Bugman, i've already written to you about this but wanted to post a couple of pics. After the rebuild, I bench ran it with no problems, and even used the tiller some. But yesterday, it started smoking (white/blue). I drained the oil (see pic). I also removed the head (see pic). It is obvious that oil is getting into the combustion chamber. I was really careful when replacing the rings. One thing that I did not do is rough up or hone the cylinder wall. Can you folks give me some ideas. The rebuild job consisted of new rings, new gaskets everywhere, new valves, and new carb. The basic question is, how is oil getting into the combustion chamber (rings or breather my guesses).

Thanks in advance.

I don't think the ring's will seat right ( Break-In ) with out honing the cylinder wall's some, this could be the problem.

You can get a honing tool at Sears for low cost.

I just finished taking her apart and took some pics. Everything looks alright except for lots of cylinder scoring and heavy scoring on the piston&rings. Me thinks I must have got something in the engine and it ate on the cylinder/piston/rings until the oil seal failed. What do you guys think? Take a look at the pics.

Thanks.
Charlie

Yeah.... a good hone job might do it... how bad do the scratches feel? Was the piston the original?

yes. the piston is the original. The scratches feel pretty bad. Dragging my fingernail across them feels like speed bumps. Should I go ahead and get oversized rings and piston?
