View Full Version : What Ebay should do
noddaz 03-31-2006, 06:37 PM On another auction site...
(Stolen without permission...)
If there is bidding activity on the auction within fifteen (15) minutes of when the auction is scheduled to close, the auction automatically switches into a special mode analogous to the 'going, going, gone' period of a live auction. In this mode, the auction is automatically extended until there have been no bids placed within fifteen (15) minutes. When fifteen (15) minutes have passed with no bidding activity, the auction closes.
Of course this would put all the people with sniping software out of business...
Unless they rewrote it...

oldraceral 03-31-2006, 09:51 PM You could stay up all night bidding and the auction might still not end. :freak:

Right?!
I have never used one of those cheater programs. If I am going to snipe, I do it for the sport of it. It helps generate that hunters instinct in me. The minutes tick down to seconds......POUNCE! (enter) Then I get to sit back and enjoy the cool adrenalin rush!
That is what several industrial equipment or military auction sites do and it is the worst format I have ever seen. What a stupid format.
If you can't get there on time and bid the most realistic amount and stick with it then you have no business even trying.
In a real auction when the gavel drops the auction is over, they don't say going once, twice, three, four, five six .......on and on times. In an online auction the final minutes are your going going gone warnings, or should be.
Invent a better sniping format if you really want to make waves.

If they really wanted to reduce sniping, or make sniping harder, they would instill a 'lock out' period in which you should have to bid on the item at least once before the last hour of the auction to bid again within the last hour.
This would reduce snipers, or at least help out the seller by having more people bid on the auctions
My two cents...
Matt
micyou03 04-01-2006, 03:48 PM Its not to reduce sniping. Its to incease final sell price.

Well in real life they do extend it - IF you attend an auction and somebody throws in an extra bid then the price goes up and the auctioneer looks for the next best bid. Doesn't actually stop until there is nobody left willing to put in a higher bid. I think the 15 minutes is a bit long but if they dropped it back to 5 then it would be better.
.................
Wow for a 1st post it sounds fairly heavy. Not meant to be.
I enjoy coming here to read and find info on HO slots and welcome the opportunity to do so.
I am from Australia (Melbourne) and have a track set up at home. Currently have AFX set up, but also have Life Like, Tyco, Aurora & Artin HO tracks. Cars only number around 80 though find it difficult buying locally because the exchange rate causes problems.
2 boys (5 + 6) who play mayhem with the cars, but thats what they are for. Keep changing the track on me the little buggers ! I keep trying to keep the tight corners out of the track and they keep putting them back in - I like speed and keeping the cars on the tracks, they like corners and the crash's.
Thanks for the site and keep up the postings.

joez870 04-07-2006, 06:36 AM Welcome to HT Slinkzak! It is always* good to have another mate from Australia join us! As for your junior slotters, buy a box of screws and anchor your favorite layout down to your table, Give the ruggers their own cars and lock yours up! (or take them to work, :) )

Yes, in a real "live" auction they do not drop the gavel (except at Barrett/Jackson  ) but that is not the point.
In a "live" auction the bidding continues until no one is willing to bid higher.
Why should an on-line auction be different?
Scott
joez870 04-07-2006, 11:14 PM Why should an on-line auction be different?
Well, for starters, a "live" auction has a finite number of people in a room with an item. Within minutes, even seconds, it is easy to see if everyone is done bidding. That item is closed to bids at the discretion of the auctioneer.
The internet allows people to trapes in and out at will. Hundreds and thousands roam the on-line auction house.
Setting a time for an auction to end is really only taking the place of that fast-talking guy with a wooden T-jet smacker. The Auction does not last for just minutes as it would in a live auction. It lasts days. THAT is why it is different. :)
