View Full Version : GreenLight vs. JL ... "The Disection"
pms485 01-15-2006, 09:16 PM I had a damaged 69 Mustang Boss 302. It's spoiler was broke off thanks to UPS. I figured, what better opportunity to literally rip it apart and see how it's made! Here's my little photo essay:
I compared the GL 302 to a JL 1970 Boss 302 for basic similarities. Obviously, it's not the same year, but they're close.
Here's the damaged mustang with the spoiler balanced in place. The GL is about 2mm smaller than the JL.

Next, I stripped it and a JL. Here is the completely disassembled GL. If you've ever taken apart a JL, you'll see similarities. The GL cars come with a cool plastic display stand, but unfortunatly it does not fit in a standard Giovanni 108-car case.

Side by side, they are very similar in size. I read a rumor that they were slightly larger than JL. Not so.

...more to come.
Lovemy71Camaro 01-15-2006, 09:21 PM So, overall... How well do you think the Greenlight is made compared with the Johnny Lightning?
pms485 01-15-2006, 09:23 PM Another view of the GL and JL together. The JL is on the right.

Lastly, the wheels on the GL are on solid axles. Ther are not crimped into the chassis. The wheels are two piece, unlike JLs 3-piece. When I read that in a previos thread, I was a little worried how they would pull it off. The detail is excellent.

Overall, these were some of the most anticipated cars of the year for me, even though it is only January! Everything matched up to expectations! These are a great addition to my collection. Even though I have one set (minus one), I can't wait for the second. I hope GL decides to make more!
pms485 01-15-2006, 09:26 PM These feel VERY solid. They are not toy-like or cheap. Shake them, and they don't "clink" and rattle like some other companies. Quality? Easily as good as JL IMO.
Macs_Little_Car 01-15-2006, 09:29 PM Mike
Are they worth the $2 or more extra per car over a JL??

Simply because of the limited run, I say yes. The cars are even serialized. However, if they were a run of say 20,000, then I would say no.
Macs_Little_Car 01-15-2006, 09:34 PM Cool, I know what you are saying
accobra64 01-15-2006, 09:36 PM Thanks Mike for the narration and pictures. Excellent.
It is interesting how GL made its wheel and axle combination.
Cheers. Cobra
Lovemy71Camaro 01-15-2006, 09:36 PM I noticed that they were serialized.. That's a + in my book... How many is the run on these? I haven't seen anything.
CJTORINO 01-15-2006, 09:37 PM Looks like someone at GL pays attention to detail.
The BOSS 302 Mustang for 1969 Did not have a quarter panel airscoop.
And I see that this casting is quite accurate.
GREAT PICTURES Mike! I appreciate the comparison, as I look to find and purchase these for my collection.
edseldave 01-15-2006, 09:45 PM How are the wheels attached to the axles ? Can they be removed from the chassis without damage ? Is the chassis riveted to the body like JL too ?
I saw some of the GM cars at a toy show today . The Impala & GTO are a bit larger than JL's .. The guy wanted too much for them ... I'm still waiting for my set to arrive ...

I believe the number is 2000 of each colour. I had read that somewhere.
I will check it out and let you know if the number is different.

Swifty 01-15-2006, 10:10 PM Looks like a good quality diecast piece to me. Thanks for the pictures of the dissection!
What's next for this pair of Mustangs?
Lovemy71Camaro 01-15-2006, 10:11 PM Turn em into Spoilers and Zingers! :)
Wow....thanks for the great comparison pics. My GL Mustangs are on the way and I am eagerly awaiting them. I was hoping they were a scale that would match up well with my JL Mustangs and it looks like they will from your pics. Do you have the Boss 429 Mustang too? If so, how do the "Boss 429" tampos on the fenders look? They look a tad big from the photos I've seen on the GL website.
pms485 01-15-2006, 10:19 PM What's next for this pair of Mustangs?
I'll let them have their fun tonight. Then, in 9 months, maybe we'll have some little GreenLightnings rolling around. :p

 Naked Mustangs!
69Stang 01-15-2006, 10:33 PM Thank you for the pics and breakdown. I need to buy a set!
Atencio 01-15-2006, 11:26 PM With the Magnum 500 wheels off the RC Boss 302 the car would look perfect. Two things I wish for in a Boss 302:
A Boss 302 without the rear window louvers
A 70 Boss 302 with a shaker.

Well, the Greenlight looks easy enough to customize into a louvreless model. Cut the louvres off the plastic windshield piece, and cut out a piece of plastic from a blisterpack bubble, and voila! A rear window.
edseldave 01-15-2006, 11:37 PM 70 Boss 302 definately needs a shaker hood !! I like the rear window louvers ... My brother Jim had a Grabber Orange '70 Boss 302 w/ shaker & louvers around 1975 / '76 .. Being a Wisconsin car it rusted out pretty quickly ...

Swifty, you're a genius!!!!
G-man 01-16-2006, 08:07 PM As always... great pics Mike. Thanks for the fantastic comparison.

moparmarc 01-17-2006, 01:09 PM I remember a small Diecast Company who became like family in the mid-late 90's, They Had huge Success and Customer Service was Great...
Eurosport94 01-17-2006, 08:26 PM wow thats awesome detail...i love the fat rubber the GL mustang has compared to the JL
i cant wait to get me some of these!!!
mn_dodgeboy 01-18-2006, 12:43 AM These look pretty good. Can you pick em up at general stores or are they web only? They look VERY good quality, and I would LOVE to have some.
Milezone 01-18-2006, 12:17 PM With the run being only 1 of 2,500 these are currently only hobby and specialty markets. So you know where to come get them. ;-)
