View Full Version : NY Comic Con A Taylor 02-14-2006, 01:40 PM Anyone planning on attending? http://www.nycomiccon.com Looks like I might be going. AT Eric K 02-14-2006, 02:05 PM Not sure what day(s) I can attend, but will let you know as next week looms. I'll look you up :) Eric Trek Ace 02-15-2006, 11:27 PM Too far for me. San Diego is much closer. I'd be interested to find out how it is, though. A Taylor 02-16-2006, 12:51 PM Oh, I'll still be in San Diego as well! Stop by the Hermes Press booth at San Diego and say hello, Trek Ace - I'll be there signing my new book, "The Future Was Fab: The Art of Mike Trim". I'll post a report from NY as well. AT Trek Ace 02-17-2006, 02:08 AM Thanks! I'll do that. A Taylor 02-28-2006, 01:49 PM Well the NY Comic Con was an... interesting trip. I went with my FAB Gear business partner Rob Yancey. We got there Friday around 3 pm and picked up our badges. Walked through the rather dinky (as compared to the San Diego Comic Con International) dealer's room and were very surprised at just how little of the Javits Center they were using. The dealer's room and 1 or 2 other large-ish rooms for screenings and panels were on a lower floor, then one room a level up for gaming. We hung around in the food court area and met up with a few friends we didn't know were coming, then went to dinner and back to the hotel. There were maybe 2000 people or so there on Friday as far as I could tell. Saturday was a different story entirely. The crowds got so large that the fire marshal made the promotors let people into the dealer's room only as an equal number of people exited. This created very long lines around the lobbies, and eventually forced the show to stop selling badges entirely around 1 pm or so. Eric K. got turned away, as we found out later. Eventually we made one more run through the room at about 5 pm. There really wasn't much there that I was interested in, and I wound up spending more $$ in local NY shops like Jerry Ohlinger's movie materials store, conveniently located a half block from our hotel. We did eventually meet up with Eric K. for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square on Sunday and had a great time hanging out with him. When we left, we ran into "Clerks" and "Chasing Amy" director Kevin Smith on the street and chatted with him for a few minutes, he was very nice. Wound up spending more time walking to and from the convention than actually in it, so it was a bit of a wasted trip on that account. Hopefully they learned their lessons regarding the crowds and will make better accomodations for them next year - if they do another show next year. We had a good time, it's been a few years since I've been to Manhattan so it was good to get around and see a few sites, hit a few stores, etc. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
