Have a 18hp briggs and stratton twin, which has sat idle for a couple of years. Started up ok, but somehow the carb adjustments have gotten out of whack. It generally quits under a load, and sometimes the only way it will mow is if the choke is fully engaged. Can't seem to figure out the proper settings. It's just a mess. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thx

Its not the carb adjustments..... its the carb itself..... I'd suggest a good carb rebuild kit, tear the carb apart and soak it in carb cleaner, and blow it out through all the holes with compressed air.

thanks........that's exactly what i'm going to do. However, now that i've got the adjustments all messed up, is there a starting point for the adjustment screws, and is there a proper number of turns?

yes close turn the needle valve closed and then open it 1 and half turn and it will start then open it a little more and it should run like a charm thx

The carb adjustments were not messed with (ie he said they got out of wack somehow)

NOW setting for 2 years with the gas still in it, that gas is rancid/gummy even if stabilizer was used.
The adjustments are correct... BUT thats just as a baseline..... 1.5 turns out from all the way in snug... start the engine and let it warm up, it should not rev up and down at high or low speeds.... and should rev up with little to no hesitation.
