View Full Version : UPN & The WB cancled! Hello The CW
swhite228 01-24-2006, 05:45 PM NEW YORK - Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will shut down this fall, and their parent companies plan to form a new network called The CW using programming and other assets from each of them.
The announcement was made Tuesday by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns most of WB.
Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.’s ABC, News Corp.’s Fox, General Electric Co.’s NBC and CBS Corp.’s CBS.
The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, when both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., a minority owner of WB.
Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.
The plan includes two hours of programs in prime time each night Monday through Friday and three hours on Sunday evening. It will also offer programming on weekday and Sunday afternoons, and five hours of children’s programs on Saturday morning.
Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

El Gato 01-24-2006, 06:14 PM Collective waste?
beeblebrox 01-24-2006, 06:24 PM I don't think these two networks combined have enough decent programing to make even a mediocre network.

bugs bunny 01-24-2006, 06:29 PM As far as I am concerned both networks stink.
TAY666 01-24-2006, 07:17 PM I actually watch quite a bit of WB's shows.
Gilmore Girls are fun
And if you haven't checked out Supernatural, you should.
My daughter also watches 7th Heaven, One Tree Hill, and Charmed.
So between us, we watch 5 of their 14 shows.
As for UPN, haven't watched anything on that in ages.
I don't think since they canceled Special Unit 2.

Rip 7th Heaven- cause of death $$$$ and declining ratings for new and reruns of the show.

The CW= a cheap way to resuse the computer generated WB graphics by just changing a letter!
El Gato 01-24-2006, 09:10 PM Gilmore Girls are fun
OK, aside from Lauren Graham being a babe and a nice distraction, the show is fun. I watched all of season 1 and most of season 2 and I really enjoyed the it. I only stopped watching it because I did a concerted effort to cut down my TV and Gilmore Girls were a sad casualty (it also conflicted with something else - I think it was Buffy when it moved to UPN, can't recall). At this point I'd be so far behind that I couldn't follow it if I were to squeeze it back in. But anyway, I've been told it hasn't declined in quality, so that's good to hear.
Unfortunately one of the shows I decided to keep at that time was Enterprise, so I really blew it on that one.

Isn't it about time for 7th Heaven and Charmed to be cancelled? Those shows are horrid. Charmed's premise has always been ludacris and 7th Heaven is now becoming very poorly acted.
CJTORINO 01-24-2006, 11:23 PM Hmmmmm.......
I Guess that since my satellite provider doesnt give me either channel,
and probably wont offer this new morph...
I think CW stands for:
CANT WATCH.

This is 7th Heaven's final season.
I think this might be the last season for Charmed as well.
What is wrong with Charmed's premise?
It was actually a good show for several year. The past few have been kind of pathetic, but this latest season hasn't been anywhere near as bad.

Actually, if you get the family chanel (can't remember if it is Fox Family or ABC Family anymore) they have the reruns on every weekday at 5.
I still find them entertaining and humorous even after seeing them all several times.
TAY666 01-25-2006, 02:06 AM And I say again.
Anyone who hasn't checked out Supernatural, give it a try.
This is what the Nightstalker remake should have been like.
Decently cool monster of the week, with a loose running theme / story arc holding it all together.
Fairly well acted, with beliveable interesting characters.
Plus the classic tunes in each ep really seal the deal for me.
Last week was BOC's -Don't Fear the Reaper
Others of the top of my head are Highway to Hell, Limelight, Hot Blooded, etc.
El Gato 01-25-2006, 01:13 PM Charmed's premise has always been ludacris
Ludacris, as in the rapper?? ;) :jest:
José
i'm in agreement with Tay on Supernatural . good show .

ChrisW 01-25-2006, 01:45 PM I wonder what will happen in markets where there is both a WB and UPN station? Oh boy, dust off the old Chiller theater and Friday night wrestling format!
spe130 01-25-2006, 02:13 PM I think a lot of those low-power UPN stations are going to fold. Quite a few of them were just established to bring UPN into that market.
justinleighty 01-25-2006, 02:51 PM I wonder what will happen in markets where there is both a WB and UPN station?
In those markets, people looking for mediocrity can FINALLY put down the remote!
Ok, actually my wife and I both enjoy The Gilmore Girls.
Oh, crap! Does this mean I have to break my pledge to never watch UPN again after they axed Enterprise?!? I can still watch Gilmore and Smallville, right? It's not actually breaking the promise, is it?
El Gato 01-25-2006, 02:54 PM The press release said that the combined network will air on WB stations, but the UPN affiliate here is owned by CBS. I wonder how they'll work that out.
José
Just Plain Al 01-25-2006, 04:43 PM Around here, not only is the UPN affiliate owed by the local CBS station. The WB affiliate is owned by the NBC station. Talk about potential problems.
DinoMike 01-25-2006, 07:12 PM Oh man.... I SO hope the local UPN affiliate goes back to being an independent station.... back in the day, channel 44 was the source for stuff like Creature Feature with Dr. Paul Bearer... would be nice to see them get back into that kinda groove.
Doubt it will happen, but hey, I can dream....
python 01-26-2006, 03:10 PM I'm underwhelmed.
Kind of like combining a cat turd with a dog turd.

spe130 01-27-2006, 09:47 AM Wasn't CW the guy who sang "Convoy?"
TAY666 01-27-2006, 11:19 AM I thought CW did all the original box art for Polar Lights.
Maybe he should sue for royalties.
:D
