Hello fellow small engine tinkerers,

I was given a froze up 5kw Generac portable genset with a Tecumseh 10hp motor. It was used during post Hurricane Andrew 1992 and sat until I was given summer 05. I freed her up after a couple of days of messing w her and got her running, just in time for Hurricane Wilma (I live in Ft Lauderdale).

It ran Ok (not great) through about 2 weeks of no power and just before power came back on it died and died but good. OK, I'm happy, did good.

But now I want to repower. Next H season just a few months away. I removed the engine/gen unit from its frame, removed the gen back end, snuck a socket into the front end and removed the 4 bolts attaching to the Tecumseh block, loosened the looong bolt through the middle of the genhead and started to pry thinking the shaft is probably tapered w key and this will take some persuasion.

Then I stopped (before I broke something). Thought I'd look around the web for a friendly neighborhood and maybe see if I missed something and someone might offer some insight.

So how about it, any help? Thanks,

Steve aka Keysdisease :)

I have been dealing with that problem alot, what you need is some good penatrating oil like Gunks Liquid Wrench and some patience. And remember if you do use penatrating oil when you spray it on you need to vibrate or just hit the part for a couple of minutes with a rubber malot. It should come loose depending on how long it has been on there. ~Kyle

Thanks Kyle,

Thats what I thought. Patience pays so I'll just spay and tap. I have found PB Blaster to be great stuff for freeing tight stuff.

So I didn't miss some well hidden screw or bolt?

Thanks again

Thats the stuff I was going to tell you about but I couldn't think of it at the time. Atleast you know about it! ~Kyle

Wellll, it came apart without a struggle. I sprayed and tapped and had a cup of coffe and did it again. I had backed the loooong bolt out a few turns so the thing wouldn't go flying when it did come loose and I was scratching my head when it started to come and stopped and then I realized the loooong bolt was holding it together. Backed it out and the gen head slid right off. No key, just a tapered shaft threaded in the center to accept looong bolt.

Hey Kyle, is there a trick to keeping the brushes in place when I slide this critter back together?

Thanks for the help, I don't have much patience for this kind of stuff, I usually just pull out a bigger hammer so it was good to be told to take it slow and let the lube do it's thing.

Steve

Ya I know what you mean I don't have the patience for it either, but I don't know of any trick to help hold them in place. How many are thier?

2, I'll think I'll take the back cover off and use a couple of long skinny screwdrivers to hold the brushes in until the core slips by. New powerhead comes in Tuesday, frames been sanded and painted and yea ole jenny will be a ready if ole ma nature comes blowing my way.

Thanks, Steve
