View Full Version : K&N of yesteryear
roadking2000 02-14-2006, 12:44 AM just my opinion, back in the day when karen and nick owned the track when i raced there in the early 90's sundat was the day for racing. It didnt matter whether you were running pan, tranny car or truck, if you had three or more in one class nick would run a class for you. cant remeber if it was 2 or 3 qualifiers and a main, but either way sunday was the day and talk about always one hell of turn out.top three places got something either trophies or gift cert. to hobby shop. al this with a 10.00 race fee. also back in the day the store was very heavily stocked with parts for the most common cars and trucks, also had soda and snacks. now lets foward about ten years later to early millenium when steve and jimmy owned the track. racing split on many nights, legends and spec on thurs, fri nothing due to racing at the big track once april came, sat was stadium trucks, sun was back to oval racing. now the store was poorly stocked, very little eye candy for merchandise, cant remember if there were any snacks or not. the first three places got nothing, except for points when they were running a points series for what ever classes.now all this for the same ten dollar race fee.only thing was complaining about makin no money.the best part of k&n a few years ago was the fact that them and manchester were just about identical in rules and classes except for touring car k/n didnt have them. this point being you could race 2-3 times a week the same classes and not have to deal with too much equip. change. now k/n under another new rigime, havent been there in three years, but im looking into the sk mod class and cant figure what the rules are and what days everyone is racing. i know madness is on sat, montvile is on fri?,now what day is k/n on and is eveyone on the same page for rules???? also i looked at the web site and the store stock looks very weak.figure need to take a popularity contest and see whos running what and be able to stock a couple of each car/truck in parts.if money is an issue raise the race fee a little, or come up with some sort of membership to track or club and be able to entitle card holder to member specials and or discounts. all this feasible to getting member money up front to cover repairs upgrades,etc... also talked to speedzone and it really appears that he really has no enthusiasim at all about oval racing, seems he built atrack and just to lazy to move acouple of pieces to run oval.im going off in atangent sorry. i guess what im saying i want to go racing again, need to know definitive answer on whos got what goin on and what rules are equivelant, i like to travel to different tracks, but need to keep on a budget. P.S. cant beat running on a banked oval, its like our own little daytona.touring cars can run it ever hear of the 24 hours of daytona
jonnycash 02-14-2006, 01:16 AM well, quite a speach. I know Chad (owner of K/N) is working on rules for S/K cars. Montville is 4-cell solid chassis s/k's and madness is 4+6 cells/k's (obviously seperate classes). The 6-cell guys (myself included) went to speedzone, and he was very attentive to us, and spent a good portion of the morning making the track an oval for the 6 of us that were there. The neot (north east OVAL tour) is going to speedzone on May 7th(sun), and K/N march 19th, along with different tracks each month. Get back into the scene, check out the different tracks, and jump on the tour... Hope to see you racing soon, to much time away can make a man go crazy...
ovalrc 02-14-2006, 07:31 AM I too remember the early 90's racing at K&N. I can remember Sundays when there were 12 to 15 mains. We had to squeeze in at times to allow everyone a pit space. Unfortunetely those days are gone and I don't see those numbers coming back. There are many reasons the numbers have shrunk, racers grew out of the hobby and no new blood replaced them, other tracks that used to be in the area closed and those racers got out of the hobby, ie Plainville, Fox Hill, and some others that had racers travel to K&N. I agree that after Karen and Nick sold the track the numbers dwindled, but if you remember, they were starting to decline before they got out. I think with Chad's recent changes being incorporated things will start to turn around for K&N, I know I'm pulling for it. Nick's NEOT has proven that a tour type race can bring in racers, it's things like this that will get the numbers back up, I think the new first timers will get hooked on the track just as most of us locals have. See you at the track, Bill B
Danielle 02-14-2006, 05:06 PM Wow alot of time and effort was put into these thoughts... Chad hasnt been on yet today - nor yesterday but I will make sure he takes a look. Im speechless, which is hard for me....Im the one known for posting tooooo many things on this site..LOL
Tranny Car Man. 02-23-2006, 11:53 PM Hey Guys,Friday night the 17 is the first night of the by- monthly racing series, lets go up and give them some support.Lets see how many classes can show up,Id like to see some 10th scale trucks to come and it would be like the good old days again.
Come on and "LETS GET IT ON", "go fast and turn left"
See yah there.
rickster58 02-24-2006, 11:08 AM I too first ran at K&N the last year that Nick & Karen owned it. I had visited during the blast the year before and was hooked. I had been racing outdoors on pavement in Northboro, MA. After seeing K&N 's awesome banks and track surface I was hooked, but family circumstance and my job kept me from returning. I had only been racing at K&N for 4 months, and then had to quit, until last June (2005). Well I'm back and lovin every minute of it. The carpet's a little worn but it still has more pile than Ozite does when it's brand new.
See you there tonight!

donny 02-25-2006, 09:22 PM 4 cell killed oval. It turned racing into a battery war that newbies cannot compete in. So there goes any new blood. The same thing would have happened no matter who owned the track. The only cool oval race to watch at the Snowbirds was Mod 6cell oval. That just my 2 cents.
roadking2000 02-26-2006, 07:50 PM i think that affordablity is the key to racing.spec classes are the bomb. could be pushing but even sk's can be more affordable, ill leave that for another thread. batteries are a killer in this hobby. 1500 sport pack classes are the best for intro classes. manchester used to pack the house with their truck class 1500 packs, rubber tires 25-30 trucks a night on frid. even the legends limiting batteries radio, and speed control. everyone on the same page and no one feeling like they are inferior to anyone else more based on driving skill than anything else. plus the fact that parts were cheap
