Basically, I'm sponsoring a 4 race points series for the Indycar class during this year's Indianapolis Velodrome season. Basic class rules are a purpose built F1/Indy/Irl direct drive chassis & body, 6-cell up to 3800mah batteries, capped tires, and ROAR legal stock motor. You will be allowed to throw out your worst finish, so best 3 out of 4 races. Points will be distributed as follows:

1st - 100
2nd - 98
3rd - 96
4th - 94
etc... with a bonus point for TQ.

Dates of the races are as follows:
Sat., May 13th.
Sun., June 4th.
Sat., July 15th.
Aug. 19th & 20th. the 2006 Velo Nats

I'm going to pay out the top 6 positions as follows:
1 - $160
2 - $120
3 - $100
4 - $60
5 - $40
6 - $20

If anyone is interested and has questions, check out the forums on www.pdxracing.net (http://www.pdxracing.net/).

As far as what type of car is legal for the series, examples would include by not be limited to the following:

F102, F103, Kyosho Indy/F1, Corally F1, HPI F1, Cross F1, Duratrax F1, All cars made by http://www.rcindycars.com (http://www.rcindycars.com/), etc...

Basically any direct drive (rear straight axle) purpose built F1/Indy/Irl style car. Also, you may not run all 6 batteries left of center - this is to keep it fair for the F102/F103 or HPI F1 style cars that were designed to run stick packs. You may run saddle packs in 3x3 or 4x2 configuration. You must also run a nylon or ABS plastic front wing for safety. Complete class rules can be found on http:\\www.pdxracing.net (http://www.pdxracing.net/)

I hope some of you can make it to Indianapolis this season.

Thanks, Brian Smith

oh yeah!!!!!! the good ole days!!!!!!! sure miss those days running for Sam but hey life goes on!!!!! Yep plan on running some 19T and Indycar.. but this ordeal with the rules on what you can run of what equipment has got me bothered some so we'll get the Maverick 05 done for 19T and get my Cosworth ready to go for Indy.. since they're trying to tell me my ADX II and Woods Indycar may not be legal to run there.. what a bunch of kah kah!!! hmmm sounds like a 06-07 retirement season tour maybe in the works for me if this crap doesn't get under control... Taking my Mustang Mach 1 to car shows has been alot more fun than going thru this ordeal.. so we'll see what happens this summer so we'll c ya there and I'll tell Cyndi to get the movies ready!!!! Peace out!!!! The Dr.!!!

Moss, I don't have a problem with the Woods Indycar. I think that design should be grandfathered into the rules since it was a purpose built open wheel car. By all means if you want to run a Woods Indycar, bring it out. I'm not sure who said you couldn't run that car, but let me know. In reality the front end on the Woods car isn't too much different than some of the cars that http://www.rcindycars.com makes.

The only thing I didn't want to see is someone slapping an F1/Indy body on an 10L3 (or similar) car mainly for safety. Doing that would leave a lot of chassis exposed in front of the wheels that could potentially hurt someone if it hit them. I realize that being hit by anything going 50+ mph is going hurt. At least having a plastic/nylon wing in front instead of graphite/fiberglass may help eliminate some injury.

Also, since I'm putting up the cash for the Indy class points series I'm eager to hear any arguments why any car should be legal in that class. I want to keep this class fun, which I think it has been for the past few years. I also want to see old and new faces at the track.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me at smith_brian_g(at)yahoo.com. Remember to replace the (at) with @.

Just wanted to add that I'm going to be giving a $25 Wal-Mart gift cert for TQ at each of the 4 races this season in the Indycar class. Each racer will only be eligible for the TQ award once this season. If the same racer sets TQ in more than one event, the award will go to the next highest eligible qualifier. I hope that this will help offset the cost of gas for the racer who wins this award.

Also, I'm trying to figure a good way to reward podium at the races this season. I'll post if I come up with a solution.

Thanks, Brian G. Smith

Brian I think you are doing something great for the Indy car velo races. Your promotion should help bring out the racers. I agree with you, keep the rules simple. set some basic guidelines and go racing.

j21moss
04-26-2006, 07:31 PM
Brian... I agree with you 100 percent...I wouldn't want to change that in anyway... but I have been informed that if equipment is not available to the public to buy, then it was not allowed to race at the velodrome.. now hear me out... I was told if we ran stadium truck there, we would have to run current production trucks and accessories that was available to the public or they could not run.. example.. transmissions, chassis, wheels, tires.. had to be available to the public or was not allowed...well if the grandfather clause is there I'll say ok then and let's go racing and move on.... but if not... is it my fault that Losi or Assc discontinued the kit that I have.... NO... is it my fault that S/K is out of business for truck bodies.... NO... and is it my fault Assc. discontinued the 10T narrow rubber front tires and Proline discontinued the rear Narrow wheels and Twinn-K went out of business for their Black Dot foam tires.... NO....and is it my fault that Thorpe is no longer around that provided a upper shaft that converted the transmission to a 1:96 and let alone I was able to convert it to 64 pitch gears internally for better range of gearing... NO..... hmmmmmmmmm.....I guess then my Velodrome truck is illegal to run there because people like me hold on to stuff for a long time hoping maybe someday we can run them again.. we spend alot of money on these toys to go racing and then I get told is that the public can't buy it... it can't run....there's nothing custom made on this truck period... everybody could have bought these items once.. but is it my fault they didn't???? NOPE!!! so the way I look at it.. so if it can't run!!!!! then it will stay on the shelf longer where it has been next to the 2 trophies trophies I won with it at the Velodrome.. just stating facts!!!!!.. so there my secret is out on what my setup is in truck!!!!

anyway I like I said before if it is true then EVERYBODY better be running new cars or current production kits... so my 05 Maverick and my Cosworth indycar will be there.. I hope Cosworth is still in production.. don't wanta ruffle any feathers at the track  if not then I'm available for rent to drive a new Indycar..LMAO... until then... Peace out!!!!!!!!

A few people made it out today to practice. Here are a couple of pics. The all red is Bob Cordell's car and the blue & white is Greg Cordell's car. The rest are my cars.

As far as practice went, Greg's indycar and my Quaker State handled well. Bob and Ernie had some problems.

I still have a car that can be borrowed if anyone is interested. Currently it has a Futaba PCM receiver in it, but no speed control.

First race of the year is in 2 weekends on May 13, 2006 - Check here for the Indy velo schedule http://pdxracing.sytes.net/funflyer.html.

In case everyone didn't know, the Indianapolis Velodrome is usually open every day to the general public (Except for Dr. Moss  ). Practice fee is usually $4. It is always best to call Linda Fink at (317) 327-8356 a few days before you plan to be there in case there is a bicycle event going on. Here is a good link for information (phone/info/directions) for the Indy Velodrome - http://www.indygov.org/eGov/City/DPR/Parks/Major+Taylor+Velodrome.htm
Yesterday we had to share the track with a few bicycles.

Located next to the Velodrome there is also a BMX track and a skate board park. Just west and a few blocks south of the track is Marion College. A few blocks south off 30th street there is a Soap Box Derby track and 2 public golf courses - Riverside and Coffin. There is also the Riverside Golf Academy across the highway. About a mile east on 38th & Michigan is the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Also, a few miles west on 30th street is the north entrance to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - close enough to hear full sized Indycars qualifying on the 13th.

Any new people coming to the track on May 13th should bring extension cords and their own pits tables/chairs. Recently the Velo has been allowing us to use one of the offices to pit in, but space is limited. There is limited space in the infield to pit, but plenty of space on the outside back straight (bring long extension cables), outside of turn 1 & 2, and just inside the entry to the track. You can also bring your easy-up canopy if you pit outside.

Brian are they open for practice on weekends too?

IndyRC_Racer
05-04-2006, 11:27 AM
I've practiced on the weekends in the past. Since it is part of Indy Parks, it should be open. During the week, they normally don't open until late morning - 11:00am or later. They also usually close fairly early in the evening - 5:00 pm range. They do have bike events on various days, so it is a good idea to call to make sure. I know in the past Friday night is a bad day for R/C cars since they had that time blocked out for bikes.

Moss - The Woods car was a purpose built F1/Indycar, I have no problem with you running that car. I don't know about Stadium Truck guys and their dispute with you but I agree that the Woods car was available so therefore allowed to run if you have it.

Although you might want to run the Cosworth for the $100 extra bounty money...

2nd - $10
3rd - $5

I haven't purchased the Walmart TQ certificates yet, but Mark Borem gave me a good suggestion. Award $20 for TQ at each event and an additional $20 for the person who qualifies the best for the whole season. Let me know what you think.

Cold + Rain = Cancelled FUN RUN

Guess what guys, it's May in Indiana and it has surely brought rain. Bummer, but with the low temperatures, the ground being wet once again tonight, the track would never dry by morning and I don't want to have to wait around all day just to get in one heat race in 48 degree weather. Therefore, tomorrows "FUN RUN" is being cancelled. I will call the Track tomorrow and see if we can get next Saturday or Sunday as a make-up day. If I can not get next weekend we will have to wait till June 4th. Thanks for your understanding and we'll...

Weather looks good for this weekend and Sunday May 21st. There is a chance for overnight rain Saturday night/Sunday morning, but I think we won't have any problems at Velo since the high banking dries quickly.

For awards/prizes Sunday I have a $25 Walmart gift cert for TQ and Hobbytown gift certs for 1-3. $15 for 1st, $10 for 2nd, $5 for 3rd.

I'm currently thinking about raffling off a new 6-cell 3800 battery. I know alot of oval racers don't normally race 6-cells, so this might help one of the casual racers at the Velo. I'll update this post later today or Saturday to let you know if a raffle is a go.

Thanks, Brian Smith

Okay, picked up a 6-cell 3800 today at Hobbytown North in Indy. Numbers look decent - 422-423 secs of runtime at 1.9 IR.

This battery will be raffled on Sunday - 1 ticket for $1 or 6 tickets for $5.

Hey everyone, the Velo Nats are coming up in less than a month - August 19th & 20th. 1st Place in the 6-cell Stock Indycar has been locked up. Even though Bob Cordell has 3 races under his belt it is a best 3 of 4 races series. He will have to throw out his worst - which would give him 188 points right now or tied for 3rd. I would say if Greg Cordell has a solid Nats, he should lock up 2nd. However, 3rd-8th should be up for grabs.

If we get 10 entries in 6-cell Stock Indycar at the Nats, I'm going to put some additional money on the line for just that race. Here is what I'm planning on paying out for the 6-cell Stock Indycar class.
TQ - $50
Mains:
1st - $40
2nd - $30
3rd - $20
4th - $10

I figure the winner gets his entry fee back for the Nats.

Hope to have a good turn-out next month.

Going into the last race of the year, Bob Cordell had a good chance to come in 3rd or possibly 2nd. However, due to a mishap in the main, he dropped all the way down to 6th. Tim Toepp with a solid performance in the main jumped from 7th to tie for 3rd with Sam Randazzo & Matt Randazzo. The Randazzo's have been supporters of the Velo for many years, so it was good to see them finish in the top 3 in the points series.

I need to explain 1 item in the points series. You will see that I gave myself 101 for race #4. I actually didn't count my results, nor had I planned to. I mainly raced to try for a track record. Therefore, you will notice Bob Cordell with 93 points. He got the 1 bonus point for TQ since he was qualified 2nd while I actually qualified 1st/finish 1st. Therefore all the points transfered down. 2nd got 100, 3rd 98, etc... Hey, it was my money so I thought that since I had already wrapped up the series by race 3 that this was fair.

Here are the final results for the points series:
