I haven’t made the final decision on the Regional races yet. The only one I can tell you for sure will be the Finals at Allen’s because of the expected number of entries.

Just like to add, you may want to add the last four digits of our zipcode to find us. Because our location is a fairly new development, some searches can't find Scott Circle. Use 68122-3053 only in your search and it will find the exact location.

Hey, Sonny, this sounds like a awesome league you've put together! You must be a very busy man these days?!

I would like to get my vote in for Spec tires in the Sportsman Stock 13.5 class. It would also be cool to require all three classes to run NASCAR 'style' numbers on the body. A main race with 3 'all black and no stickers' bodies running around is very confusing for the spectators! :freak:

Good luck with the league!

Hi Chad,

Yes it’s been a busy summer.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure the tire rule would really save that much. Tire wear in stock seems to be pretty minimal.

Agree on the car numbers. It will be covered in the rules package.

It's not a question of tire wear in my mind but an easy way to keep things simple for the beginners and those of us who are lazy.

BSR offers only 3 fronts and 2 rear compounds in spec tires.
Compared to 14 fronts and 12 rear compounds in normal tires. :freak:

we ran our first day of 13.5's on sunday and except for a little front tire wear there was no wear. i started off with 2.16 rears and at the end of the day they were 2.14's. thats great in my book. i did wear a right front out in four races but didn't even hurt the left front. i really don't think we're going to have a big tire bill with the 13.5. this is only my opinion for what it's worth. al

Just a couple cents worth. . . .
Let-Em paint whatever they want, I mean it is a hobby. We do need to clear the
confusion of "who's in the lead?" Just require the standard number on the windshield.

Whats next? assigned colors? ? ?

Hi Mr. Sparks how are you?

You can run what ever color you like but sorry I disagree with you regarding the numbers. Let me try to explain to everyone my thinking on this.

The goal of the BRL is not to produce an oval racing series, anyone with half a brain and an excel spread sheet can do that. My goal is to help rebuild or grow oval racing again. I’m using this series as the marketing tool or the attention grabber to draw people into our segment of the hobby.

Right now I’m spending most of my time working on the details and structure needed to make the series run smoothly. Soon I will be able to focus on the marketing effort that will hopefully translate into bringing in a new generation of oval racers. Obviously the first step is to try and get some oval coverage back in the trade magazines, but beyond that we have to find away to attract from outside of the hobby world. This won’t be easy and it wont’ happen overnight but I have some ideas.

I need potential new hobbyist to instantly make the connection that what we are doing is a smaller version of what they see on TV or at their local short track every week. We want to show them that R/C is a form of racing that is real, that is affordable, and something they can get involved with.

If you look at full size oval racing cars around in the country you’ll notice they all have numbers. If it’s a stock car there usual on the doors and roof. Most sports cars or road racers do not. They have their own look usually with sponsor logos between the axles and numbers that are very small on the windshield or just behind the upper front fender. If you put these two cars side by side most race fans will easily be able to tell you which is the oval car and which is road racer. The numbering style of an oval cars have an identity that is easily recognizable.

In my opinion of the years R/C oval cars have lost their identity, when the average person sees them without numbers they can’t identify with them. To a newcomer an oval bodies without numbers may look just like the touring cars they see plastered in every magazine. To help get oval back on track we have to do the little things they make us stand out and look different. We have to make some changes.

Understand I’m speaking from experience this isn’t my first rodeo, I’ve been around and I’ve proven this theory before on the local level and now I’m out to do it on a National level. I’m not doing this for the money or as a front for some sponsor I’m doing this because I love our style of racing and I think I can help make a difference. Look around no other organization is out there doing anything measurable to help put oval back in the mainstream. Organizing a couple of so called National events that are about the size of a good club show is not promotion it’s pathetic.

I know some existing racers may disagree with my decision on this. If so I’m sorry but if adding a few numbers to the doors and roof of their cars keeps them from racing then so be it! As a race director I learned a long time ago you can’t make everyone happy. I would much rather spend my time working and racing with those who get what we are trying to accomplish then worry about the ones who don’t.

Bottom line we’re going to put on a great series this year, we’re going to bring some people back into racing and we’re going to do out best to try and bring in some new racers. I hope you will make the decision to be a part of it.

Right on Sonny,
I'm looking at the feb 1988 issue of radio control car action. it has the race from whippoorwill i see a full track of r/c cars 300+ and they look like nascar cars on the track. I remember that bob wanted the cars to be realistic looking so we had to put the door stickers on the cars or they would not pas tech (Door Stickers mr Hanson & Johnnytanline thats right!) Also in that issue it has 9 title articles about nascar and oval racing relating to the hobby. have not seen that in any magzine in a long time. Its time to bring oval racing to the front again!! All that space between the front wheel and number is for contingency decals maybe you could come up with some prizes if we win and have the sponcers sticker on the car. the BRL is going to be fun to compete in.

You have a lot of good points Sonny!!

I personally Love the idea of everyone having numbers on their cars. From the day I started RC racing, I've had a # on my car. Bet ya cant guess what it is? :D

At our club I've had Spectators come to me (I announce the races) and ask if When I annouced whos leading, if I could give Car #'s and colors so they can know who is actually out front. It sucks when you have to say, "well the first black car coming by is the leader. The 2nd black car..........right there!! is in the 3rd, and so on.

Just like Sonny said, I think having #'s will help Spectators (potential new racers) relate much better to what they see on TV and at their Local track.

I had to go look at how they did it...not too bad with letter in there (last name) so you get 26 people with the same "number" but not with the same number...

Sonny --

I think you are right on the mark with with the car numbers, etc.

I too remember back in the early 90's when we had fields of 50+ cars ALL painted and decaled as replicas of Winston Cup cars -- right down to the "Goodyear" decals on the tires.

And at a track here in Wisconsin, we had Kyle Petty attend one of the races where he autographed a replica body of his car and then we raffled it off -- and there were a TON of spectators drawn in by this.

Also -- when the cars looked like real Winston Cup cars, we had a LOT more spectators -- they looked forward to race night and they would show up and you'd hear the crowd yelling "go Earnhardt" or "come on Rusty !!" .. etc. There really is that connection thing -- it's real.

I'll be running the 13.5 class this carpet season and am super happy that we won't have those wings on the cars and the backs will be left in -- I think they'll look great. Look for the black #3 Goodwrench car :-)

Thanks again Sonny !

Hey Sonny,

Just a thought about a spec tire rule for the 13.5 class. You stated that it will be a class for the beginner as well as the seasoned racer, would it not be better for the beginner to show up at all the differant tracks with the 5 differant compounds of tires making a total of 10 tires, and him know that he has the same 5 compunds that all 50 other racers have or the beginner have to worry about what tires to get for the differant tracks with 26 compounds to choose from, its not about tire wear, its about tire cost and how easy it is to select a tire to race on. The potential saving could be really big for some racers.

By the way, this is a great move for racing.

Sonny B
09-12-2006, 01:13 AM
I thought about it but at this point there are as many negative as there are positives about doing something like that. It may be something we look into in the future.

In reality most of the fast stock racer only use a couple of tire compound.

I hope that we can educate the new racers and get the various tire manufactures to recommend a setup for the sportsman stock class. With amount of cars we will have at each race and the expected traction level I think you will find the tire setup will be the same at almost all of the events.

i have no doubt that when we get ready to go to a new track all you will have to do is ask some of the local racers an idea of what compounds work and they will give you there setups that will work so you don't have to carry that many tires.

Just a note from the USR/C Latemodel Series...Go Get-em BRL. Looks like a fantastic program with HUGE potential. Your passion is what the sport of R/C Oval needs. "YES" to numbers on the doors. (I too announce and it is tough to keep them straight for the fans).

Before the e-mail comes "Ohhhh YES there are going to be LOTs of fans at these BRL races"... you can count on that. The combination of the new brushless motors with a well organized and exciting program will bring would be racers AND family members out to see the show.

Good luck and we will be communicating the BRL program to our racers within the USR/C Series.

Dawg,

I need an artist to do a nice SWTour logo (Something that is beyond my small skills..)

I'm seeing and hearing a lot of good things about this BRL, great job SONNY.

The BRL is bringing in ideas that I've had for a long time, I'm just too short of time and help to pull off a lot of it. As a one man show, it's hard to cover all ground.
