View Full Version : Rick, Think I can fix this? (paint on hood)
micyou03 05-23-2006, 01:30 PM Rick, Think I can fix this? Think I can remove the paint on the hood and keep the stripes?

ParkRNDL 05-23-2006, 05:09 PM Dang, you got that for 10 bucks?!? Wish I found auctions like that...
Absolutely, for that price I'd drop it in S'n'S and see what happens, and I bet it works...

check this thread out and look at the results Boss9 had with cleaning up the blue hot rod pictured there.
With the hood on the 'stang you will probably be able to get by with testor's airbrush thinner and rubbing it with a q-tip until the black paint is gone but before you remove any of the factory colors.
micyou03 05-24-2006, 09:47 AM I remember seeing that, but I would be worried about the stripes using thinner.
Did you see the results ParkRNDL got with Spic n Span?

Scroll down a bit.
ParkRNDL 05-24-2006, 01:42 PM Again, I think I learned with the S'n'S that it's better to let it soak longer and scrub less. the SnS won't hurt the stripes, but the bristles of whatever brush you're using eventually will...

micyou03 05-24-2006, 04:18 PM Thanks for that info rick. How long should I let it sit to start with, how long can I let it sit?
micyou03 05-24-2006, 04:19 PM I got the white/red Tyco Trans AM on ebay in the plastic diecast section for $.99 plus $4 shipping a few months ago too. The seller didn't even say it was a slot car.
ParkRNDL 05-24-2006, 04:49 PM I've started scrubbing after just a few hours of soaking, but then I ended up scrubbing too hard. I've also thrown them in and literally forgotten about them for 3-4 days, and the paint practically just rubbed off when I started scrubbing. The RRR site where I got the info says that they can stay pretty much indefinitely... I'd start with 24 hours and see what happens.
I'd also think about taking the bumpers off, or at least try to keep them out of the soup... I don't think they'll necessarily be damaged, but original chrome plating is pretty fragile, so I wouldn't take chances. On the other hand, I think the glass is fine in SnS. I actually removed paint from the glass on a couple of cars.

ParkRNDL 05-24-2006, 04:54 PM Here's two that came out pretty nice... you can see that the original paint is somewhat worn, but still very much there. Sorry, I didn't think to take Before pix, and I don't even rememebr what was on them, but they were both pretty gunked up.

boss9 05-24-2006, 10:24 PM Hello Gents—
Here are a couple more that “came back” with my methods-
These were both laying in a can of what looked like house paint, where the oil had separated from the base colour. They were pretty much covered in it.

Once soaked and cleaned, they only needed touch up some of the silver bits.
I’ve also read where brake fluid and “409” will remove paint, and the spray cleaner will also remove just the tint on a Chrome-coloured car leaving the original chrome base (Good to do that Chromey Lambo’ with, Joe).
Cheers..
