View Full Version : Help! PAINTING WEIRD PLASTIC
RobDog 06-15-2006, 11:59 PM Has anybody found a good way to have paint actually adhere to some of the strange, greasy plastics found in Wacky Winners?
IE:Beer Wagon bed and Draggin Wagon cage.
I've cleaned the snot out of the aforementioned parts, tried spray and brush paints of acrylics and enamels..even Krylon "Fusion" for plastics...they all chip off.
In my past autobody experiences, I've used spray adhesion promoters for interior plastics, with some success.
I've also used "flex add" for rubber bumpers (to prevent chipping of hard paint on flexible surfaces) but don't want a permanent, retarded cure.
I'll be trying the adhesion promoter next but thought I'd ask for other suggestions first.
jnkfleet 06-16-2006, 12:17 AM Hey Rob
You might try washing the parts/area with rubbing alcohol first, and then apply your paint...What you are working with is more a polyvinyl (rubber like material) than plastic...I have also used clear nailpolish as a basecoat and then enamel (brushed).
If you think about it, email me your address..I got you a set of them BuddyLs with the wheels you were wanting... jnkfleet@myway.com (wanting...jnkfleet@myway.com)

jack0fall 06-16-2006, 12:57 AM I had the same problem and decided to give up trying... This is still a P.I.P on my work bench.

Hope you have better luck. Please post pics of your success (or defeat).

RobDog 06-16-2006, 10:18 AM Thanks guys!
Jeff F,I tried the alcohal previously,it did clean well but the results were negative.
I'll give you an email regarding the BL wheels,I really appreciate the help.
I painted the cragars to look like Magnums but it doesn't quite look right.
The TD "BADMAN" artwork that was given out with the FAO Wacky Winners set, shows the wheels to be more thin in the blades.
I did alter the suspension however,It has the drop down front wheels for the wheelie stance. The foil trim was a little tough but it turned out well.
Hopefully,I'll be able to figure out macro-zoom on my new camera, when I have completed a few more.
Jeff ,(JackOfall)
I like what you've done so far.
How'd you do the Beer sticker?
Where'd ya get the tail lamps?
jack0fall 06-16-2006, 11:00 AM The stickers are shrunken Beer Truck decals done on a ALPS printer by my buddy HDBiker. The tail lights are off of a Dragula and the chain drives are off of a mack truck model for train layouts. I am not sure if you can tell by the photo but this is sitting on a slim line chassis.
I finally found some chain that looks to scale but I have to make the eyelets to mount them to the posts. this is really small work for hands like Andre the giants... :freak:
I will get it eventually.

RobDog 06-16-2006, 12:38 PM I may have succeeded this time.
The adhesion promoter helped.(the second time around)
The key was very light coats, with good flash time.
On the first try,I sprayed on 3 wet coats of AP,(with flash time in between).
I then applied the Fusion enamel the same way.(1st coat was tack coat)
I returned to see, that it had bubbled like a Mo-fo.
not wanting to chip the paint off again,I used MEK.
(Yes,MEK didn't even melt it  it made the plastic clean but just a little sticky.)
2nd try: very light A.P. coats with plenty o flash time.
followed by,3 tack coats of the fusion, with ample flash time, then 1 wet final coat.
The draggin Wagons ( cage)paint is rock hard, the Beer wagons bed is doing just fine.
tomorrow,I'll do a final check on the total adhesion.
{added note:Hydrogen Peroxide made a great prep cleaner on the first experiment.Too bad my 1st paint "technique" failed.
It made the greasy plastic, squeeky-clean, plus,it evaporated very rapidly.}
Aerovette 06-16-2006, 02:52 PM I typically scrup the surface with a toothbrush and Ajax or soft scrub. I usually is just enough "scuff' for adhesion without taking off the details of the part.
RobDog 06-19-2006, 03:38 PM *update*
For myself, painting poly-vinyl has become a collosal waste of time.
While cutting off the plastic chains, the stress popped off the paint.
I think I'll go to the Woodworkers store and look into 1/16"-3/32" veneers for complete fabrication.
I'll need to make a bed for a TD,"Hangman" truck anyhow.
Thanks for all your tips.

RD, You are a man of great taste... The Hangman is the next project on my list... Great minds think alike.
Keep us posted.

RobDog 06-20-2006, 09:24 AM Are you usin the Barris ice cream truck for the donor car?
I'm thinkin it's the best choice so far.

jack0fall 06-20-2006, 02:59 PM That is the same thing I thought... Really wish I could find some deep dish wheels for these puppys... Still lookin for them...
I have been looking on the net for some more detailed photos of the Hangman as well. I probably will just end up finding and buying the model for ideas.
Jeff
rob i have one cut up already for the hangman but it would take to long to make the front body and seats are connected. in other words the seats are the front frame.
what a shame..
RobDog 06-20-2006, 03:17 PM hmmmm, well if I can almost construct a Rommels Rod out of 8 different diecast cars, then there may be hope yet.;)
On the hangman link (provided above,) Dave says the Hangman was of the same mold as the Dragon Wagon.
I do see similarities.(see the above pic)
Maybe the two donors together (HM cab and DW frame/bucket) could help.

I find that 100% HW's have a fine choice for deep dish wheels.
Pricey, yes but sometimes you can get em cheap at KB outlets.
I also found that the medium end HW's have excellent but somewhat plain deep dishes,(some even with tire lettering)
(They look really good on the "Ice T," that I'm just finishing up.)
I have a bunch of pics ready to post but I need to download them off my camera and into a file...then again,I think I'll need a free host.
here's the kit;
