I was watching That Star Wars Bonus DVD To aid in my Painting of the Death Star,That's when I noticed As Much as I LOVE the "Bobba Fett" Chacter I really Hate his ship the Slave 1. To me it looks like an Iron and even it's Take Off looks Clumsy. Mind you I'm sure alot of us here LOVE that Ship,so this is JUST my Opinion As far as Ships I really like There is very high on my List the "Dragon Ship" of the Evil Sid Haig (Dragos) on Jason Of Star Command. I liked the way Filmation Seemed to build Lots of their Vehicles off of (Supposedly) Large Metors They looked Pretty good for Saturday Morning. But What I'm wondering is Your LEAST Favorite Ships Movies or TV I didn't care for Baby Kal's Ship in Superman, It looked to me like a Christmas Ornement! lol I also Despised the Jupiter 2 (Was it called Jupiter ) in the L.I.S. Movie But I don't wanna steal all your answers.

Just watching the B5 tele-movie Legend of the Rangers. Frankly I think they were outta ideas when it came to ship design on that one - the Valen looks like a hash between an EA destroyer and a Klingon K't'inga.

I'm going to get hell for this, but I never understood what the big deal was about the Millenium Falcon. I love the FM model because of the technical detail that went into engineering it and bringing it to market. I won't say it's the worst sci fi ship out there, but I just don't get the appeal of the design.

Blasphemy I say, BLASPHEMY!!!

While I can't say it is the worst, I never cared for Padme's ship in Episode 1. Just a chrome-plated SR71 basically. While I love the source, it seemed like a rip-off.

It WAS a rip-off of the SR71 design.

I know this will hurt some people but I can't say I really care for any of the Star Wars ships from the Episodes 1, 2, or 3. I especially dislike the naboo fighter. that thing is pretty but as far as fighter design?

Does anyone remember Battle Beyond the Stars? I hated Nell and since I was a ragin hormone teen when that came out you would think I would be more fond of the flying breastages.

Hate the Searcher from Buck Rogers season 2. Does Tv Count?

Cheers,

Any ship from the movie StarCrash!
Its one thing to use kit parts for detail, but some of the ships had the whole parts trees used straight out of the box!

Let me think for moment....From Star Wars The MF for me as well. While it's grown on me over the years, I still for the most part dislike the ship. Asymmetry is one of my biggest pet peeves, also I don't like the fact that the ship's design was inspired by a burger with an olive on its side. The Tantive IV is pretty horrid as well, so is the B-wing starfighter, the Nebulon B frigates and, oh yes, Fett's Slave1.

From Star Trek, The Enterprise-J first and foremost. The Oberth class, The Ambassador class, the Norway class, the NX Class, and I don't know if this counts or not but Comm Station Epsilon IX.

It is a big list. ;)

I'll admit it(probably be the only one).. I don't care for the Enterprise refit. To me, it is aesthetically unappealing and just plain boring. When it was destroyed in TSFS, I thought "it's about time, now they can move on to a better starship"...but noooooo, we get the E-A.

Asbestos suit and body armor now be donned as I speak!

It's good to know I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" the Millennium Falcon design, a.k.a. the "Pork Burger." It's basically a saucer with a lot of crap stuck all over it more or less at random. And how are those cargo-loading "mandibles" supposed to work?I'll admit it(probably be the only one).. I don't care for the Enterprise refit. To me, it is aesthetically unappealing and just plain boring.I had much the same reaction when I first saw ST:TMP, but I've come to appreciate the Refit design over the years. It's still recognizably Matt Jeffries’ baby, but with the fine detail needed for the big screen — and I even like the Art Deco-ized warp nacelles.

If one can go back that far, the 1954 British cheapie "Devil Girl From Mars" had one of the stupidest-looking spaceships ever — looks like a sink strainer or a brass doorknob.

The Defiant from DS9. It looks like a freakin waffle iron with handles.

The droid tri-fighters from Episode III. I built the Revell kit, looked at it for a day or two, and threw it in the garbage so I'd have shelf space for something good looking.

I hated the Excelsior at first, but it grew on me, and now I love it.

NX-01. Sorry, but these is nothing attractive about it at all.

The Leonov from 2010. Again, nothing there to like.

Pretty much ANYTHING from the various TREK shows and movies was lame. Same for the Spindrift. Same for the Space Pod too. Uncle Martins Ship as well.
I like the Jupiter 2 but still think the big window just invites a meteor strike.

While I wasn't a fan of the Earth Alliance ships on B5, I DID like the Shadows and Vorlons and the Minbari 'anglefish' ship.

Gets my vote too. Butt ugly, unfaithfull to the original, and with a really stupid and impractical interior.

And they had a big budget, unlike the paper plate UFO's in Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I imagine I'm not the only one unfamiliar with some of these designs. It would be nice, if there was a page of thumbnail pix of all space ship prop designs, going all the way back to the beginning of movies and TV.

I like TOS Trek designs, and some later Trek, but I hate the D (liked TNG show, though.) I love the real V-2 design, and so also like some rocket-style designs.

The Spindrift certainly gets my vote for the silliest Irwin Allen vehicle design. It's supposed to be a sub-orbital shuttle, but it has no wings, nothing resembling an airfoil or lifting-body shape, no point where it could piggyback onto a booster or launch vehicle, and no apparent landing gear. However, it does have a superfluous bubble dome, a silly-looking antenna, inexplicable flashing lights in what are presumed to be engine air intakes, and a cavernous interior with just six passenger seats! Have to admit, though — it still looks cool. That is, if you dig flying turtles!

LIkes and dislikes are so personal. My likes are somewhat swayed by the aesthetic shape of a model. For example, I find Slave 1 to be a fascinating shape.

On the dark side, I tend to think of things like why did they put the engines there or wouldn't have made sense to have all that housed in one hull. Let's face it, movie and TV sci-fi designers are always trying to produce something original and by doing that, they leave behind any common sense. Look at the Aliens Dropship. Interesting, menacing, very military - a great looking ship but the damn thing could never fly and just where did they put the engines?

So . . . worst designed ship? Hands down, the TOS Enterprise (and since everything else in Star Trek is based on that design, almost every other Trek ship - except the Klingon BOP which is a beautiful thing). Saucer, engineering hull, warp nacelles - you'd think by that time they'd have figured that is was cheaper, more efficient, easier to maintain, etc. if you built it all into one hull and painted it something other than light grey.

But, of course, that's only my opinion and I know it.

Without commenting on the engineering practicality of a design, I like the look of:

Spindrift
Millenium Falcon
Enterprise, TOS through E and the NX-01
The B5 earth ships with the rotating sections to create gravity
Both the original Jupiter II and the movie one

I just can't take to the Slave 1. Like Lon said, to me it looks like a flying iron.

But if you want to get into design practicality, ships like the DS9 Defiant and both Jupiter II's are likely the best. They are compact and do not have sections connected by pylons and tubes like the various Enterprise designs that would be placed under incredible stresses during acceleration and maneuvering.

Huzz

Y3a
01-27-2006, 11:16 AM
I agree that ships with pylons and struts are sure to have structural problems, but in space, and according to the way they were powered some could be practical. The Warp Drive warped space, so I don't know what stresses the ship itself actually had. I would think ships that went faster than light and DIDN'T have a space/time warping system would have been most stressed. The original Jupiter 2 comes to mind. (HyperDrive...Uh-huh...sure)
I like the Babylon 5 Shadow crabs and the Vorlon ships (both organic) for the way they went in and out of hyperspace. The 'First Ones" ships seemed to be exercises in 3d animation.

Tardis..... Dunno about that. It's just a big room on Gallifrey with a door they project elsewhere in time/space.

I like a lot of different styles though I definitely have my favorites. It's hard for me to hate a ship if I take into context the budget, the special fx technology, the prevalent style, etc.

There are very few ships that I hate but I've got to agree that the Jupiter 2 from the movie version of L.I.S. is utterly abhorrent.

The original series' Jupiter 2 seemed, in shape, to be roughly derived from the NASA capsule designs and the C-57. It offered, if not logically arranged nor proportioned, a ship that was compact and cool to look at.

The movie version of the ship looked to be an oversized Honda Acura with a putrid paint job to boot.

What I was expecting before I saw any pics or ads for the movie was something like the Jupiter 1 that they showed on screen. THAT was a cool update to the original.

The Battle Beyond the Stars abortion is also one of the most-hated on my short list.

As nice as some of the ships on L.I.S. were, the "guest ships" were usually cheap pieces of junk that didn't even have walls. In addition to being awful to look at, they were insulting to boot.

I'd call the earth starships on Stargate bland or boring. I don't hate them but I definitely don't like their plain, boxy appearance. The same goes for the spacecraft carriers on Space: Above and Beyond. B5's alien ships were usually too organic and improbable for my tastes though most of the earth ships were pretty cool.

The Reliant, simply because ILM just couldn't help themselves and had to add greeblies and such when Matt Jeffries original take on Federation ships was to keep the outside smooth and move everything serviceable inside the hull.
Also because it was constantly rolled out in large numbers in DS9. Hey, didn't they have anything newer to use?
And the lack of a navigational deflector - weren't they standard equipment on Starfleet ships? (and yes, I do know about the fan 'solution' of fitting the ship with WADE ;) )
