View Full Version : why is it so hard to find S scale trains savage66 07-11-2006, 05:26 AM and accessories? I would love to find some good placesto get S scale accessories and trains because the would go great with my 1/64 scale cars. does anyone know where I can find some stuff. scrambler81 07-12-2006, 08:08 PM American Flyer basically lost the toy train wars of the fifties to Lionel. Then HO and N showed up and took the lions share of the hobby. S scale makes for a beautiful train layout, but it just never gained a big enough following. There are a couple of companies that make S scale, but it is expensive. http://www.showcaseline.com/ www.americanmodels.com Also, www.lionel.com Lionel owns the American Flyer brand, and they issue a few pieces a year, both trains and buildings. free spirit 07-12-2006, 10:08 PM this is h.o. scale not perfect but cheaper than s. scale and easy to find. you might want to try it . http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/rclan/r%20toys/reserved/rainy%20day%20projects/diorama19gone.jpg savage66 07-13-2006, 06:31 AM this is h.o. scale not perfect but cheaper than s. scale and easy to find. you might want to try it . http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/rclan/r%20toys/reserved/rainy%20day%20projects/diorama19gone.jpg But some of the objects seem a little off scale, the People look about right and some of the animals, but the house is bigger then the barn and I haven't never seen that before and The garages for that scale seem a liitle small. free spirit 07-13-2006, 09:15 AM But some of the objects seem a little off scale, the People look about right and some of the animals, but the house is bigger then the barn and I haven't never seen that before and The garages for that scale seem a liitle small. the greenhouse .s are small they would represent a building about 8ft wide by 20ft long .the little yellow building on the right of the picture is a shed about the same size .the little white dog is a poodle so its small anyways the barn is small its a mini barn ,to me a diorama is just for fun .scale i like to get as close as i can .but if i wanted it exact s scale would be the way to go, if you go to a model railroad show sometimes you can pick up stuff for a good price when someone is getting out of the hobby we have s scale american flyer trains but my husband wont give me any of his stuff l.o.l. i can have any h.o. scale things i want, so i make do with what i have . free spirit 07-13-2006, 09:25 AM this is a h.o. scale garage http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/rclan/r%20toys/reserved/rainy%20day%20projects/diorama3alesneytowtruck.jpg anyways it was just to give you an idea h.o. scale is close if you get the right building scrambler81 07-13-2006, 09:29 AM Some of the Christmas village type buildings are also pretty close. If you go with some of the store or "no name" brands, they won't break the bank, either. savage66 07-14-2006, 06:34 AM the greenhouse .s are small they would represent a building about 8ft wide by 20ft long .the little yellow building on the right of the picture is a shed about the same size .the little white dog is a poodle so its small anyways the barn is small its a mini barn ,to me a diorama is just for fun .scale i like to get as close as i can .but if i wanted it exact s scale would be the way to go, if you go to a model railroad show sometimes you can pick up stuff for a good price when someone is getting out of the hobby we have s scale american flyer trains but my husband wont give me any of his stuff l.o.l. i can have any h.o. scale things i want, so i make do with what i have . I was just saying That i would like to use things that would come as close as possible when I get started in this adventure of building diromas, Sorry if I upset you, I was just saying that with what I am trying to do I would like to use S scale and that some H.O scale items are just too small. Thanks for the info and all the Help, I really appreciate it, Tell Your Hubby to share his toys with you,LOL I share mine with my daughter and wife. free spirit 07-14-2006, 01:10 PM i wasnt upset just trying to show that you can get away with some of the h.o. scale stuff sometimes my hubby shares all his toys . we have kids come to visit that play with everything. nothing is off limits to kids l.o.l. every now and then you hear a clunk and a train engine drops to the floor and becomes parts for the next one l.o.l. its all about fun with him anyways try a company called walthers they used to have some s scale stuff and a good model railroad site should be able to steer you in the right direction there are still a few guys who use s scale in model railroads as far as buildings you can allways build them yourself . its the way the old guys did it with model railroads before all the excellent building kits were around .once you get started with dioramas .its hard to stop. like the little cars you display on them its very habit forming l.o.l. but kids love them they can play with the cars we have a 4 year old visitor who checks all the cars to see if the hoods open and takes them all for a test drive .he likes to take off the rubber tires on some of the cars and then has an excuse to find a tow truck and hook the car up and take it to the garage for grandpa to repair l.o.l. savage66 07-15-2006, 07:50 AM Thats Cool and your right its all about the fun you have and kids have with them. I have tried building buildings myself and I like the way they turn out. Well I Thank You for all the Help. Keep on building those diromas, there cool.and make sure the little ones keep Grandpa busy,LOL.... free spirit 07-15-2006, 10:11 AM i had a v.h.s. tape that wouldnt work so i pulled it apart .curious to see whats inside found a little plastic thing it looked like a old service station jack painted it flat black and put it at the back of the 56 ford pickup on a angle, in the garage diorama it kind of looks like a old broken jack crude but you never know what you can find around the house ,that like a kid ,your imagination makes it something else l.o.l. free spirit 07-15-2006, 01:27 PM scrambler heres a christmas type house the one with the lights on its plastic but kind of neat its just a christmas ornament looks not to bad in the dark http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/rclan/r%20toys/reserved/rainy%20day%20projects/diorama31.jpg of course in the light the house on the corner does look not as good but with a little detail work it will look better , a project i havent got around to yet l.o.l. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/rclan/r%20toys/reserved/rainy%20day%20projects/diorama28winter.jpg scrambler81 07-15-2006, 06:56 PM Wow! I love the snow. What did you use? Woodland Scenics? I'm hoping to finish off my basement in the next 4 or 5 weeks, so I can put my layout back up. My new house is bigger than the old one, but it isn't that much bigger, so space is still somewhat limited. I hope to expand my benchwork to a 6' deep "L" shape, 11' by 13'. The plan is to give me enough space to run my HO track, and go a little wild with buildings and details, while still leaving room for my sons to run their trains as well. I have so much stuff boxed up and waiting to go, I'm about to lose my mind. I just want to get started! Just as soon as I finish construction. free spirit 07-15-2006, 10:50 PM geez and i thought i was excited about getting started on our basement my hubby wont finish ours till the cold weather comes, to many summer projects hates being inside in the summer . ive got boxes of stuff everywhere and am wanting to get started with a along the wall diorama and join them all together hoping my husband wiil add track at the back and make a nice long mainline but he dont want another model railroad he says your a slave to dusting it l.o.l. he likes his radio control airplane take it outside start it up and fly it, dust problem solved l.o.l. . sounds like you ll have fun when your house is ready to start your railroad, when you get it done post some pictures . by the way the snow is just plain old baby powder . kind of looks real ,if you look close you can see a plow truck in the night picture beside a building . the little guy uses it to plow the roads and make a mess but at least it smells nice. i told him make sure he dont rub his eyes with his hands while hes playing with the truck he plays for an hour then comes over and says wash my hands granma im done ,it cleans up easy. he has a gravel pit diorama with real sand on it he talked granpa out of his ertl collection of graders and loaders and backhoes and other neat stuff . savage66 07-16-2006, 08:00 AM Those are cool Spirit and very nice. Great Job. Sure hope mine look that good some day. free spirit 07-16-2006, 10:59 AM thank you , im sure if you give it a try you will surprise yourself , the first time i made a diorama was last october i had helped my husband before on his model railroad i did a backdrop mural but never tried a diorama and still learning and i have a critic who tells me all my mistakes and gives me advice but i dont listen i have to do it my way and learn from my mistakes l.o.l. but its fun and im very surprised that they dont look as bad as i thought they would ,but still a long way to go yet before im satisfied with them but it does prove a point anyone who has an interest in that sort of thing can do it ,the hardest part for me was to get started because i didnt think i could make anything that would look very good ,but i did take a little advice from my husband if you do your best and you arent satisfied look at what you dont like about it and start over and try harder and take your time after a few you improve and he was right the next one i do i will take more time and try get a little more detail in it , but i still think it is a great way to display cars i know the scale is wrong .but who knows maybe i will do a s scale diorama we have all the things i need and the old trains would be happy to get out of storage maybe a 16 ft by 8 ft diorama might give my husband a hint l.o.l. sure could display a lot of cars on it and now that i know a lttle more about how things are done i could be a critic of his work l.o.l. anyhow its all about fun post a picture when you get going on your diorama i cant get into any in the summer i cant keep interested .to many other things to do. but once the snow flys then im ready to go i find i like winter now .its a time when you get bored and this hobby you dont mind when it 20 below zero and the roads are covered in ice and everyone is complaining about the weather. gee dont bother me i got lots of things to do l.o.l. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
