Just read an article in my Long Island Newsday nespaper, Three of the eleven ToysRUs stores in Nassau and Suffolk Counties are scheduled to be closed in the near future. I guess news like this follows the Holiday High Peak sales period?

I wonder if this is a nationwide thing or a local thing. Wonder if there is a list of stores that are closing somewhere.

Holy Moly, I was just scanning the Boston Herald online and this head line popped out at me:

Guess it's not an isolated thing!

On a related subject, we just lost our closest KB and Big Lots stores. :(

I'm glad I'm out of the retail business!

One of the TRU here is closing too. That really sucks too. That was the store I found the most stuff at. It actually had no stockers going through the JL's.
You would often find stuff right on the shelf. Really hoping those Zinger 5 packs will show before they close.

That explains the 10-30% off everything in the store sign at one of the locals

There are like 12 of them at the TRU near me. (No WL's)
Need me to pick one (or more) up for you?

I hope the 2 near me don't close. That is the only place I can find any new JL's. (mainly Lancaster store):(

I still need to get out to the Lancaster store. I hit the Harrisburg one today and they had nothing new at all. Well, they did have some new Transformers Alternators that went home with me, but that's a different collecting habit...

Ours will probably be on the list, it's a low volume store. I live in a town that has 1 WM, 1 KM and 1 target & 1 TRU, we used to have a KB but it closed :(

I hope ours stays open.I`d say it`s a mid level selling store. Our city has just 1 and we have 580,000 people here. 40 minutes north or south we have 2 that seem to sell less so if they do close one I`d rather those close.

My local TRU was liquidated all right, liquidated with a few feet of flood water from Hurricane Katrina, and yes, it is closed.

Just found out, my local TRU in Biloxi that got flooded by Katrina is not reopening. I'm not sure if the ones in Mobile, AL (60 miles away) or Hattiesburg, MS (90 miles away) are part of the new closings. Thanks to people shopping at the one-stop shopping Super Wal-Marts for putting some more businesses in the red.

The funny thing is the (3) that are closing in Mass. don't have a Wal*Mart within 20 miles. But the (2) that are staying open have a Wal*mart within a 1/2 mile from it.

Well this is wonderful news. I havent been by my TRU's yet to see, but Ill be going out shortly. As far as WM goes, I was told by the toy manager last night that they hardly ever get in any JL product, and theres only 5 or 6 cars hanging on 6 empty pegs. I guess Ill be doing alot of online buying

My point being that Wal-Mart has expanded each area enough to put people like KB and TRU out of business since most people will just go to Wal-Mart to get everything they want. Smart on Wal-Marts part, but eventually, there will be nothing but Wal-Mart and we will be forced to buy what the choose for us to buy. In addition, for every store that Wal-Mart causes to close is less money for people to spend at Wal-Mart.

Last year when a lot of KB stores were closing, I was discussing this with a WM employee in the the toy department. He was bragging about how WM was making it hard for KB and TRU to compete because they buy huge volume at bigger discounts and then undercut the competition.
First it was KB, now it looks like TRU is next. I guess BIG BOX MARTs will eventually rule the retail world until we have political difficulties with China. With the US manufacturing base going overseas it will eventually be China that dictates prices to Big Box Mart and Americans. Then we will lose even more $$$ in the end. My 0.02.

Went by my TRU again today. Picked up some stuff becuase it was discounted.
Got to the cashier and noticed they were writing over the barcode with a black marker after they rang the item up. When I got up there I asked if she wouldn't put the mark through it She said she wouldn't. I thanked her. Manager was close by and heard. Came over said they had to do it cause it was discounted. I said I collect them and didn't really want the black mark on it and could she just write "no returns" on the receipt. Got a quick and stern "NO". I told her I just hated to deface the card. Got "no we can't do that". I still bought them though. Got home and tried a little rubbing alcohol and came right off. Was the "shiney" cardboard so the marker didn't soak in.

The employees know me and I'm a pretty loyal customer and go in 3-4 times a week.
It's not really a big deal about the mark but I would have thought it was a minor request from a regular customer and could cut me a break. Maybe this is why they are goin' down?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Marked up right at Christmas so they could say they were giving a discount. I promptly put my selections back on the pegs. Yes, I'd say this and the "we gotta mark through the bar code" kind of stuff is why they are going down. Wally's gave little competition to the TRUs around here. In my opinion they took themselves down all by themselves.

To me Walmart & TRU are two different animals, I've worked in both. Walmart is where you go if you just wat "a spederman toy" TRU is where you go if you want "a specific spiderman toy" Unfortunatly most of America is willing to settle for "a toy" in order to get an "always low price"

And if it's the customer service thats bring TRU down then why is WM not going under? They have absoloutly the worst customer service in any retail store! Granted there are a few employees that are customer oriented but they are few and far between.

Know what I see in the future. Walmart will put all the smaller stores under and you will have to shop there for everything from your toys to your goceries to your underware. If you want a certain toy, car, or drawers you'll have to go online to get it. Online will be the only way specialty stores will survive because they can cut out the overhead. I wouldn't be surprised if TRU brick & morter goes under but their online survives.

Just my 2 cents (do I get change?)

I don't think just because there is no WM nearby that a TRU store will be successful. I would imagine that TRU stores that were closed were due at least in part to their inability to make an acceptable profit compared to others. If one is near a WM then so be it. There is one near me that is located right next door to a WM and it has survived so far.

The thing that scares me about WM is what Wyatt suggests; that WM will have the ability to choose what products are made. This happened a while back when the computer game Giants: Citizen Kabuto was released. WM did not like a topless character or the blood in the game and forced the developer to change the game.

There are many reasons that TRU is closing some doors, but I dont think Wal*Mart is one of them. I'm guessing the big reasons in Boston is rising Real Estate costs and theft.

Hello Wyatt,
Nobody "chooses" anything for you to buy.
I get a kick out of all these evil, greedy monster, totalitarian boogie-men you Wal*Mart haters seem to create...
This isn't circa 1950 Soviet Union.
You buy it because you want it or don't care for it. Period.
And if Wal*Mart raises the price on the roll of duct tape to 11.99 a roll, as sure as the sun rises and sets, there will ALWAYS be another Wal*Mart-like wanna-be (Wyatt*Mart? ;) ) waiting in the wings ready to fill the void of being the 'low priced leader". Take that one to the bank.
And for every store that forces itself to close (Wal*Mart forces nobody to close, poor business planning on the part of the closed party does - maybe they hired too many do nothing corporate execs with expensive perks), means that Wal*Mart can create the opportunity to either stock the items that folks want, or allows for (again) another retailer to fill that void.
One feeds off the other.

Hello Atencio,
Are you really bothered that Wal*Mart practices decent moral values (that they listen to the concerns of the MAJORITY of their customer base?)
I'm not.
That they don't care for vulgar or voilent video games (packaged or it's content) suits me just fine. If folks care for that obsene crap that is part of the package design, there are plenty of other retail venues to find it at.

-Peter

Rumor has it that TRU got bought by an investment group. They were waiting until after the holidays to see which stores were more profitable than others and go from there.
