Brent Gair 10-07-2006, 06:47 PM This was just posted by Robert Harris (a very reliable film archivist) at hometheaterforum high definition forum:
"Word has been leaked that Warner has plans to release new HD transfers of the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty, a 65mm anamorphic production, as well as Forbidden Planet (CinemaScope) in November."
This is not surprising as FORBIDDEN PLANET was known to be slated for an HD DVD release soon. Based on this info, I'll skip the upcoming SD release although I hate to miss out on the Robby collectibles.
One of the oddities about the HD DVD release schedule is that some titles are announced almost as surprises about 10 days before release. WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY was announced little more than a week or two ago and it comes out this Tuesday.
Zombie_61 10-09-2006, 06:52 PM Who is going to get the one with the little Robbie with it?Not me. If I wanted a badly-done Robby figure, I'd just build my Polar Lights kit. :p
Just for the sake of clarification, that was an insult to my modeling skills, not Polar Lights' Robby kit. I don't want anyone to get angry because they think I've insulted their favorite kit.
Trek Ace 10-09-2006, 11:58 PM I will be getting both DVD and Blu-ray versions of Forbidden Planet. It's just that good. One of my all-time favorite films. A true classic.
Dave Hussey 10-10-2006, 01:06 PM Badly done? Now now Zombie, I'm sure you can do a fine job of Robbie. ;)
Brent - any idea if the HD version will include the same special features as the already-announced special edition dvds? I could forgo the Robby to get the HD version if I got those special features with the HD.

Brent Gair 10-10-2006, 01:36 PM Huzz, no official word yet but to the best of my knowledge (and I'm not an authority), the HD DVD releases from Warner have included all of the special features of the standard DVDs. I know WB has a couple of different standard def versions of FORBIDDEN PLANET coming out so that might complicate any prediction.
By way of example, I bought the HD DVD version of THE DIRTY DOZEN (which I can't watch because I still don't have a player!). It includes the movie (149 mins). It also includes the 1985 "Next Mission" sequel movie (95mins). Two new documentaries. Vintage Marine Corps documentary with Lee Marvin. Vintage featurette. Intro by Ernest Borgnine and a cast commentary. That's all on one disc.
I believe that's the same as the the features of the two disc SE regular DVD.
So Warner Brothers isn't skimping on HD DVD extras so far. I imagine that they will put as much as they can fit onto an HD DVD.
As much as I like Robby, I'm not a really a big Robby collector so I can forgo the figure as well. I already have the original FORBIDDEN PLANET DVD which is "watchable". Although not labelled as such on the package (one of the early screw-ups), the original is actually anamorphic and looks quite accceptable on a big screen.
Had the new standard def version of the DVD been released 6 months ago, I surely would have bought it. But I am in that transtional phase. HD DVD players have dropped $150.00 (fomr 699.00 to 549.00) at Future Shop in the last month. HD DVD discs are being sold at three stores within walking distance of my house. So I'm implementing a policy of not double-dipping on standard def titles if an HD version is in the works.
bert model maker 10-10-2006, 02:10 PM what am i missing on that link ?
Zombie_61 10-10-2006, 04:52 PM Badly done? Now now Zombie, I'm sure you can do a fine job of Robbie. ;)You obviously haven't seen any of my build-ups. But thanks for the vote of confidence Huzz!
what am i missing on that link ?Forbidden Planet is being remastered and re-released on DVD on November 14th. You can purchase two different packages; one is a two-disc set, the other is the two-disc set plus a set of collector cards and a Robby figure in a collectors tin.

bert model maker 10-10-2006, 06:56 PM that is a neat little Robby. Hard to tell how big it is, anyone know how tall it is ?

The Robby figure is shown right in front of the DVD boxes and appears to be about 4" tall. In fact, he looks just as tall as his picture on the DVD box.
Zombie_61 10-10-2006, 11:33 PM They'd probably generate more sales if they had included an Anne Francis figure instead.
bert model maker 10-11-2006, 12:53 AM thats a good size, he would work well with a lot of diorama scenes.
