This is from Sci-Fi wire:

"Rick McCallum, George Lucas' longtime Star Wars producing partner, told SCI FI Wire that future projects are a ways off, including a live-action TV show that is at least a year and a half away. "Star Wars TV series, probably not for a couple of years," McCallum said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, Calif., on May 2. "George is starting to start the basic concept of it. ... We're interviewing writers. We're seeing a lot of people. But I'd say it's not going to be happening for another at least 18 months."

McCallum also denied rumors that the new series would focus on members of the Skywalker family, but repeated that the show will take place in the timeframe between Episode III and IV. "All-new characters," he added. "That missing 20-year period when Luke is growing up. ... Think bounty hunter. That's all I can tell you. There's nobody else that you'll know [in it]. At the moment. You know, it's still [in] really, really early stages. He hasn't really sat down to think about which direction [he's going]."

McCallum added that 3-D theatrical versions of the Star Wars movies are still planned. "We're working on that," he said. "It's just a question of how many theaters will be out there. Hopefully, by the end of this year there will be about 1,500 [3-D] theaters. We need about two or three thousand before it makes it, you know, viable for any of us to go out in 3-D. But that looks like it will happen sometime in the year 2007, so hopefully we'll be happy about that."

Lucas is also planning a new run of Clone Wars-themed animated shorts. "There's an animated series being done right now, so that probably also won't be ready for another year," McCallum said. "But, yeah, that's looking really good."

What do you think the series will be like production wise? I imagine he'll probably push for hi-def digitial with 90% CG sets/environments. If there's like a main ship, that'll get a real set. Certain other things will occasionally be built, or just in fragments. I hope that it will go on location a lot. Maybe it'll be filmed in AU or NZ or something. I really expect him to push the virtual filmmaking aspect, a heck of a lot more than anyone else is doing (with live action integration). BSG does a little, but not like I'm thinking.

Oh I'm sure he's got lots of suprises in mind. He's the one that kick Hollywood in the butt in many aspect (filming technics, new improved hardware, special effects, economics). And if he thinks that this new challenge is good financially (for him as always!!!) well expect him to be there. So I can't wait to see where this thing will go.

Maybe some of you have already seen this; I'd seen some of it but never the whole thing.

This morning I stumbled upon a link comtaining all of the footage Lucas trimmed from act one of Ep. IV.

This was in the book and original screenplay but I always thought that Lucas claimed he never shot this footage.

Assuming this is for real.

Oh, it's for real. Lucas even allowed a small bit of the Biggs/ Luke reunion to be broadcast in a "making of" special some years ago.

I think we can all agree Lucas made the right decision in making the cuts...

I'll back up Carson by also saying the footage is real. Short segments of that footage are included in the documentary on the Bonus Material DVD in the Trilogy box set.

Recently I purchased an interesting bootleg DVD called Star Wars Deleted Magic. What I thought was going to be nothing more than a collection of deleted scenes turned out to be a near-complete version of Episode IV with all of the deleted scenes put back into the film. Also, some scenes were in different places in this version than in the theatrical release, and the final "attack on the Death Star" sequence is allegedly the first cut of that scene. In some cases, they used split-screen to show the comparison between the two scenes. Almost every edit is accompanied by text (at the bottom of the screen, like subtitles) explaining why that particular edit was made--better continuity, more impact, improved pacing, etc.. Now, for someone who enjoys movies but doesn't particularly care about the movie-making process, this DVD would probably be quite boring. But for someone like me who is interested in how movies are made, and specifically why certain editing decisions are made, this was rather interesting. There were also trailers for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi versions of this Deleted Magic DVD, but when I inquired about them the vendor told me he hadn't seen or heard of them. :(

It wasn't too bad. Plus, it would have linked in with ep 1,2,3 better regarding what the empire was doing with trade routes etc. But, one thing I didn't realise was there is some sort of academy that wasn't the rebellion. The way Luke talked about it, I thought they were heading directly off to the rebellion.

It sounded like some sort of merchant marine academy, at least to me.

I always assumed Luke meant the official Naval Academy for the Empire.

Biggs was in it, and jumped ship to join the Rebellion.

The deleted footage seen there, along with a whole bunch more can be found on an old CD-ROM from Lucasfilm called "Star Wars: Behind the Magic". The CDs were released in '97 around the time of the Special Editions being in theaters. There is a lot of footage (most of it silent) that was never seen anywhere else.

Did you guys know that Han had a girl in the cantina? There was some reaction footage shot of Han with a girl sitting in his lap when Ben uses his lighsaber. After Ben shuts down his lightsaber, Han motions for the girl to scram as Ben, Luke and Chewie head around the bar to where Han is sitting.

I recall this from the novel (or script maybe?), but I didn't know Lucas actually shot it. I've gotta try to find one of those "Magic" dvds...

I think the academy he was referring to was the Imperial Academy.

I don't know nuthin' 'bout no DVDs, but the CD-ROMs can still be found on the e-place.

The CDs were the only licensed release of this material by Lucasfilm.

I think the academy he was referring to was the Imperial Academy.By "Imperial" is the same as the "Empire" ("Why would Imperial Troops want to slaughter Jawas?"). I never thought he wanted to join them. When Owen says "you can join the academy next year...", I assumed it was directly into the Rebellion. Any who, I thougth it was neat the way they described them stealing a ship to join the Rebellion.

CaptFrank

Why would Luke have to transmit an application to join the Rebellion?

Wouldn't that be a bad idea?

Actual evidence for the Empire to arrest you!

The Academy is the Empire's.

Luke was apathetic about the abuses of power until it directly
affected him. Only then did he want to do anything about it.

He was so looking forward to joining so he could fly a TIE!

Yes, good points. He also says later to OB1 that he "hates" the empire, but there's nothing he can do about it right now, or something like that. You could be right that he is willing to join something he hates just so he can fly something more than his hover craft thing. Then in the clip that was removed, he says something about wanting to join before he gets drafted??

The Academy is the Empire's.

I think The Academy was intended as a vestigial remnant of the Old Republic... a former Merchant Marines-esque training school that had become, at the hand of the Emperor's regime, a seemingly benign trap in which to snare innocent young inductees and "compell" them into imperial service.

Hey, it worked for Caesar, Napolean and Hitler... why not Palpatine?

Alas, even back-world hicks like Biggs and Luke recognized The Academy for what it was, and were able to exploit the system in order to gain otherwise cost-prohibitive training (establishing in the process the critical contacts they'd need within the early Rebel Underground).

Anyway, that's my theory.
