View Full Version : Victorian Sci-Fi buffs take note...
Carson Dyle 07-14-2006, 02:39 PM One of the most promising movies on the horizon is a picture called "The Prestige." The company I work for cut the trailer (see link below), and if the rough cut I saw is any indication it's going to be one of the best releases by a major studio this year (and yes, that's David Bowie playing Nicola Tesla).

Arronax 07-14-2006, 03:40 PM OK. My interest is piqued.
Good cast.

terryr 07-15-2006, 01:19 AM Wolverine and Batman, together at last.
John P 07-15-2006, 09:02 AM Won't play for me. "Bad public movie atom."
Brand new computer, and people still find formats it won't play.
Carson Dyle 07-15-2006, 11:15 AM Hey, it's not like Quicktime is some strange, rare, exotic format.
Next time get a Mac. ;)
Griffworks 07-15-2006, 12:12 PM I can't get it to play, either, which is something that's been cropping up lately. Prolly has something to do w/my security settings, I guess.... :(
jheilman 07-15-2006, 12:43 PM Even with a new computer (PC) you need to download the Quicktime player. Of course, it ships with Macs like Windows Media Player does with PCs.
Cool trailer, I'll go see it. Nice to see Batman and Alfred together again. Hope to see them in a Batman sequel soon.
Steve244 07-15-2006, 01:12 PM Is this something completely new or is it based on some book/comic?
scotpens 07-15-2006, 03:06 PM It's based on a 1996 novel by Christopher Priest.
Steve244 07-15-2006, 03:42 PM Roger that. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312858868/104-5926368-3697511?v=glance&n=283155)
Carson Dyle 07-15-2006, 06:38 PM A word of warning to those who like to be surprised: the less you know about "The Prestige" before seeing it the better. Those who've read the book will know why.
This film deals with secrets; the importance of keeping them, and the lengths some people will go to steal them. When cutting the trailer we worked very hard to tease the plot without revealing secrets, and it was by no means an easy task.
So please... if you've read the book, kindly keep the spoilers to yourself.
The rest of you... beware of internet spoil-sports!
Hey, it's not like Quicktime is some strange, rare, exotic format.
Had Quictime on my first computer, and it tried to take over. It moved into everything including my still photos. So now QT will never reside in my computer.
Next time get a Mac. ;)
No thanks, I prefer a real computer.
David.

Sorry if I gave the impression of being a computer snob. Far from it; I may be the last guy on Earth who doesn't give a damn what hardware he's running as long as it gets the job done.
I was giving John P. a hard time because whenever I post what I assume will be a painless, trouble-free link he complains about being unable to access it. For movie trailers, the Apple Quicktime site is hard to beat in terms of image quality and accessibility, and I'm surprised to hear it gave him trouble. I've never had a problem pulling it up on Mac or PC.
In any case, as someone suggested, it sounds more like a server security issue than a glitch with the hardware.
I suppose another option is go see "Pirates" and catch the "Prestige" trailer on the big screen (Or not... My wife and I went last night, and neither of us was crazy about the movie -- and we liked the first one. With the exception of M:I-3 (and to a lesser extent "X-Men III") that's been the story of my summer).
Steve244 07-15-2006, 08:16 PM yeah, quicktime is pretty ubiquitous and benign. realplayer is annoying.
I keep itunes up to date (which includes quicktime) to feed my kid's ipod habit. But if I didn't have an ipod to feed I wouldn't have itunes. WMP for me too.
The flick looks good (thread topic). Does a fall release mean they think they missed the formula for a broad audience?
:p

Carson, no offense was taken, or imagined. I just thought that you were kidding, so I decided to kid back.
David.
John P 07-16-2006, 09:42 AM Broke down and downloaded the very latest Quicktime (which should have been already on my damn new Dell).
Trailer looks great! Can't wait till it comes to DVD!
Steve244 07-16-2006, 10:12 AM I was disappointed with all the crap that WAS installed on Dells from the factory. Very unprofessional.

And I got the Media Center edition! Billions of needless entertainment applications. BIG mistake.

Depends on your definition of broad. Disney knows a dark, cerebral, Victorian thriller like "The Prestige" ain't exactly gonna set the box office on fire no matter when it opens (although given the current hotness of the cast and director, I suspect it will do quite well). By opening in the fall, the studio avoids the dreaded Christmas Rush.
The tradition of opening critic-friendly, medium-budget, adult-oriented pictures in the fall began in the late 80's. Paramount, fearing "The Hunt for Red October" would get lost amidst the deluge of holiday "feel-good" fare, took a chance and went wide with the film in early October. This turned out to be a very smart move, starting a trend which continues to this day.
Steve244 07-16-2006, 02:45 PM I like fall movies. I like summer movies too. xmas movies never really did it for me.
