Yes, It sure would be nice to know if Sandhills will continue with the family or be sold or closed outright. I will surely miss not seeing Fabio back behind the counter. I hope he is looking down on us and helps us keep a couple Tracks going to race on. The fate of that Track will decide if I remain in R/C or not as I now have to travel either to Seaford Delaware or down to the other Tracks in the Carolinas. If I have to Travel that far it will be summer only racing for me and be Gas. Virginia is down to basically 1 Indoor track in Gordonsville, Va at Thunder Road and Now the Paved Outdoor Track at Coopers in Callands, Va. is done for this year. If I don't hear something soon I will start to make some phone calls. Just Pray Sandhills Remains Open either Banked or Flat. AL

I'm supposed to meet with the owner sometime in the next week or so. I hope to get this done before I go to Florida on vacation. I'll let you know as soon as I know something.

I know this is an old thread...but I am curious - what ACTUALLY happened with Sandhills.... Ive heard so many different tales..I just want fact...can someone share?

With the demand for flat tracks..... its turning impossible for banked tracks to make it. I know Sandhills explored going flat...(and I was wondering what the expenses would be like) as well as the general feeling from the banked oval croud...

Before anyone JUMPS...Im not saying K&N is going flat...Im just looking to explore options, info & feedback...

Danielle,
I think the track is history. After the passing of Fabio Columbo the owner has decided to close up and pursue other options with the building. I have heard that the carpet has gone to another track already(flat).

Thats what I had heard... but I was also curious about the options they explored prior to closing...such as the cost of going flat. From what i hear, to take down - and set up a flat track..(with something like what we have at K&N) it would be in the 6-8K range....I admit I dont know much in this hobby..but that just seems high to me.....

I also would like to know how the banked racers in that area reacted to the plans or possibility of Sandhills going flat.... I get such mixed feelings from our regulars. I personally believe many visit K&N ...soley because its different & a challenge (being banked) but in the same breath...I believe if we went flat...our track would end up being bigger (size wise) than snowbirds...which might also attract people. Many people know I have not been on board for going flat...but if thats a wise choice to consider... for K&N...it may be something I have to just accept (lol)...and Im not implying I have the final say......Im just trying to feel out the subject, learn more and help figure out what is best for K&N.....

Flat track gives the drivers in most cases more then one groove to race in.
Flat also will allow a new driver a better chance at getting a hand on the track.
Some say that there is more speed on a banked track, but from what I've seen in the last few years the speed on a flat track is just as fast. I've raced on some of the fastest carpet banked tracks around. The speeds are fun and the traction is awsome.
Going from banked to flat also gives the track owner many options. They can run on-road, carpet off-road, and also change the size of the oval track to mix things up from time to time.
Take a look at what Josh's is doing at the CEFX track. Many tracks close because they can't get enough drivers to support the single track. Having the option to run many tracks on to different days help keep it open.
The cost is relative. If you have a flat floor. Carpet, outside walls, and inside barriers for both oval and on-road and your there.
Just remember there are Pro's and Con's to gluing down the carpet. We don't glue the carpet down. Yes the carpet does have some give, but it doesn't roll and ripple with the horsepower of the Mod cars coming out of the corners.

Last I heard, they sold out and it's now a flea market.

Bummer, that was one awesome track. Always worth the 9 hour drive at least 3 times a year.

Erock.......Add an hour.....come to K&N (lol).....

JoJo...get your lid right (LOL)....Mr.K&N makes ALL of the decisions for the track...(unless its a good one ...then I made that...LOL)...typical woman willing to take only the GOOD credit! (LOL)

Thank you for taking the time to answer me...it is very much appreciated...and food for thought!
