I have a 14.5 hp B&S MDL#287707 Type 0225-01 Code 961125ZE (steel ring gear). To date I haven't found anyone who can tell me if it takes starter #693551 or #693552. The difference is the length 3 5/8 vs 4 3/8. Does anyone know? I don't have the old starter. Thanks.

my parts lists says either numbers for the steel ring gear, the difference being in what you stated, the size. So I don't know, sometimes in different setups where there isn't room for a longer one, you use the shorter one maybe?

shouldnt make any difference, both mount the same as long as you use a steel gear on starter to match steel flywheel, plastic gear is for aluminum or plastic flywheels only.
