I went to a toy show last Saturday. One of the vendors was complaining that this old slot car set hadn't sold yet and all he wanted for it was five bucks. It even came with lots of extra track still in original boxes. He got me hook, line, and sinker. :D If nothing else, it's a neat conversation piece... the manual and catalog sheet are in very good shape too...

The cars are ROUGH (as if you couldn't tell), but the motors all run. I rigged up a power pack and controllers from an Artin 1/43 set. Rube Goldberg would have been proud. The tires are all dried out so they mostly sit and spin, but I did manage to get the #75 car all the way around under its own power a few times. The newer 1/43 cars run great on this track, by the way. Now I also have a 1/32 Strombecker set coming my way from my uncle, who said he's cleaning out his basement and none of his sons are interested in it...

Rick, you should frame some of that paperwork and use it for decoration...
Old slotcar stuff is cool...

Rick,
Where are the banked curves? Great pickup for $5.00.

Heh heh. I thought that myself. "Banked" curves... they're not, really. They give you wedges to stick under the curves, so they're banked the same way that big curve at one end of an Aurora Tub Track is banked...

However, I've started cruising Fleabay's Vintage 1/32 category for old Eldon stuff. It seems they did make a banked curve, and most of this stuff can be had cheap compared to some of the other brands. Now, from what I understand, Eldon was cheap toy junk compared to the other stuff of its era, but looking at it next to Artin's 1/43 stuff that lots of guys have started fooling with, it doesn't seem any worse. Add to that the fact that it's got that cool old-school feel to it, and I just might try to start picking up some junk lots of this stuff...

I think for starters I gotta find a couple of decent Eldon cars. The ones I have here are just plastic shells with motors and axles snapped into them. From what I've seen on the Bay, their better cars had two screwposts like a Tjet and a plastic or aluminum chassis that you could tinker with a little. On the Old Weird Herald board, I've seen a few opinions to the effect that Eldon stuff is junk not worth playing with, but I was always one to learn the hard way...
