View Full Version : motor shims
DARKSCOPE001 06-15-2006, 02:34 PM Hey can anyone tell me, I am have been using teflon shims in my motors for the shims that ride up against the bushing. but after a while the the shim becomes torn up. I was just wondering does anyone know if this is normal. hank said something about how the arm shifts up and down during acceleration and decleration so I was just wondering if this could be the cause. or mayby I am just shiming it to tight.I leave a tick of play in the motor (my definition of a tick is realy small though). or can anyone tell me if the teflon shims realy give you that big of an rpm and power boost or If its just better to run and buy only the brass shims.
Thanks
Sean Scott
ta_man 06-15-2006, 03:06 PM I always make sure I have a thin brass shim between the armature and the teflon shim. I only use one teflon shim on each end of the armature. It also helps if you polish the part of the bushing that the shim rides against. I have used the same two teflon shims on each end of a motor shaft for the entire com life of a motor, from brand new to too small to run anymore. I don't know how much difference it actually makes, but I figure every little bit helps.
darkscope....it does make the arm spin a little easier when the arm slams against the can. if you are using the type of shims you get at the hobbyshop then they will distort and get torn up pretty easy.
not to toot my own horn but i make and sell teflon washers that are the proper size and are a little larger in diameter than the ones you get at the hobby shop. go to the swap area and do a search for kvrc i am a site supporter.
JDish 06-15-2006, 09:45 PM kvrc's shims are top notch and do not flake out like the usual ones from the hobby shops, I bought 2 packs of 25 a while back, probably a couple of years, and have a lot left still, they just don't wear out.
DARKSCOPE001 06-15-2006, 11:10 PM Holy crap JDish you dont happen to race at platinam hobbies do you. I think I may know you. if not there is a man with the same screen name at platinam hobbies as you. But if you are who i think you are would you be willing to sell me a couple of those motor shims. and if not can I look at them and see what makes them so good.
Thanks

Ernie P. 06-15-2006, 11:36 PM DARKSCOPE001; don't bother looking at them. I've bought a bunch of teflon shims from KVRC; and his stuff is *RIGHT*. Go ahead and try them; you won't be disappointed. Thanks; Ernie P.
thanks for the love guys....darkscope i make what i feel are the best teflon washers that you will be able to find for rc car use. on top of that they are at least half the cost of the hobby shop ones and i offer three different thicknesses.
they are also great to use in your suspension joints to take up slop and reduce friction. even if your cars use a pin that is slightly smaller than .125 they still work fine.
JDish 06-16-2006, 09:16 PM Yeah, I have the same name on a few forums, including Platinum's. You are welcome to examine them if you want, but I'm not willing to part with any, LOL, well maybe a few if you really want. They're cheap enough, just get some, if you don't like them, I'll buy them from you.

DARKSCOPE001 06-16-2006, 09:16 PM I know I will probably be buying some off you in the near future buf for right now im gona smoke up the ones I have on hand (I actualy just bought a new pacage) so once I go thrugh those I will buy probably buy ever size from you in the 25 packs. Also I like how I can buy each size in diferent pacages so that I dont have to buy misc sizes and have like a billion of the size you never use. also the reason I am goingto buy ever size is because I like to use the thickest teflon washer I can get away with.
THANKS

SG1 has my favorite shims,
.010, .015, .025
There's a thread on here for them in the Oval products, I believe.
