hi all,i have a problem, some programs when i try to start the setup file to install it, i need to close svchost.exe (netwroking services) for it to run, and when i do it a 1 minute restart dialog appears.
one of the programs is mysecretfolder.
in the task manager, the setup appears to be running, but no dialog appears until i end that specific svchost.exe

windows xp pro sp2
intel 915pbl motherboard
p4 3.6ghz 2mb cache
evga 7800gt 256mb ddr3 ram pci-express
creative sounblaster audigy platinum
4gb of 533mhz ddr2ram
maxtor 160gb hdd

Hi mate,

Firstly, your going to need to make sure all your anti virus software is upto date run a scan.

Its very important that you have all the updates from windows too. if you dont get them. make sure you prioritise the security updates.

Theres just a huge number of back door worm / viruses that go under the name of svchost.exe

Dont be super worried though, it is a genuine process. And it can often be found running in multiple instances. It should be located under your %systemroot%\System32 and if its somewhere else then its bad.

If your trying to install patches or updates and then your PC is rebooting go to Start > Run type 'cmd' and now type 'shutdown -a' (without the ' ')

So get your windows updates and get virus checking.

thanks for the reply
my windows and spyware and antivirus scanners are always up to date, with a scheduled scan for both every week.
did a windows search for svchost.exe, found 2 files: svchost in system32 folder, and the other one in c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$ which i believe is the folder the SP2 patch created.

when i put the shutdown -a command, the installer works, and completes successfully, but all other programs go crazy; internet explorer doesn't respond to any right click command, msn msngr and outlook need to shutdown, and that happened in 5 minutes only. when i saw all that i restarted immediatly.
now the program doesnt start until i end that same process!
i tried the program on another pc and it worked perfectly, its just this pc thats having this problem.
i had this problem with another program that i cant recall before, but at that time i thought its the program itself that has a problem. but now when it happened again i thought of conflicts.

so the problem is still there.

The error for your initial problem, the svchost issue. You can click details on the error report to give you more specific information on the error that occured, ya know the screen that comes up saying send or dont send the error report.


You might be able to locate it withn Control pannel > Adiminstrive tools > even viewer you'll probably have a few errors with the system / application errors, it might be tricky for you to narrow it down to the svchost.exe problem.

If you cant find it, not to worry just do as i first said, the next time you get the error view more details
