View Full Version : DVD WARNING! A movie to avoid!
modelnut 08-03-2006, 09:38 AM Walerian Borowczyk's The Beast or La bete (3-Disc Special Edition) (1977).
I am a confessed old story junkie. I love to see old stories get retold and respun. I have so many versions of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Cryano deBergerac" either in print or on VHS and DVD that I don't really need anything more to keep me amused.
But I came across this movie on amazon (while hoping to see that Ron Perlman's old TV show would finally be released in a DVD set - I can dream can't I?) Anyway, I saw this movie listed and the reviews sounded so tempting that I had to buy it. I snatched it up!
I watched it last night.
I think I have been scarred for life. :drunk:
It was even worse than The Truth About Cats and Dogs  (A lame retelling of "Cyrano".)
Instead of a tale about the redeeming power of love (which is what most versions tell) Mr. B's movie is a half-hearted sermon against bestiallity!
The man starts out lame. Then the story picks up and shows a little promise. And then it goes right over a cliff!
Do yourself a favor. Do not watch this movie. Watch the Disney version. Watch the Fairytale Theater version or a lame cheap cartoon. Watch Sherilyn Fenn in "Meridian - Kiss of the Beast" even (it's a trip but it isn't all bad --- not for kiddies though.) But do not watch this movie!
Save yourselves!
Warn your friends!

PhilipMarlowe 08-03-2006, 09:51 AM I'm always surprised how this movie gets good reviews, it's definately weird-with-a-beard. Not to mention pretty gross.
Ohio_Southpaw 08-03-2006, 09:51 AM Have you seen Rigoletto?
phrankenstign 08-03-2006, 10:43 AM Avoid Ghosts of Mars at all costs. I'll never get the time back that I wasted watching it. I saw the movie the week the DVD came out. To this day....I feel cheated.
john guard 08-03-2006, 02:36 PM any Peter Jackson film.
overblown and overrated.
El Gato 08-03-2006, 03:27 PM Just had one the other day: Napoleon Dynamite. Either I'm no longer young and hip or the movie's incredibly stupid.
Yo Homeboy 08-03-2006, 04:34 PM Just had one the other day: Napoleon Dynamite. Either I'm no longer young and hip or the movie's incredibly stupid.
No you're still hip. The movie was stupid. I tried to watch it but after a few minutes I just couldn't see any humor what so ever in it.
nothing to see here . erronious post .

sbaxter 08-03-2006, 04:53 PM Just had one the other day: Napoleon Dynamite. Either I'm no longer young and hip or the movie's incredibly stupid. That's a very strange movie. I know people who love it. When I tried to watch it, it seemed to me that every character is in dire need of a nap, to the point that it made me sleepy myself. But despite all that, it sticks in my memory. I told my girlfriend (one of those who loves it) the other day that I had decided it was the best movie I ever saw that I really don't like.

Ohio_Southpaw 08-03-2006, 05:00 PM Couldn't stand that movie either... Loathed "Sideways" just as much.

John P 08-04-2006, 07:43 AM I thought the thread was gonna be about "Showgirls"...
Jim NCC1701A 08-04-2006, 05:55 PM Couldn't stand that movie either... Loathed "Sideways" just as much.
My boss passed me a copy of Sideways to watch. Seeing as he knew I'm a recovering alky and the film's touring all those wineyards I thought it was an odd choice...
Zorro 08-06-2006, 03:06 AM Love "Sideways". Love "Napoleon Dynamite". Two of the funniest movies I've seen in years. And they both bear multiple repeat viewings. You guys are crazy.
The Batman 08-06-2006, 08:07 PM Love "Sideways". Love "Napoleon Dynamite". Two of the funniest movies I've seen in years. And they both bear multiple repeat viewings. You guys are crazy.

John P 08-09-2006, 07:46 AM I picked up "Gwendolyne" just for kicks, because it had Tawny Kitaen naked on the cover, and I was hoping for something nice and raunchy.
Oy. The first half is a really REALLY bad, tongue-in-cheek Indiana Jones ripoff. Not much in the way of nakedness there, and some really inappropriate gore. The second half concerns an underground city full of topless women in skimpy leather galdiator costumes. Well, okay, but somehow it just isn't sexy. Tawny is topless a bit, but not enough for THIS dirty old man. And in the only sex scene, she covers both herself and the lucky guy in a big ceremonial robe, and she's wearing a gladiator helmet :freak:
Not even topless Tawny makes this worth sitting through.

The beginning and ending of that sentence are totally unnecessary.

He did win a Razzie for it, and appeared up in person. Only he and Halle Berry showed.
