View Full Version : "INSANE SPEED RUN" Give it a try?
swtour 04-20-2006, 12:57 AM This July at the ENCINO VELODROME in Sunny Southern California, during the California Velodrome Championships we'll be holding a INSANE SPEED RUN.
This will be open to 1/10th scale ELECTRIC R/C Cars. Not much else for rules from there...but KEEP THEM Safe. ie: no objects sticking out of the body, no metal bumpers, use common sense.
MORE info will follow, or keep an eye on www.southwesttour.com (http://www.southwesttour.com)
WHO will run over 100 mph?
A little track info. HIGH BANKED CONCRETE VELODROME. The short way(at the bottom) is over 900 ft. long. The insane run will probably run closer to 1050 ft. running the center line of the track.
www.encinovelodrome.org (http://www.encinovelodrome.org) for some track info.

I am building an insane car. It should be fast.

rockin_bob13 04-20-2006, 09:51 AM I built one and ran it last year at the Indy Velo. 10 cells, 9 turn. One lap to get up to speed, one hot lap, one to cool down,( it wouldn't go anymore, melted the brushes), got 85 mph. Scared the heck out of me. $1000 headed toward the wall. I know it's no record. Sure was fun tryin'. Best was we brought it back intact. BC
Echeconnee 04-20-2006, 02:27 PM Sounds like a great place for a brushless set up!!

i rember watching kent clausen hit the wall at dominquez so hard he could not get the car out of the wall he just snaped it off and took what was left to the pits! also rember watching brian langraff s dominator speedo blow at 80 + it was locked and loaded could not shut it off had to waite untill the cells dumped! we ran the old 900 scrs cells then!
tw78911sc 04-20-2006, 03:49 PM The one year I went I remember the cars melting down the ESC's, blue flames coming out the back and people chasing them with fire extinguishers in the infield after they finally crashed upside down. One of the event's biggest hilite!!

Gary McAllister 04-20-2006, 11:23 PM Echeconnee-
Brushless seems like a relatively new thing for RC cars, but they were used in the "Insane Speed Run" the last three years of the Thunderdrome in 91, 92 & 93. Could have been the first usage of brushless in RC car competition. You guys are sure bringing back some vivid memories.

4.5 Novak , Lipos and a big wing!!!
rockin_bob13 04-24-2006, 09:33 PM RPM, sounds good, you gonna build it and drive it?Takes big brass shiny ones to do it. Brushless would have sure helped mine. BC

GTP body and wing with the UPS logo painted on it!!LOL
mark74 04-26-2006, 03:37 AM RPM or anyone else,
I'm building an 1/8 scale velodrome car out of a PRP XR/8 onroad, done a heap of things to the car including a new body styled like an open class slot car that I had to make myself because of the longer wheelbase (I extended it from 300mm to 324mm). Do you guys keep the things stuck in the turns with a GTP body and wing and nothing else? I've also replaced the .21 with a marine .45 hydro race engine. I've half built the mold for a carbon undertray with a giant diffuser hangin' out the back with slightly more front over hang than is normal at the front of the body work with a small front diffuser there too. Do you guys think I'm wasting my time or will the undertray help. I've designed it from pics of 80's and 90's group C cars. I really want this thing to go ballistic but not be out of control. Also do any of you guys run telemetry systems in your cars?
rockin_bob13 04-26-2006, 11:43 AM I found that the main handling aspect of the car to keep it from blowing over on the minor bumps, (no bumps at 80mph are minor) is to have a balanced, well damped suspension so if the car does leave the ground, it leaves level and lands level. Downforce will only slow the car down. Don't rely on downforce to hold the car. Make the suspension do it for you. BC
huffrcman 04-26-2006, 08:05 PM DNA front end all the way!!!

Hi Bob,
The .45 engine makes between 4.0-5.0Hp. Do you think the downforce will still slow me down with that sort of power? The bigger engine and pipe however weigh a fair bit more than the .21 engines.
rockin_bob13 04-26-2006, 08:55 PM Think about a Streamliner at the Salt Flats, but of course with the chassis you have in mind. Smooth and sleek, no extra holes in the body, rear wing, as low and as far back as you can get it. The slicker you can make it eqauls free h.p.(must go faster, must go faster) BC
k7king 04-27-2006, 07:39 AM We will be testing the new front end called The Shocker at the veledrome .
MIKE VALENTINE 04-27-2006, 08:27 AM K7king I'm glad to see that front end making it off the drawing board. I saw the cad drawing awhile back and it looks like it should work. Where you the one who designed it? I can't even remember what board I saw in on.
k7king 04-27-2006, 11:32 AM Mach 10 and I came up with it.......he did all the cad. I machined all the aluminum and he cut the carbon fiber. I have raced it 3 times on carpet and I am very pleased with it. We should have several cars of ours and friends at the veledrome testing it out. We've yet to decide on selling it because of low volume and all the machine time involved. thanks

Aero will be the key in getting these cars to fast. Remember, doubling your speed requires 4x the power to overcome aerodynamic drag.
huffrcman
The DNA front ends really settles down the car. It makes the car so much easier to drive. I hope to have my friends frontend on my speed run car.
Here is a picture of the frontend. I should have the next version when it is done.
mark74 05-01-2006, 06:30 AM Rockin_bob13,
I've just decided not to run the .45 as yet. I was tossing up between the HP and $$$ I have to spend to convert the .45 to a car engine, after I get the pipe and head sorted out and my undertray (which will be like a kite if it doesn't work) seems like I'm trying to go too fast too soon and I can't justify the AUS$1000 just for the engine change. I already have everything for .21 size engines, the car came with a "putt putt" engine which I'll use for the first hr then I'm moving on to a supposedly strong Novarossi called a NR528XR which is a .28ci capacity at about half the price of the .45 and much the same weight as a .21. So I'll be taking your advice and using a low drag body and adjustable wing setup with the undertray.
Does anyone find that if you move the wing to far back it makes the front light or at least induce a push?
huffrcman 05-01-2006, 05:16 PM SJacquez,
I like the way that front end looks.Looks like something Chad Smith made for the Custom Works dirt oval cars. There is also a Custom Works front end kit for pancars, but they are hard to find.
thirdplace 05-01-2006, 08:11 PM Joe,
Will the Insane Speed runs be both Saturday and Sunday? or just Saturday?
swtour 05-01-2006, 11:07 PM Richard,
It depends I guess on how many "INSANE" drivers we have. If there is enough interest, I'd like to have runs on both days.
SJacquez 05-02-2006, 12:34 AM huffrcman
My friends' front end is extremely smooth and adjustable. I hope to have one before the July Encino Velodrome race. I have two of the Custom Works front ends.
I will be running my Indy car with brushless and Li-poly batteries, just to see if I can get it into a higher atmosphere. See you all there on July 22!
swtour 05-04-2006, 01:40 AM This MESSAGE has had a LOT of Viewers...
As the promoter/director of this event, I would like to see some INSANE Sponsorship...to help set the bar.
Do we have anyone that would put up a CASH award to the FASTEST single lap or multi lap combo? How about a BOUNTY if a certain time/speed is achieved?
How about the BANZAI Speed Run, or something like the "MuchMore than INSANE" Speed run... or try YOUR COMPANY Name along with something Crazy Fast sounding~
Currently at the 'drome, 4 cell MODIFIED can run in the LOW 9's, HOW Fast can a LiPo/Brushless INDY Car run? How about an 8 cell/ 7 Turn GTP car?
firechicken 05-04-2006, 02:46 AM Huff,
It's my own design. I have had it for about 2+ years now. That picture was the #2 version. I have the #3 version on my car now, it's alot cleaner and more compact, and I hopefully will have version #4 on my car and Sjacquez's (NOT ON YOUR INSANE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) car for that July race.
Joe,
I have been tempted to do a 6-cell stock insane car cuz I'm a stock freak. I averaged 57mph at domiquez at the last 6-cell race. W/ the bumps and shorter track I would be happy to break the 60+ mark. I don't know! I need to build and test the new front ends first.
thirdplace 05-04-2006, 09:11 PM I'm in. I putting a little somethin somethin together.

Two years ago I ran 9.8 sec with a six cell mod car at the Indy Velo drome. With the newer batterys and motor we have now I am sure I could get into the 8 sec range. That would be some where around 90mph.

Is the velodrome you guys run on a standard olympic spec velodrome? That's 250 metres in the metric system for one lap on the very bottom painted line.
huffrcman 05-06-2006, 09:36 AM The Indy velodrome is bigger. It is 1080' along the bottom line.
rockin_bob13 05-06-2006, 09:56 AM 333 meters
mark74 05-06-2006, 10:23 AM Wow, that's a lot bigger than ours, maybe that's why I have a little trouble trying to get the car to hang on in the turns. You guys must be running some serious actual car speed. I can't believe an electric car can run that fast. Unbelieveable!
