View Full Version : Best Sci Fi Ships
El Gato 07-07-2006, 04:21 PM I found this ranking list pretty interesting. The author lists his top 10 coolest sci-fi ships. I don't know how old it is, but it must be fairly recent since he alludes to the "upcoming" new Battlestar Galactica:
www.plexico.net/ b4/coolships.html (http://www.plexico.net/b4/coolships.html)
I wholeheartedly disagree with his comments on the original Enterprise, and I would tweak the ranking of some of the ships. Any thoughts? What are your top 10?
Arronax 07-07-2006, 05:20 PM Obviously a big B5 fan but didn't include the Star Fury(?).
My top ten (but I'm sure there are some I've forgotten):
Klingon BOP
White Star
Vorlon cruiser (Kosh's ship - B5)
X-Wing
Romulan Warbird
Dropship ("Aliens")
Protector ("Galaxy Quest")
Excalibur ("Crusade")
Serenity
Moya
Jim
sbaxter 07-07-2006, 05:53 PM The only thing I don't undestand is why so many people can't simply say "I like x" without feeling they must justify their preference, at least in part, by saying, "I like x because it's so much cooler than y." Sheesh. I like Batman, but I don't feel I have to defend that statement by coming up with reasons he's cooler than Superman. I like Superman as well, but even if I didn't, the flaws I might hypothetically find with Superman don't have a thing in the world to do with why Batman is cool. It isn't as if Superman was an attempt to create Batman that went horribly awry.

El Gato 07-07-2006, 05:54 PM Jim - That kind of got me too. It's such a cool, little versitile ship you can't help liking the thing. Years ago we had a discussion in Cult's old forum about which ship you'd rather pilot:
1) Runabout
2) Colonial Viper
3) B5 Starfury
5) X-Wing
And IIRC the Starfury won hands down
Here's my top 10:
1) Star Trek TOS Enterprise
2) Star Wars Super Star Destroyer
3) B5 Starfury
4) B5 Shadow Ship
5) Galaxy Quest Protector
6) B5 Omega Class Destroyer
7) The Galactica (new and old)
8) The Klingon capital ship between the K'Tinga and the Vor'cha (drawing a blank here)
9) Star Wars Slave 1
10) Dropship
GLU Sniffah 07-07-2006, 06:06 PM Odd.
No mention of this in either the linked top ten or the prior posts...
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h91/Freddo6/BuckComp2.jpg
The old BR Starfighter would be in one of the top 3 slots in my list. ( still compiling...)
PhilipMarlowe 07-07-2006, 06:33 PM I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Millenium Falcon.
The Nostromo
The Moonbus
The BSG Viper
Serenity
The Valley Forge (Silent Running)
The 2001 Orion
The Blade Runner Spinner
The Valkyrie (Titan AE)
The Last Starfighter
The Aliens Dropship & APC
beeblebrox 07-07-2006, 06:34 PM Or this beauty...

ClubTepes 07-07-2006, 07:01 PM 1.) USS Enterprise (refit)
2.) Millenium Falcon
3.) Battlestar Galactica (TOS)
4.) Andromeda (Starblazers)
5.) USS Enterprise (TOS)
6.) Imperial Star Destroyer
7.) Super Star Destroyer
8.) X-Wing
9.) Yamato/Argo (Starblazers)
10.) Eagle Transporter (Space 1999)
I don't think people are 'justifying' their choices.
Just telling us what it is that makes that ship unique to them.
spe130 07-07-2006, 09:14 PM No one has mentioned any of the Andromeda ships. Say what you will about the series (which sucked outside of Harper and Tyr), the Commonwealth ship designs were utterly gorgeous.

El Gato 07-08-2006, 12:14 PM I want to drop my drop ship and replace it with the SDF-1 from Robotech...
1. Vorlon battle cruiser
2. White star
3. Minbari "Angelfish" battle ship
4. TOS Refit
5. Millinium Falcon
6. Empire Star Destroyer
7. Shadow Battlecrab (wouldn't wanna be the pilot though)
8. Jupiter 2
9. Klaatu's saucer
10. Polaris (Space Explorers)
Atlantis 07-08-2006, 09:53 PM No particular order.

toyroy 07-09-2006, 07:32 AM Hey, El Gato,
Thanks, for the great thread idea! I doubt I can think of ten designs I like, all at once, so I'll take this incrementally. So, in NO ORDER at all, here are the first I can think of:
-Jupiter 2/Gemini 12. A most elegant flying saucer design, and the only one I know of flown by the 'good guys', i.e., us humans.
-Original version U.S.S. Enterprise. I HATE how everything is re-designed for subsequent incarnations of a story. In the Motion Picture, they made few, or no changes to the Klingon battlecruiser. The Enterprise should likewise have not been changed. That we know as the refit design should have been a different, newer Federation ship.
-Both versions of Battlestar Galactica
-Original version of Cylon raider
-Darth Vader's TIE fighter
-Orion III from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
-Moonbus from 2001
-Eagle transports from Space: 1999
-Valley Forge from Silent Running
OK, so that's ten. But, don't be surprised if I replace some of these, if other designs I like are brought to mind.

It is one of ours, isn't it? :o
However, I don't care for the design.
spe130 07-09-2006, 11:52 AM In the Motion Picture, they made few, or no changes to the Klingon battlecruiser.
You're kidding, right? The numerous changes between the D7 (TV) and K'Tinga (TMP-onward) have been extensively documented and discussed to death on the internet.

drewid142 07-09-2006, 02:32 PM 1 Starship Enterprise (Refit and TOS)
2 Proteus (not a spaceship... but close enough)
3 Nautilus (also not a spaceship... but I don't care)
4 Discovery and Pod from 2001
5 Orion Spaceplane from 2001
6 Millenium Falcon
7 Imperial Stardestroyer
8 x-wing fighter
9 Lunar Module (not sciFi... but way cool)
10 Jupiter 2

Wasn't it in a Twilight zone ep. too?
Yep! Agnes Moorehead pounded the poop out of it and some of the crew too.
The "To serve man" episode had it too. The were REAL galloping gormets!

The "To serve man" episode had it too. The were REAL galloping gormets! The Forbidden Planet spaceship (full-size set, miniature, and/or stock footage) also showed up in the TZ eps:
"Third From The Sun"
"The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" (footage of saucer printed upside-down)
"The Invaders" (the one with Agnes Moorehead)
"Hocus-Pocus and Frisby"
"On Thursday We Leave For Home"
"Death Ship"

Pretty stacked for a spaceship.

So did the doomsday machine, from the original Star Trek. I don't think of it as aesthetically pleasing, but I do find it convincingly scary.

That's a correctamundo, Model Maker. You're cleared for landing, in the circular parking spot...
bert model maker 07-10-2006, 01:58 AM  i saw a nice landing spot from way out here, then landed here. thanks for the landing clearance toyroy, it was a long flight
big-dog 07-10-2006, 04:41 AM I'm getting to like ships that look like they could actually work more and more. The Enterprise is pretty, but it runs on magic essentially. My current fave is The Nostromo, big, industrial, and with those 7 huge engines it looks like it could work.
Love the Eagle for the same reason, it looks like a real spaceship.
The Betty is in the same category.
toyroy 07-10-2006, 10:32 AM ...thanks for the landing clearance..., it was a long flight.
Roger on that, Model Maker. I'm afraid you've got some 'splaining to do, about that OTHER touchdown in 1947 Roswell... ;)
toyroy 07-10-2006, 11:14 AM I'm getting to like ships that look like they could actually work more and more...
For that matter, I've always liked the looks of the Mercury capsule. And, the Apollo command module, with its service module. They kinda look like they might actually work. ;)
ClubTepes 07-10-2006, 12:42 PM I think that people shouldn't be able to count things like
"all the Enterprises" in a single line.
Thats almost like saying "all the ships from Star Wars as a single line.
Since there are differences between the TOS and the TMP Enterprise, even though they are the same ship, they should be counted as different designs.
I would be curious to see two different top-10 lists making a distinction between 'Capital' ships and 'Fighter/Shuttles'.
just my 2.27298 yen.
toyroy 07-10-2006, 07:48 PM I think that people shouldn't be able to count things like
"all the Enterprises" in a single line...
I agree. Especially since some, such as the original, are beautiful, and yet others, such as the Next Generation "D" design, suck poo. :dude:
I would be curious to see two different top-10 lists making a distinction between 'Capital' ships and 'Fighter/Shuttles'.
Um...which list would the Jupiter 2 go on?
Old_McDonald 07-11-2006, 12:23 PM I've always been a saucer man.
The original J2
The saucer from "The Invaders"
bert model maker 07-11-2006, 01:49 PM these are my favorite also, i am glad i have them.
toyroy 07-11-2006, 01:56 PM ...The saucer from "The Invaders"
Yeah! A great ship, for nefarious aliens.
Bert,
that "attached thumbnail" phrase gave me the creeps!
HowZ yer hand doing?
bert model maker 07-11-2006, 03:07 PM lol i just noticed that when you wrote that, it's pretty sore. i cant see under the bandaging but it feels like they had to cut into the back of my hand to find the other part of tendons. the feeling of being pinned by crushing force on your hand and no help anywhere must be like landing the space pod on a planet by yourself and getting your hand crushed and pinned and out of reach of the 2 way radio
X15-A2 07-11-2006, 05:01 PM My two bits (subs and ground vehicles do try to crowd to the front for mention as well but they are not included in the question being answered here):
1. Ship from "Planet of the Apes" (sometimes known as "Icarus")
2. U.S.S. Enterprise (TOS)
3. Thunderbird 2 (TOS)
4. Jupiter II
5. Space Ark (When Worlds Collide)
6. Disney TWA/Douglas Rocket
7. Lunar Rocket ("Frau im Monde")
8. Red Dwarf
9. Eagle ("Space 1999")
10. Valley Forge
It is difficult to form such a list because only a few are truely "at the top" (the first 4 on my list). The rest are part of a rapidly widening base with little difference between those near the top and those at the bottom. In reality, I love 'em all!
scotpens 07-11-2006, 11:10 PM I've always been a saucer man.I always suspected . . .

I like the Icarus, too. El Gato didn't say, but the list he referred to were all spaceships. So, even though I groove on T-bird 2, I wonder if it qualifies?
And, wow, it's been a long time, since I rode that Disney rocket! Interesting choices, here.
