, which I like.
Roland 06-30-2007, 04:26 PM I think we watched the "Monster on Campus" at Wonderfest 2007 on saturday night with Bob Burns providing a funny commentary. That one's pretty much a B movie. Some of the scenes reminded me of the gillman, in spite of the fact that the monster was a person with an ape or Mr. Hyde mask wearing a plaid shirt.
"The Mole People" and "The Incredible Shrinking Man" are arguably classic films. The other movies I don't recall seeing.
I can never turn these old films down, so I'll get them if I can. Preordering is not my style, however. It bothers me to pay up front and wait for several months...

I hate to tell you, but this is an old thread. The DVD came out last year. Evidently, JGG1701 didn't get one earlier this year when they were still readily available. If I remember correctly, some Best Buys pulled these sets in late January. I had to go to three different ones before finding the set I got in Slidell, LA. I'm not sure why they were pulled, but that's what happened here on the gulf coast. Finding anymore at this point may be a bit difficult. Of course, there's always ebay!
Roland 07-01-2007, 08:37 AM Phrankenstein,
You are correct. I looked up this DVD set on amazon.com, and of course it's not for sale there. But, it lists three sources that have the 3 DVD set for sale at a price around $200.00! No thanks.
Yup, Ebay will probably have it at some point...
Dave Hussey 07-01-2007, 06:07 PM That Brent feller sounds kinda familiar!! ;)
Huzz:wave:
Just Plain Al 07-01-2007, 08:17 PM You can tell this is an old thread because according the member list Brent hasn't visited Hobbytalk since last October (and I kind of miss him).
The-Nightsky 07-01-2007, 08:24 PM I picked this set up around Christmas, paid $19.98 for it at BB. I Love it.'Specialy Mole People as that reminds me of my childhood.
JGG1701 07-01-2007, 09:57 PM Well , I thought it was worth a try reguardless if it was an old thread. :(
scotpens 07-02-2007, 01:53 AM Agreed!!! I think it's b/c the MMs are not actual monsters but are just big mineral constructs - natural occurances is all they are, and all they're depicted as. No intelligence, no purpose, no anthropomorphisms what so ever.If The Monolith Monsters strikes your fancy, check out two other SF flicks from that era -- The Magnetic Monster and Kronos. All three are unusual in that the menace is not a living or sentient being, but just a mindless thing that keeps growing . . . and growing . . . and growing . . .

That's sounds like The Blob. The Blob used to scare the *@#$ out of me when I was young. Here was somthing that could quietly sneak up on you and squeeze under your door to smother and devour you.
The Batman 07-03-2007, 11:24 PM Whether you got the Sci-Fi set or missed it you should be aware of two more dvd sets that Universal has in the works right now. This news is not quite official yet but here it is as posted on the Classic Horror Films Board:
New Universal Titles Coming!
I just received this e-mail response from Hollace Davids in regards to my e-mail:
Quote: I got a response to your thoughtful email. The good news is there will be two 5 film collections released this fall exclusively at Best Buy with 10 of your requested titles:
Sci-Fi Collection:
- Deadly Mantis
- Leech Woman
- Land Unknown
- Cult of the Cobra
- Dr. Cyclops
Horror Collection:
- Horror Island
- Man-Made Monster
- Night Monster
- Captive Wild Woman
- Black Cat (1941)
We appreciate the fans and by all means spread the good news of the 10 coming. And we continually release Universl classics so there may be more!. Keep in touch!!!! Even though they're once again Best Buy exclusives (at least at first) at least there's some stuff coming. Unfortunately, still no Island of Lost Souls. I don't know if the e-mail helped or these were already in progress, either way good news. It also sounds like more will be coming in the future. So everyone buy these titles and show Universal we're willing to support classic horror and sci-fi releases.
