View Full Version : Andreas Katsulas- R.I.P.
Seaview 02-14-2006, 06:59 PM May 18, 1946 - Feb. 13, 2006. Portrayed G'kar in babylon 5, as well as Romulan Commander Tomalak in four ST-TNG episodes. Also famous as "the One-Armed Man" in the Harrison Ford version of The Fugitive.
And I was just watching him in "Communion" Sunday evening, believe it or not.
mactrek 02-14-2006, 08:16 PM Wow ... I thought he was brilliant as G'Kar ...Very sad news indeed.
mactrek 02-14-2006, 08:34 PM Odd that the only thing I could find about it on the web was on the SciFi Channel website. (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=1&id=34628) :(
Jim NCC1701A 02-15-2006, 04:59 AM That is sad news.
I loved him as G'Kar, he gave the character just the right amount of menace, compassion and humor.
Not even 60... too young :(
iamweasel 02-15-2006, 06:58 AM He played G'Kar to a "T", he and Londo made B5.
John P 02-15-2006, 08:49 AM AW CRAP!! :(
There goes any future B5 project. Without Rick and Andreas, it just won't be the same.
I'd heard a while ago that he'd come down with lung cancer. He didn't want any publicity over it, and kept to himself. He was a lifelong smoker.
This is a really sad day. His G'kar character was wonderfully developed, as he started as another war monger, and thru his dealings with Londo and the Centauri Emperor became quite a warm and complex one. He was also one of a few actors who could tolerate the vast make-up and oversized contact lenses to become G'Kar.
B5 was a story told from Londo's view and G'Kar was his main opponent. It was that dynamic that made even thin stories work.
Dave Hussey 02-15-2006, 10:01 AM Very sad news and ditto what everyone has already said.
I immensely enjoyed his vibrant and colorful portrayal of G'Kar. Indeed, for me the chemistry between G'Kar and Londo was one of the most entertaining rivalries / friendships I have ever seen on TV. I especially recall one scene where Londo and G'Kar are enjoying a drink after the Commander's wedding and Londo asks where G'Kar's removable prosthetic eye (with relatively long range transmission capability) is!

A Taylor 02-15-2006, 10:35 AM Very sad, he was an excellent actor and a really nice guy.
He really was brilliant as G'Kar.
El Gato 02-15-2006, 12:30 PM The man was not properly recognized for his ability to emote a wide range of emotion through all that makeup. I understand it was like having a second set of skin... which made me even more impressed. Very sad news about his passing and he will be missed indeed.

John P 02-15-2006, 01:38 PM Smokers, take heed.
Quit, okay?
iamweasel 02-15-2006, 02:56 PM Smokers, take heed.
Quit, okay?
I did, after 20 odd years and I would second what John said. It's not as hard as it might seem, in fact it is only as hard as you make it.
ClubTepes 02-15-2006, 10:06 PM Smokers, take heed.
Quit, okay?
Ok, listen to this.
Someone whom I know, had their father die suddenly from smoking.
While down for all the funeral planning, this person (also a long time smoker) took their fathers last pack of unfinished cigerettes, and smoked them.
1 in 3 smokers die from smoking, 1 in 3.
33.3333%
Look at three friends of yours who smoke. Chances are one of those three people is going to die from their smoking.
iamweasel 02-15-2006, 11:29 PM My ex father-In-law is going through cancer now and he isn't much older then me. Hell of a nice guy but he too waited too long to give up smoking. We still hope he'll make it through, he's made it longer then the doctors gave him.
jheilman 02-16-2006, 02:16 AM I thought Andreas was great in his guest roles in TNG and in "The Fugitve." I was shocked to learn he was so young.
Both of my parents were heavy smokers who have now quit. I'm so glad I didn't have to get nasty. It comes down to life or death. Your grandkids would like to remember you. Want to be around so they will? STOP SMOKING!
MitchPD3 02-16-2006, 03:14 AM On the average 365,000 Americans die each year from smoking or smoking related illness. For comparison, on the average 105,000 die each year due to alcohol or alcohol related accidents, but these figures are not set in stone. Every website you go to quotes a different stat. So far everyone pretty much agrees to one thing, Smoking is the #1 killer and Alcohol is #3.
People are so quick to jump down a smokers throat and admonish them. I am a respectful smoker. I don't smoke in public, I don't smoke in the house(respecting my wifes and kids wishes) and if I were to come visit at your house, you could be damned sure I would repect your wishes as well. So, I don't impose myself on anyone and I agree that other people should be the same. But what about that all elusive drunk driver? In a short 5 minute drive how many people has he endangered (see Scott Baxters thread in Movies for Modelers if you haven't already)?
I have lost count on how many body bags I have filled because of DWI/DUI drivers.
It would be so easy to say "Well, let's ban cigarettes and booze" but we all know that will never happen.
In a nutshell, if you're a non-smoker, but like the occasional drink then decide you need to drive home, please don't impose yourself on me, my family, and all those other sober drivers out there.
If you're a non-smoker and non-drinker, you have my utmost respect.
Dave Hussey 02-16-2006, 08:40 AM Well said, MitchPD3.
I agree that drunk drivers are a scourge to society today. But if anyone is pestering you personally about smoking, understand that its because they care about you.
As for me, I don't drink as a rule, nor do I smoke. On the topic of smoking, its one that I am particularly passionate about; you'll see why in the next paragraph. Did you know that smoking related illnesses kill at least 50% of all smokers? Also, very few people take up smoking after the age of twenty. That means that the big tobacco companies are targetting our children to be their future customers despite the established health concerns and the many laws which prevent sale of tobacco products to minors. I hope that angers you and others here.
Finally, my own younger brother died 13 years ago at the age of 29 of a smoking related massive heart attack, just three weeks shy of his 30th birthday. He left a nine month old son and my parents are still devastated. I have no other brothers or sisters; it was just me and him. Now its just me and I'd give the world to have him back to take his kid to hockey practice or to drop by my place to make fun of my "silly models and dumb space shows".

John P 02-16-2006, 08:52 AM Mitch, just because there are other things you can die from doesn't mean you should keep committing suicide in one particular way.
My Dad quit smoking in his 60s, IIRC. He suffered thru Emphasima in his 70s, which was already underway when he quit. Then right after he turned 80 they found cancer in his esophagus. It spread to his lungs almost immediately. Two months after they found it, he died. 15 Years or more after he'd quit.
It's never too soon to quit. Could be too late, though.
MitchPD3 02-17-2006, 02:05 AM I want to apologize if I came across as overbearing. The house we are living in came on the market and for the last month we have been busting our rumps fixing it up. Last two weeks have been really stressful. Have been working every night, getting couple hours sleep, working on house when weather would allow. We got approved for the loan and realtor was going to order the appraisal. I'm thinking around Monday, plenty of time to finish. At 5:15 this eve. appraiser calls, he'll be here in about 15 minutes. Talk about a mad dash to the finish line.
Needless to say, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, formal dining room,5 ton central heat/air, 2000sq.ft. masonry home on two city lots: Appraisal $65,000 estimated. Selling price: $25,000. I think we got a good deal!
But once again, I want to apologize if I offended anyone
Dave Hussey 02-17-2006, 08:24 AM Me Offended? Nah!
Excellent price on the house! Why so cheap? Wait! Could it be -
haunted?!!!
LOL!! :jest:

John P 02-17-2006, 08:46 AM Yeah, wow, our house is half that size on a tiny lot and just got assessed for 399k!
El Gato 02-17-2006, 11:59 AM Needless to say, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, formal dining room,5 ton central heat/air, 2000sq.ft. masonry home on two city lots: Appraisal $65,000 estimated. Selling price: $25,000. I think we got a good deal!
Oh my goodness... houses can still be bought for a reasonable price??
IIRC, it takes 20 years for your lungs to heal from the damage caused by heavy smoking. It's amazing that the human body can heal after all that damage, but it can.
