View Full Version : Do you race R/C all year?
OvalTrucker 03-19-2006, 06:22 PM In Michigan carpet oval racing is basically seasonal.
If a track was open year 'round to race indoors on the carpet, would you still race as often? By often I mean at least twice a month or more.
Many drivers switch to offroad/outdoor racing in the summer.
Some guys do totally different hobbies in the summer.
So, if you had to choose what would you do?
Please participate in the poll even if you are not from Michigan.
BAR 26 03-19-2006, 06:59 PM I would race 7 days a week if i could lol
OvalTrucker 03-19-2006, 07:09 PM Me too! If I was rich and famous!! Or at least sponsored!
KenBajdek 03-19-2006, 07:12 PM I just love to race! I prefer carpet to outside but outside has a more realistic feel to it than carpet does. I just like the change. Each has its own pros and cons.
We have tried to run carpet oval here in Elkhart, IN in the early summer months and have given up quickly due to low turnout. We have had better luck with the nitro classes for the summer with a few electric classes mixed in. There is way too much going on in the summer to get the same level of interest in the middle of winter. We will be attempting to run outside this year on a concrete gokart track that was left over after the series went bankrupt. The track is located about 25 minutes south of South Bend, IN. The owner of the property has given us permission to use the track for a small fee. We will try to get nitro and electric classes to run. We will be running AMB scoring and electric will be available to. We are hoping to get some interest to run down here this summer. PM or email if anybody has an interest.

98Ron 03-20-2006, 04:25 PM Down here in FL, there is no season only hot and hotter, we can race caps every week, unless it's raining.
burbs 03-20-2006, 04:29 PM jflack, DK47, pepe,
do you guys race on carpet with caps?
No they dont.. caps are for banked asphalt, and concrete tracks.. Some do run foam tires on asphalt as well..
i don't race carpet at all!
Fl Flash 03-20-2006, 07:57 PM Just exactly what is this "Off Season" you speak off? Did I mention I love florida
Bob Wright 03-20-2006, 08:43 PM I'd run caps all year around if I could.
Foam tire racing is expensive and dirty.
Kenwood 03-20-2006, 08:47 PM I put race all year if possible***But I race real cars on saturdays..I hear rumors that a local track will be starting a thursday or friday program...if they do that I will race year round..
There is no where remotely close tto run caps..Id be all about dsome outdoor oval but I cant do much with my real car schedule..
OvalTrucker 03-20-2006, 09:23 PM Just exactly what is this "Off Season" you speak off? Did I mention I love florida
Up here in the Great White North we have two kinds of weather. Cold and Colder. These are affectionately referred to as "seasons".
In between these 2 seasons we have 1 day called Spring.:) Spring usually occurs in May. Sometimes in late June. We also have 1 day called Fall. Fall usually coincides with July 4th. But has come as late as Labor Day.:D
R/C carpet racing is popular in the winter on carpet in large buildings, with lots of friends and fun competition. Oh, and a furnace if you race at one of the nicer places.
In the 'so-called' off season we can race in the dirt. Or mow the lawn.
So,
zoom jr. 03-20-2006, 10:02 PM look a chicken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
rcgen 03-20-2006, 11:58 PM Off Season??? We race every weekend be it at the home track or a track within two hours LOL. It's all done outdoors. No carpet just asphault and parking lot racing. Oh we do stop racing for the hurricanes and bad weather such as rain. To cold to race, we change our race program for the day time. Racing in Florida is the greatest...come on down join us....
Scott M 03-21-2006, 12:51 AM Down here in Arizona the only carpet track yanked the carpet and filled the building with dirt. Soooooooooooooo we run outdoors year around.
We run in sweatshirts on New Years and as little as possable on the 4th of July, all outdoors on banked tracks and parking lots. All foam!
We just ended a 142 day spell without rain and wouldn't you know it the 143rd day was a race day:( I have only not raced 3 weekends in a year and a half - rain.
Scott

Same here, what is a off season?
OvalTrucker 03-21-2006, 04:03 PM Well, apparently "off-season" for you guys is when you sleep.
Lucky Dogs!!
jenzorace 03-21-2006, 05:00 PM Ive raced every weekend since 1987. Ive raced 1/12 scale road touring cars carpet oval dirt oval offroad 1/8 scale buggys 1/10 scale 4x4 buggy 2wd buggys trucks. The past few years tracks have come and gone. I started racing mountain bikes about 4 years ago. We have 7 mtb races this year, so thats 7 weekends i wont be racing rc. Whoa i still can race weekdays!!! Lots of people getting back into dirt oval. Im planning on buying a new dirt oval car. Bob W wouldnt it be awesome to race brushless with capped tires?
OvalTrucker 03-21-2006, 06:28 PM I just discovered a go cart track about 5 miles from my house. It's a dirt oval about 100 yards around or so.
I'm thinking brushless something.......
7mmRACING 03-21-2006, 06:57 PM Indoor clay oval til the end of april, and then outdoor dirt oval weekly til october... foams.. no carpet
Bob Wright 03-21-2006, 08:32 PM Jenzo-we race brushless on caps every Tuesday and Saturday at the Triclone in West Bend WI starting at the end of May. There is even a rumor of a BL only weekend race.
OvalTrucker 03-22-2006, 11:25 AM Indoor clay oval til the end of april, and then outdoor dirt oval weekly til october... foams.. no carpet
What tires do you run on clay? What types of cars or trucks?
hobbyten 03-22-2006, 04:07 PM scott where's this track at? is it the one in oil city.
OvalTrucker 03-22-2006, 04:11 PM Yeah Al, It's in Oil City. Real Close to my house. It may be a little too big for R/C. But, you know as well as I that you can always gear it to the moon!
You going to Josh's Saturday?
If so, bring your truck. People love the truck.
I'm going as long as I don't get called into work.
swtour 03-26-2006, 12:39 AM On the Central and South Coast of California we get to pretty much race ALL year.
The South-West Tour Oval Series runs ONE race a month from February to November, plus a special NON POINTS event in December. So that's 11 months that we have at least ONE event.
If I could, I would run brushless with caps year round, less expensive than foams and the setup stays in the car, you're not always changing tweek and stagger to keep the car good.
mredzadventure 03-26-2006, 02:07 PM Man all of this talk of running all year, sweat shirts out doors on New Years Day!!! UGG! Here in MI if summer falls on a sunday we have a picinic :hat:
When we had our local indoor track with carpet oval and off road dirt. It DIED in the summer. I guess you guys in the south don't have that problem (Lucky Dog's) But here in the Grand Rapids area It seems like any track oval on road, any thing here is struggling to stay afloat. I think And I hope I'm wrong we have 2 tracks in GR. Paved oval WHATS THAT! :freak: I would love to Give that a try. They used to have one In Battle Creek. I think it is still there I don't know if it is used though. I know the touring thing is popular in our neck of the woods and it's tough to get people out on a consitant basis. So ya have to race what people want. Just some thougts.
mbeach2k 03-26-2006, 05:45 PM dirt oval in oil city??????????
sounds good when were and how!!
Rick Rad 03-27-2006, 11:32 AM Mike, Its a 1/8 mile kart dirt oval track with a small amount of banking.
They will probably start about middle/end of April on Saturday afternoons.
2 miles south of Oil City, almost 2 miles east on salt river road.
Rick Rad
dizzy 03-27-2006, 10:10 PM I race all year long, just race differant cars.... mainly pan cars on carpet in the winter then in the summer I get out the 1/4 scale and go racing with that, I would race that all year long if I could but that would be cold in Jan in Iowa.
Brad Boling 03-27-2006, 10:29 PM Same here, I race all year, but with different types of cars. I race carpet oval in the winter season, and 1/4 scale in the summer season. If I could, I would race the 1/4 scale year round also.
