I understand that it'll save distribution costs for the studios, yada, yada, yada. My question refers to the viewing experience. I've avoided going to a digital theatrical showing because of my experiences seeing the 20 minute digital commercial before a film showing. To me, it appears washed out and lacking contrast when compared to the film presentation. I also understand that video doesn't come close to film resolution.
So, am I off base here? Is DLP projection better than my experiences would have me believe? Or is this being pushed down my throat, to accept lower quality and higher admission prices as the video technology continues to evolve?

I've only seen Revenge of the Sith projected digitally, but I detected no shortcomings compared with seeing the film version. The only difference was that I saw it late in the movie's theatrical run, and film copies were showing wear and tear by that time. The digital projection was, as you might expect, pristine.

Remember too that a movie that is shot digitally and recorded to film won't enjoy any resolution benefit -- real or imagined -- than if it were being projected digitally.

Haven't seen a digitally projected movie, but I suspect (as sbaxter points out) the quality is comparable to a film print with today's technology.

The 20 minute infomercials are either projected using not-ready-for-feature-film technology, and/or the media itself is low resolution.

In the end it shouldn't make a difference to moviegoers, it will make a huge difference to production and distribution costs (reduced) which will somehow be shared with theaters that have to invest in new projectors. You can bet in 5 years (10?) we'll all be watching digitally projected movies except for some art-houses which will entice viewers with the sensuality of celluloid.
