Whats the base line that most guys are using for front end set up with an Associated style suspension ?

--toe in or out
--small , med , lrg servo saver
--tie rod angles, up/down , front/back
--left steering arm lower than right ?
--IRS block -pin location ?
--ackerman gain at 1/4" steering travel?
--Ect.

I realize all tracks will vary , but what would be recommended for a 150' flat carpet oval , wide sweeping corners.

Any thoughts / opinions greatly appreciated

I realize this is a pretty technical question and its probably more trial and error than anythng else.

I would run

No Toe

Small Servo

Tie rods down to servo , and towards front of car slightly

I run the arms the same

I run the same hole, I dont like the IRS blocks, but if i had to run them i woul run both in the middle and out.

Akerman i dont mess with.

Why do you not like the IRS camber blocks ?

Have you ever seen a front end jig for a pan car ?

Thanks

One downfall of the irs blocks is if you like to run alot of ackerman the tie rod will hit the block

Bolink/Racetech used to make a neat camber/caster gauge, still some around in hobby shops or ebay, and RPM has a neat toe gauge out.

UNITY TOOL for front end gauge... Unity tool is on line...I dont have the site handy But if you have the means thats the best jig out there..

Does the unity tool allow you to check ackerman easily?

I'm not sure there is a tool for that adjustment?

In order to check ackerman you will need a set of turn plates marked in degrees. To my knowledge no one makes them for 10th scale cars.

I've actually spent many hours with a digital vernier and toe / camber plates bolted to the axle but have still found on track performance to vary greatly with each vehicle.

Things I have found --------

Small , Med , Large steering servo savers make a huge difference
Hole location in saver "width " greatly changes ackerman
Steering linkage angle greatly changes ackerman gain
All the above affect bump steer
Raising or lowering ball studs at steering arms affect bump steer

Still very confusing as Im sure each track is different and requires diff settings.

Our local tri-oval track with large sweeping corners likes a small servo saver" which I have pinned solid " and that gives the car more ackerman increase quicker.
I usually measure ackerman at the wheel with 1/16 ,1/8 , 3/16 ,1/4 " of wheel travel, TRY IT ,YOU'LL BE AMAZED!
I've had .038 bump steer in to over .030 out.
One thing ,make sure your front springs coil bind before the chassis hits the ground !!!
BUT BACK TO MY THREAD TOPIC ,THERE HAS TO BE A DECENT BASE LINE THAT ASSOCIATED OR SOME FACTORY TEAM USES.

Thanks for your time

I figured maybe you could use the deals for checking the toe and then just turn the wheels and read the degrees on them?? I work on big cars so we have the turn plates and I have looked at trying to do them for our cars but I can't figure out how to do it. I may have to try to find one of the unity deals to play with and see what it tells me.

After looking at this link it appears some one does! If it will allow you to turn the wheels while set up in the toe in mode and not bind it should work for ackerman measurements. After financialy regrouping from the Birds I,m ordering one ;)

Can't you check ackerman by measuring wheel travel in 1/16 th increments and measuring your ackerman gain at each point up to 1/4" ??

I've done it , ----just don't know how much is good or bad

The easiest way to change it is to shim the height of the outer ball studs or change servo saver size ''don't use small '', spring too weak for oval , med or large work well.

I am going to play with a buddies TC setup plate to see if I can make it work with a pan car to check the ackerman. Will post if I find out anything.
