Just tuned up a mower 2 yrs old B&S, new gas, plug, air filter and oil, blade sharpened. This thinkg takes 3-5 or more pulls to start it hot or cold, does anyone one know why this is? This machine looks virtually new yet I can not get it to start with one pull. This one has got me .....any one have any ideas ??? Once it starts the engine purrs.

Does it have a primer? Models without a primer tend to start harder.

Yes, it had a primer bulb, I was told a hotter plug might help but have not triedit yet any ideas? And are there charts to see what plug would be the correct next hotter plug.

What size engine? quantum with its side mounted air filter or what?

...just bought a brand new Bolens weed eater, damn thing thakes 10 + pulls to start, but it runs....

Bsman.... did you buy the bolens with the so called easy start v2? RETURN IT!! I bought the same thing, after I ripped the pull cord out, I returned it and payed a little more for the troybilt brushcutter, same engine.... but without the easy start v2 deal.... (at the spark plug, the troybilt one didn't have what the bolens had... what I beleive to be a crude compression release maybe) troybilt starts the 2nd or 3rd pull. The bolens took 10-15 pulls.

check out the gasket on the back of the air filter housing if its torn or smashed flat it wont seal and the primer will not work verry good

Hey thanks for all the help guys! Just had me scratching my head !! I have seen this on 6hp Tecumsh and 6.0 Briggs Quantum . You just have to pull the damn things 4-5 -6 times before they start. The primer bulbs are like new so perhaps scrench might have a point about the gasket being flattened. I am referring to machines that are 1-2 yrs old and abused by any imagination, virtually new mowers.
