View Full Version : "Thunder in the Desert" Oval Race in Phoenix AZ - Sept 16-17
swtour 07-20-2006, 11:33 PM Final details are being put on a 2 day race in September to be put on by the SWTour crew at the RCSM.
Sept. 16 & 17 (Sat. & Sun)
Being from the Cool California Coast I have "DAY" races scheduled, but in talking w/ Mike L. he made a suggestion about doing Saturday as a NIGHT event.
At this time, I'm unsure as to how many of the CALIF. guys will be travelling over, but hopefully those who do, will stay for both days.
I would love input from locals on race start time and any other thoughts you might have to help make this as exciting of a race as the July 4th event. (or more)
Please note: The SWTour series runs 5 minute Heats and Mains for ALL of our events. Since the "TOUR" does not currently run a "Expert Modified" class, if there is interest in that class and the racers for that class would prefer to run "4" minutes, we would accomodate.
TOUR CLASSES
Rookie/Novice (We always offer a rookie class for NEW racers. Stock motors, 4 cell)
4 cell Stock (Roar legal 24 degree STOCK rebuildable motors)
4 cell 19t Spec (Handwound Motors ARE legal, must meet ARCOR specs 19x1 w/ tagged arms)(non-handwounds are also legal, must meet ROAR 19t Specs)
4 cell "Sportsman Modified" This is our Modified Points class, primarily "NON Sponsored" drivers. (brushless OK)
OPTION CLASSES - minimum 5 "Pre-Entries" to make one of these classes.
NASTRUCK - Another "Sportsman" class. 19t or Brushless (in a sportsman mode) MAX BATTERIES 3300 mah (The battery rule may be lifted for this special event if there is enough interest in a truck class)"by Pre-Entry ONLY"
EXPERT MODIFIED - 4 cell (brushed or brushless motors and up to 4300 mah batteries OK)"by Pre-Entry ONLY"
6 cell TOURING OVAL - 19t (24 degree, machine wound only)"by Pre-Entry ONLY"
1/12th scale - (19t motors, same as spec 19 motor rules & 4 cell)
2 day entry $35.00 (first class) $15.00 per additional class.
Single day entry $25.00 (first class) $10.00 per additional class.
The SWTour awards placques to all "MAIN" winners. Other placques are available on request.
The SWTour uses the "Bump Up" procedure for main events. Normally top "8" qualify + 2 bump from lower main. (I'm hearing 10 cars is REALLY tight on the RCSM so this may be adjusted as needed)

2Groovy4U 07-20-2006, 11:50 PM Ok guys if your looking to run on one of the best tracks on west coast this is it. Maybe you missed the PCSO we just had you might want to think on making this one. 2 days in the sun racing with some of the best drivers around.
Thanks Joe for bringing the tour to RCSM we will make sure we have a good turnout. PCSO had 51 I would say we beat that by 10!!!
Scott M 07-21-2006, 03:22 PM Anyone in the Southwest region or planning a trip to Arizona in September should definetly consider this one!
Joe puts on one heck of an event as many can attest to and RC Sports Mainia and its operators are simply awsome!
Please visit the tracks' website to see pictures of the track and get details on paste events and upcoming ones as well. You can link to the track forum from there also.

tony 13 08-05-2006, 07:03 PM Hey Joe will saturday be a daytime or nightime event? I think it would help determine when we should fly out of nor cal. thanks!

THE DARKSIDE 08-05-2006, 10:56 PM Tempting.......
swtour 08-06-2006, 06:03 AM Tony,
Although it will probably be hot doing it this way, it's been decided to do both days in the day time, otherwise we probably wouldn't finish Saturday Night till midnight or later...would make it hard to get things rolling early on Sunday.
(Saturday)Current Plan is to open the gates around 7 a.m. and have the track open around 8 a.m. for practice. Hopefully qualifying will get underway by 11:00 (Maybe earlier depending on # of entries) 3 quals and mains each day.
(Sunday) Less practice, and hopefully start the first heat around 8 30 a.m. hopefully finishing up Sunday before 2:30
I'm flying in Friday night to Phoenix...not knowing my way around too well, and never having put on a race here...some things I'm going to be winging..but I've heard nothing but real good things about the track and crew...so this should be fun~
I sent a couple Flyers to Jake and to ScottM, I'll have them on the SWTour website by weeks end.
We will be using the AMBrc system, for those w/ personal transponders. (We will have loaners for those who don't)
tony 13 08-07-2006, 02:58 AM Mr Darkside whats up Eric?? It would be cool to see you out there, it will be just like the snowbirds but warmer :)
Joe thanks for the info that will make travel plans a little more refined. Hope to see you there

swtour 08-24-2006, 11:44 PM It looks like the 1/12th scale guys came to a consensus that 19t would be a better way to go. So it will be 19t and/or brushless in "sportsman" mode.
Darkside, Understood...keep the Colorado guys racing~
I'd love to come up to a race in Ft. Collins some time...It would give me an excuse to visit some family...if I could fit it in between heats...LOL
