Make: Troy Bilt
Model: TB475SS

I think the clutch might be worn. I thought it was the drive shaft at first but I dissassembled all of that and it is in good order. My next step is to look at the clutch but I am having a problem removing the bell. It looks like a torx bit but I cant get down there with a torx bit. The hole is too small and long in the middle of the bell.

What was happening to it? making a pinging sound? slipping?
You need a long and slender (beleive they still make them like a screwdriver) torx driver.

It makes no sound. Runs like a champ but when you hit the throttle, nothing happens. (except for every now and then) I went and purchased a Torx screwdriver set today instead of using bits and that worked to get the bell off. The clutch looked good and so did the inside of the bell.

UPDATE

I found the problem. It was the lower shaft gear assembly where it makes the 45° bend to the trimmer head. The 2 gears in that were stripped and were not making contact. MTD wanted $50.77 just for that part. the entire lower trimmer attachment costs $60 at Lowes  thanks for the help though bugman
