Do BSR cap tire have a temp range? Something like pinks 80 to 90 degrees, greens 100 to 120 ......etc? I know when I ran on road rubber tires they had temp ranges.

Humpty

Not really..I run 3 pinks and a red year round on asphalt w track temps as high as 140degrees and hotter....without problems....

pepe

I think they used to have a temp range for certain compounds but I think we've found that it doesn't really apply.Like humpty said we can run with three pinks and a red even in the hottest weather and still be okay,it's really about the grip and foward bite that a particular compund will give you, that your after.

Other thing to condiser is banking of the particular track... weather its sealed or not..What type of sealer.. At some tracks , the class may have a bit to do with it as well..

Best way to find out what is best for a particular track is to test.. Nice thing about caps is when they are working they roll rubber.. When there not they can tear rubber. You can see how they are hooking up just by looking at them..

Tire temperature is also something to look at.. if you have a temp guage you can check each tire after the run.. a tire that is working harder will be hotter.. This can also be used to setup.. There is so many variations of possible tires that work..

We are lucky up here.. You only have one set of tires to really run.. You may be able to get away with something else, but not for long..Eventually you end up back where you stat.. CAP TIRES RULE..

I have questions about the 3 pinks and a red, where are you running the red, what sort of stagger and any nets?

pepe
06-16-2006, 04:33 PM
AJ,

We run the red pro lite on the left rear, normally we run pro lites on the left and nets on the right, stagger will depend on the feel your looking for.,I run L's on the left side a "S" on the RF and a "R" on the Right rear. You will need to experiment a little to get the right feel. That's the one thing I really like about the Super spec class we have here, everybody runs spec tires no experimentation involved.

Pepe,
Are you running the Pink Red combo on a concrete track or on asphalt? I,ve been running a Blue Net S Rf, Green Pro lite L Lf, Green R Net Rr and a Green Pro Lite L Lr, it normaly works well for me but I,m looking for a combo that doesent give up as much ( we run 5 minute qualifiers and main ) my car ( HD Pro 2 ) gets scary loose the last minute :p Tracks concrete semi low grip with four differant corners, 1 & 2 banked about 12 degree tight radius, flat ( but bumpy ) back straight 3 & 4 has a little less banking 10 degree? and wider radius 4 flattens quickly to the front straight which has a slight kink and a very little banking. Sounds odd but its a fun track to drive LOL. Any Ideas on tires?

I'm running on asphalt, what are you using for tire prep? we generally GM the tires for the first couple runs of the day, then switch to Stick-et.We only run 4 min rounds here so that will make a big difference,Maybe humpty can chime in he's a master at reading these tires. You almost have to start with a new set of tires when changing complete combinations, otherwise it's hard to tell what's really happening,If possible go to the Pink net "S" RF, pro lite pink LF, red pro lite LR and a pink "R" net RR,it should hook you up.

Thinking about trying a pink combo at our night race next week but not sure about a red lr. The norm is a Bnet s on rf, Bnet r rt rr, Bpl l lr, pink or green prolite left frt. this track to me anyway always seems hard to get the car off the center to the straight without a push. I usually loosen the car up so much and end up with a pushy loose condition. Thinking of a pnet s rf, pinknet r rr, pink pl lr and maybe a red on lf, any suggestions pepe or humpty

Can anyone tell me what BSR caps suit a 10L4 nitro oval with an OS .12CV engine on a velodrome? How long will they last?

I posted a recommendation of tires on the other thread you started. As far as how long they last....if you don't wreck and break one and your car handles well you could probably get many hours of running on them. I have some sets of tires from velo racing with up to 40 or 50 4 minute runs at speeds in excess of 60 mph that are still in good shape.

That's great longivity. I've never used cap tires before and just wanted to know that I was going to get $80 worth of laps. You can buy 2 full sets of foams for the price of one set of caps but caps are obviously the way to go and I guess the stagger would only change very slightly from one race meeting to the next.

Mark,

I'm glad somebody sees the light about the cost of cap tires VS foam tires, foams are much more expensive.

At Triclone, we run BSR caps and we can go almost a whole summer season on 1 set. Thats racing every Sat. and also a handful of 2 day events. Its all about setup and how you take care of the tires off the track also.Cap tire racing is the best way to race in my eyes.

pepe
06-24-2006, 08:41 AM
We can't go a whole summer season on one set of tires, but two sets will get you there for sure, which puts us at about three sets a year here.

Sealed asphalt can be very friendly for caps. At a night race this weekend, track temp went from 114 to 75 from afternoon practice till feature time. Tires came off the track as smooth as they were going out.

THANKS John & Kevin!

Good deal, and I thought all you florida boys were foamies,so there's still hope for a cap tire guy to visit and still be able to race.

Us Florida Cap Tire guys are a vocal minority. But since we are now running the FOCAR series of flat "foam" tracks we sure have the proof that foam tire racing is a lot more costly than Cap Tire racing. The big reason for the effective life of Cap Tires is the turn around of BSRs product since John Foister rebuilt the company. John is our HERO!!!!!!!

Bologna......you can check Dave Clary's RC conference at the url below:
http://www.deccosoftware.com/tracks/default.asp

Look in FLorida for Broward County RC Race Club.

We are also adding a new flat oval track within the infield area that will handle foams. We will offer both CAP and FOAM tire racing. Testing new track surface this week.

Bob some of us Ga. Boys want to come down for some cap racing also. We have the track in Branford and the one in Echoconnee. We even made a trip to Llail in Tenn. a couple of weeks ago so we could run caps. Are you going to have the big race in the fall again??
Bologna the track is right off of I-95 in Ft Lauderdale. Its in a county or city park. Its well lit, smooth, BIG and high banked. Its nice!!! Problem is most of the Fla. guys run foams and avoid caps like the plague, so turn-out is light.

Bob keep us informed about the race in the fall.

Yep Blues are wayy to hard for most of the surfaces we run on,try going down at least to greens and a pink left rear, if the tires are still smooth go on down to pinks all the way around.

I will say that Phil probably knows what he is doing, he won Saturday night at Storm Steel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a field of 24 cars and currently holds the track record there as well. The fastest Guys that this track are able to make a combination of 3 blues and a pink or silver work very well and the tires do come off the track very clean and smooth, just take some cleaner and hit them once and they look like new. The Track has nice banking and the run line is about 270 feet, fast laps at about 5.0 seconds.
It is a wide track and very smooth with room for some terrific racing.

I'm not disputing anybodies abilities,Some of the fastest guys at our track ran blues also, till we discovered we were loosing bite and could go even faster with the extra bite.A lot also depends on car set up as well but if the tires are wearing smooth your loosing bite and need to either soften up the set up or the tires.

Soft and gumball feeling is past broke in,I remember your tire selection for the norcca race it was with a wore out set of tires it wasn't a true set of blues and greens, more like a new set of pinks all the way around.

Pepe, I appreciate your input as well, I will not claim to have it all figured out, car was good but faster is always possible. This track, Storm Steel has sealer over asphalt, the tires look much different than when run at a concrete track we race at nearby.

We used to make a trip out there once a year, but we haven't drove out in a while and the last time we came out, two years ago, we flew,it's quite a road trip for us, I'm from SC.I'm thinking it will be next summer before we get out there again, but you can be assured that if we drive the RC gear will be included,LOL.
