View Full Version : looking to get into boating
oldschoolsdime9 07-18-2006, 10:47 AM So, I watched some impromptue boat racing recently and im hooked. I'm not planning on racing just messin around at the river, but im stuck between electric and nitro. I dont wanna spend the money of gas(as in 2 stroke 25cc type motors) and find out I hate it. So here are the two boats I have been looking at. Anybody have any pointers or thoughts on this?any help would be greatly apperciated

DARKSCOPE001 07-18-2006, 04:38 PM yes boath of those boats are very nice hulls. and they are very stable and built for beginers. but you mentiond something about racing. one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get into racing would be go get the plans for a boat and build it. many of the supplies you will need are avalable at your lhs and craft stores and man of these boats will cost less than 50 bucks to build and be very capable of racing. but if you want to get an rtr beginer boat the firehamers are boath very nice boats. and its realy up to you the whole electric vs. nitro thing. one one hand you have the clenlyness of electric and upgrades are relatively cheap. but nitro will let you stay out on the watter longer with your boat also the boat is likely to go faster but you will need to get tools and things like that to mantinance nitor engens also you will need to learn how to tune the motor. but nitro lasts a very long time. if you buy a gallon of nito you will be good to go for longer than you want to stay out there with your boat. by the time you run thrugh a quart of nitro you legs and stuff will be tired from standing there and watchin the boat go ziping by. so dont wory about the price of nitro.

well ive got two nitro trucks, a tmaxx and an rc10gt team, both run great, so as long as tunning is like a non marine engine ill be just fine,so i think im going to go with the nitro boat. thanks
mr_meat68 07-19-2006, 01:31 AM NITRO!!!
i would NEVER buy another electric boat again. get one with a v-bottom hull or semi V. if you're used to tuning nitro engines, you're already ahead of the game. get a friend to buy one too, it gets pretty boring in the water by yourself.... not to mention swimming out to get it when something goes wrong, LOL!
oldschoolsdime9 07-19-2006, 03:36 AM Im definitly not looking forward to the swim, but if i have to swim to play, then i will. Does anyone have any thoughts on a retrevial device? Theres a guy at the hobby shop that has a tennis ball on a fishing real, now how he goes about bringing his huge prather boat in, with this combination im not sure.
snickers 07-19-2006, 12:07 PM The nitro hammer is ok, but dont get the traxxas boat, for the money you would spend on the traxxas nitro boat get the Proboat Shockwave 36
DARKSCOPE001 07-19-2006, 12:43 PM lol whell if your not looking forward to the swim then maby you could ask a local pool that has like no customers if you could run it in there pool or something. even though the pool may be abandon I bet they still say no. so you had best pick somewhere to run it where you dont mind swiming after it. or i suppose you could get one of these. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9072005015693916165&q=hydro+foam
i shure hope that link works. man that thing is cool I want one but they say its not a beginer toy but hey give it a look and you will be impressed.

DynoMoHum 07-19-2006, 12:56 PM Yeah really cool... When I first looked into boats I cam across those HydroFoam things too... Handn't seen the cool video yet, because before I got very far into the search I read that they were really more or less for experts...
DJ1978 07-19-2006, 01:14 PM Don't forget the Traxxas Nitro Vee I think it is... It has an electric retrieval motor to get you back to shore when it runs out of fuel.
snickers 07-20-2006, 02:15 AM But sadly Dan, that is really the only upside that boat has.
tommckay 07-20-2006, 09:47 AM Retrieving is easy, I saw them doing it in Hawaii. Use a regular casting fishing pole with a good sized sinker on the end of the line (for casting distance) and put a large dulled down grappling hook style fish hook on it about 8-10" above the sinker. Simply cast out over the top of the boat, and reel it in. the hook will catch it. it may drag it in sideways or backwards, but just go slow & it's no problem. No swimming involved.
DARKSCOPE001 07-20-2006, 11:10 AM lol that large grapling type fishing hook you speak of is called a trebel hook. (sory im just a big fishing nerd also and i have to get everything right) that might work i would think it would take you a while to get the hook to grab especaly on a deep v. maby there is something else you can use like tie in multiple lines so that way you have like 3 trebel hooks and 1 sinker to help your odds of catching the boat or something. but i have herd of people retreving boats with fishing rods. i just dont know what you would put on there to acualy retrieve the boat. HMMMMMMM wonder if i could retrieve boats with my fly rod??? lol
