My knowledge of html is limited, but I can usually view the source code of a page and find the true location of a movie file so I can download it and keep it. However, I simply can't figure out how to download trailers from apple.com. They exclusively host many of the best trailers because they are Quicktime format. Yes, you can view them whenever you want at the site, but they don't stay there forever. Anyone know a way to actually download them?

After you've viewed the whole thing, try searching your HD for *.mov files. See what shows up in the browser cache directories. Sometimes they're in there. If you find what you want, just copy it out of the cache directory to somewhere else on the HD and you've got it.

Tried that with no luck. Looked through the cache files immediately after viewing a trailer but they were all 4-8K. They must have a way of clearing from the cache after (or during) viewing? Or they never create a cache file.

Now if I upgrade to Quicktime Pro, there is a little option to save as Quicktime file in each viewing window. But it's $30 to upgrade and an additional $30 each and every time they bring out a new version of Quicktime. Just to save trailers...nah. Yes, I know it unlocks additional functionality in Quicktime, but I wouldn't really use those features. Interestingly, back about 10 years ago many of the features that are now in the pay-only pro version were included in the free Quicktime download.

By viewing the source code, I was able to extract the (apparent) location of the mov file. I place that in the browser and the file opens and plays just fine. But if I save that file, I get nothing. I created a link on a webpage for the file and attempted to "download linked file." Still nothing. They are using scripting to retarget the source file or something. It's not really where I think it is. Bummer.

Quite often you can find the same trailers as downloads on other sites. Take for instance, the new Superman Returns trailers and TV spots, which can be downloaded in their entirety at www.kal-el.org in both .mov or .wmv formats.

Yes, that is true for some trailers, but many (more and more each month) are becoming Apple exclusives. I really don't mind having to go to Aple's site to view them while they are hot. But, once the newness has worn off, I wish they would remove the download restriction for those of us who want to keep them.

Thanx for the link for the Superman trailers. Added to the collection. :)
