Went to the Friday night auction at the local auction house. Over the past year or two, I've gone to check things out there pretty often Friday evenings while my daughter is at gymnastics, and I generally find exactly zero slot cars. I haven't been there for several weeks due to family trips, my daughter's knee injury, other unrelated crap. So last night there's FOUR LOTS of slot car stuff, all spread out over the outside auction line. One lot is a fairly small early AFX set in original box (Sebring, maybe?). The cover shows a Petty-type Roadrunner and a Superbird (edit: or a Charger Daytona, smart guy... you know the car I mean... I forget if it ain't sitting in front of me to look at...), but the only car in the box is a white/red flames Vega wagon funny car. Don't need to start a box of ANOTHER track type. Pass.

Another lot is actually 3 slot car sets... a Sand Van set, original box, no cars, beat-up orange track... a goofy old Artin-type set with a white Trans Am and a semi, original box... and a Matchbox Speedtrack set, original box, with a cool-looking Jaguar, a VW Scirocco, and a Gremlin sprint car. I would have given maybe 5 bucks for the Matchbox set at a yard sale for the novelty of the cars, but the lot goes around 20 bucks. Pass.

Then there's a box of old camera film and stuff with a black Tjet era Pit Kit in it. In the pit kit is a Petty Roadrunner body that's pretty badly hacked, a Tyco '40 Ford body, and a baggie of random pancake and Tycopro parts. Some guy snagged this for 5 bucks for the film. Dangit, I shoulda bid.

But now...

In a section that's usually boxes of junk off the garage shelves, hidden in a Seagram's VO box under a package of vacuum cleaner bags and a little shovel from a fireplace, is what appears to be most of a Vibe set. Nobody seems to have noticed it, and I'm hoping to get away with it... yeah, fat chance. Two minutes before they get to that lot, another guy pokes through the box. The bidding starts at a dollar or two, and me and this guy get to like 35 bucks before I quit... I only have a little over 40 on me and I can tell he saw the slot stuff and wants it. Craaaaaaaap. Read it and weep:

In addition to a bunch of old Vibe track, two green Vibe controllers, and a Vibe AC power pack, in this box there are the following Vibrator cars: a yellow Thunderbird, a Mercedes in blue, a Jag in red, and two white Vette convertibles, one missing a windshield. Other than the missing wihdshield, all cars appear to be complete and uncut and in nice shape. All have chassis under them but the Vettes, and there are enough chassis and parts in the box to make up maybe 3 or 4 more chassis. I got to talking to the guy afterwards, and he didn't really realize what he had gotten... he wanted old slot cars, but he grew up with Tjets and AFX and didn't know what Vibes were. So I gave him a brief rundown and warned him not to use that AC pack with his pancake cars, and I told him to cruise Fleabay to check out the value of what he just picked up...

Man, maybe if I had gone to 40 bucks...

5 vibes for 40 bucks would have been a great find. Maybe next go around.
