View Full Version : "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." on DVD
X15-A2 03-21-2006, 10:52 PM OK, "bootleg DVD" but still "DVD".
I bought a set of these on EvilBay at just a hair over $1 per episode (105 episodes) and have been really enjoying watching this show again. These are a mixed bag of copies, about half appear to have been DVD recorded directly off the air (very nice copies) while the rest are mastered from old video tape. The "off-air" copies are great and most of the video ones aren't so bad that you can't watch them (a few are really bad but most come up to the level of "fair" at least). Someone has gone to great lengths to produce these too, there are no commercials and they even have nicely done menus. It is great to see this cult-hit show again (those of you with cable may have been able to watch it again but those of us who are cable-challenged haven't had the pleasure) which brings me to my point; why haven't the studios officially released this hit show on DVD??
It is really great fun to watch all the familiar "Trek" actors parade through the show, often many times, just like in "Time Tunnel" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".
I think the studios (or whoever it is that owns this show) are really missing out on a big market.
Zorro 03-21-2006, 11:56 PM The American Channel runs "The Man From U.N.C.L.E" and I've been pleasantly surprised at how well the show holds up - unlike some other childhood faves of mine. Don't know why it hasn't hit DVD yet.
John P 03-22-2006, 08:36 AM A friend burned me copy of the original pilot recently. Even for a very-first episode, with Ilya only an incidental character, it was a fantastic show.
MODELBUILDER2 03-23-2006, 02:09 AM Hi Zorro, Do you know who carries the American Channel? I have Dish and have never seen it listed. I also did a searched for "The American Channel" and couldn't locate it. Thanks in advance.
python 03-23-2006, 09:52 AM I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the studio bigwigs decide which TV shows get released on DVD.
I was browsing at Best Buy and couldn't believe the utter crapola that was out there.....some truly bad TV shows in beautiful boxed sets.
Where's UNCLE, The Untouchables, Bilko, Car 54, etc.
PhilipMarlowe 03-23-2006, 10:08 AM I haven't seen Man from U.N.C.L.E. play on any channel since the sixties, back in the eighties somebody(Nick?) used to show The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. iirc.
beeblebrox 03-23-2006, 10:29 AM "Open channel D"

Sorry, I got the name wrong: http://www.goodtv.com/
I get it on Time Warner Cable in Raleigh, NC.
MODELBUILDER2 03-23-2006, 08:54 PM I just checked the web site, Wow! What a great line up of classic shows that I haven't seen in many years. I have Dish and wonder if they will ever broadcast this channel? Keep getting price increases and less viewing choices.
And what ever happen to the Horror channel that we heard about a long while ago?
Zorro 03-23-2006, 10:31 PM Yeah. I don't watch the channel often but I have enjoyed The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Combat, and The Gallant Men - which were must viewing for my 9 year-old self way back when. I've seen both good and bad episodes of Combat and The Gallant Men (Combat seemed to pull out the "German soldier disguised as a Yank captures Saunders and his crew" storyline about every fourth episode as the series got long in the tooth) but The Man From U.N.C.L.E. had good writing, good actors, a good budget, and it's tongue planted firmly enough in cheek that it retains considerable charm 40 years down the road.
Bruce Bishop 03-24-2006, 02:31 AM About 15 years ago I discovered that TNT (I think it was) had been running UNCLE for quite some time. I managed to catch a few episodes before they stopped showing it, and I also found a few tapes to rent at Hollywood Video back then.
The one thing I found odd to me, at first, was how slow-paced the shows seemed to be after seeing all the quick-cut action-oriented tv and movies currently available. It took me a few episodes before my mind was able to get in the proper condition to watch the UNCLE shows without feeling that way. I think part of it was particular episodes, and part was that I was just used to faster pacing.
I really did enjoy the shows though, and would love to have the series on DVD. It is one of of the highlights of my youth, right up there with Aurora model kits.
I Spy and The Saint, along with Secret Agent were also favorites which I think held up well, although I have only seen a handful of episodes of each since I was a kid back in the 1960's.
