View Full Version : Now This is Just Sad ...
Zorro 07-16-2006, 11:07 AM Not quite as wonderful as the William Shatner "Rocket Man" video, but here, David Lee Roth proves that if your career falls far enough, you really can turn a "Diamond" into a sow's ear.

Wow! I made into about 3 seconds of the singing!
El Gato 07-16-2006, 12:09 PM :freak: :freak: :freak:
Sad doesn't begin to describe it. What's with screaming the last word in the verse?... although I'll give him points for trying something new. Or should I say TRYing someTHING new.
JGG1701 07-16-2006, 12:15 PM I... I.... I'm speechless ! :drunk:

Who is this type of music aimed for?
scotpens 07-16-2006, 01:10 PM Who is this type of music aimed for?Deaf people?
What's this guy been smoking? Sounds like he's doing a bad Roger Daltrey imitation.

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

That is an excellent question. It's almost the Roth version of what has-been actresses and singers do to "revive" their career: pose for Playboy. Yeah, OK, we've now seen your boobies but is that make us buy your new album or make directors hire you for their next project?
Zombie_61 07-16-2006, 01:30 PM What I want to know is, when, exactly, did he become Martin Prince from The Simpsons???

John P 07-16-2006, 01:32 PM All I needed to read was "David Lee Roth" to know not to click the link.
Never liked him.

 Thanks for making me spill my Crystal Light all over my keyboard. But that's Martin Prince, not Nelson.

Read somewhere that it supposed to be "Bluegrass" :)
phrankenstign 07-16-2006, 02:23 PM I hope the Kentuckians get into it because I'm pretty sure other Hoosiers will join me by fiercely and enthusiastically NOT buying it.

Here here !!! :p
yamahog 07-16-2006, 09:10 PM I think that he's the front man for "Brokeback Mountain: The Musical."
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
He sounds just like he did when he first released it with VH, so for me the "sad" factor is not the singing, it's the fact he hasn't written anything else any better. I think the complaint would be now that he doesn't have heavy metal guitars, synthesizers etc. drowning him out, he's got nothing to hide behind and we hear him for what he really is.
Zombie_61 07-17-2006, 12:05 AM  Thanks for making me spill my Crystal Light all over my keyboard. But that's Martin Prince, not Nelson. :lol:Muchas Grácias for watching my back, Señor Gato! For some reason I had "Nelson" stuck in my head.
big-dog 07-17-2006, 06:26 AM Compare this to Blackie's performance on 'The Sting'. See how a real rocker does it.
PerfesserCoffee 07-17-2006, 07:50 AM I kind of liked it. I like bluegrass and it was some pretty good picking. It was sort of bizarre in that it was a medly of Van Halen songs and comparing them to the original versions is a bit mind-bending. The only really annoying thing was Roth's sleazy, show business grin.
I've always thought there should be (classical style) country versions of rock songs, but I was thinking more along the lines of ABBA classics, many of which would lend themselves perfectly to the likes of George Strait, Clint Black and others.
"When you're near me, darlin' cain't you hear me--S.O.S.?" sung to twanging guitars would be really cool.
klgonsneedbotox 07-17-2006, 08:26 AM ...That is about the uncoolest thing I have ever seen...
I'm not sure I understand the concept...I have heard of rockabilly (sp?) AC-DC...but this is just silly...(nothing against the guys playing, they seem to be good musicians)...
I was gonna say, how did he decide that "Jump" would be a good song to do this with...but then I realized it really didn't matter...instead of the lyrics being "might as well jump, go ahead and jump" they should be "might as well jump, right off a cliff"...
El Gato 07-17-2006, 10:59 AM Muchas Grácias for watching my back, Señor Gato! For some reason I had "Nelson" stuck in my head.
No problem. Your Roth screencap was perfect to go along with the Martin picture.
Raytheon 07-17-2006, 12:41 PM Not a totally new thing.
How about Hayseed Dixie do the bluegrass country cover version of Motorheads 'Ace Of Spades' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd1kEJj2vWQ) ?
Make of it what you will :)
Zorro 07-17-2006, 06:19 PM And then there's the Paul Anka version ...
http://music.clevver.com/video/14520/paul-anka-jump.php
scotpens 07-17-2006, 09:28 PM Paul Anka doing "Jump" Sinatra-style? It comes across almost as a put-on. It makes me think of the Saturday Night Live bit with Eddie Murphy as Stevie Wonder and Joe Piscopo as Frank Sinatra recording "Ebony and Ivory":
You are black and I am white,
You are blind as a bat and I have sight
But you still can be my amigo, Negro,
Let's not fight!
But then, all the songs Paul Anka has written himself sound like unintentional parodies. They’re nothing but one cliché after another. At least the guy can technically sing.

Hey! That was cool, man!
You know, if you scroll up and down very quickly while the song is playing you can make Paul Anka "jump!" (Okay, so I got a little bored while watching it. :p )
jheilman 07-17-2006, 09:59 PM I hope the Kentuckians get into it because I'm pretty sure other Hoosiers will join me by fiercely and enthusiastically NOT buying it.
Well, as a Hoosier who married a Kentucky girl, we are both ignoring Mr. Roth's latest musical stylings. To quote Bill Murray from Scrooged, "Oh my God, does THAT suck!"
Zorro 07-17-2006, 10:16 PM Paul Anka doing "Jump" Sinatra-style? It comes across almost as a put-on.
Oh, there's a whole album of this stuff. RockSwings (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009A1BXG/sr=1-2/qid=1153187711/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-9766931-0999254?ie=UTF8&s=music)
To be honest, I'd rather listen to Anka doing "Blackhole Sun" than I would Rod Stewart warbling "My Funny Valentine". And Michael McDonald can kiss my pale white behind for his somnambulistic ruination of quite a few Motown classics. Some things are just inexcusable.
Zombie_61 07-17-2006, 10:23 PM I kind of liked it. I like bluegrass and it was some pretty good picking.Oh, I quite agree. There was nothing wrong with the musicians backing David Lee; in fact, I'd rather have heard them play without his singing ruining it.
or Pat Boone doing metal.....
scotpens 07-17-2006, 11:48 PM To be honest, I'd rather listen to Anka doing "Blackhole Sun" than I would Rod Stewart warbling "My Funny Valentine".Or Tony Sheridan, the British pop star who made some early recordings with the Beatles, singing awkward rock arrangements of songs that were never meant to be rock ’n roll, like "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Ain't She Sweet," and "Sweet Georgia Brown." Or Bobby Darrin doing a really bad rock version of "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby." Oops, my age is showing. . .
Nosirrag 07-21-2006, 10:48 PM Oh my God! I just know that I will be laying in bed late tonight trying to go to sleep and one or the other or both of those little gems will pop into my mind.
Or worse, they will creep into my dreams -- nightmares.
One has to wonder if these folks have any ability to self-monitor their behavior. I mean, can't they just see themselves and go "hey, what was I thinking?"
phrankenstign 07-24-2006, 09:22 AM Or Tony Sheridan, the British pop star who made some early recordings with the Beatles, singing awkward rock arrangements of songs that were never meant to be rock ’n roll, like "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean,"...."Ain't She Sweet," and "Sweet Georgia Brown." . . .
Actually, "Ain't She Sweet" was sung by John Lennon in those early recordings.
