View Full Version : "ALEXANDER"
Zorro 01-01-2006, 04:25 PM Yes. It really is as bad as everybody says it is. Inexplicably, mysteriously bad. This is one of those movies where one minute into it - you already know that everything about the movie is just wrong, wrong, wrong. It smells bad. It's tainted. It's the Showgirls of sword-and-sandal epic filmmaking in the 21st Century. It's Caligula without the Pets and the Porno. Oh - and apparently, the ancient Macedonians all had vaguely Irish accents. Give it up Oliver - you're much too old to be doing whatever it is you're still doing that it would fog your perceptions to this degree.
PhilipMarlowe 01-01-2006, 05:37 PM We watched the HBO debut last night, I gotta agree, it was MST3K-worthy bad. Hard to say who won the The Most Over-acting Ludicrous Portrayal of a Historical Figure award, I'd call it a three-way tie for Val Kilmer, Angelina Jolie and Colin Farrell, with a lifetime achievement nod to Anthony Hopkins.
Val Kilmer lost all the respect and credibility he earned back for Salton Sea & Spartan as soon as he opened his mouth. I haven't been impressed with Farrell in anything yet, and boy is he bad in this! And what was Oliver smoking the day he cast one of the swarthiest guys in movies as the blond hero of his sandal flick?
terryr 01-02-2006, 10:28 PM They promised the DVD would be 'less gay'...like that's the only thing they had to work with.
Zorro 01-02-2006, 10:47 PM I never even got to the "gay" part. I hung in there through the first utterly incomprehensible battle with the Persians and that was all she wrote. Oh yeah, the musical score is atrocious as well.

Yeah, but the guy WAS gay, so to be completely accurate ...

I never realized that the modeling community was filled with homophobes.
To be succinct, Alexander was bi-sexual, which was expected of men in his time. However, he did have too much attachment to his "boyfriend", and that is one of the things that destroyed him. That is why it was stated several times during the film that one must never develop attachments too strong to either a man or a woman.
I read the book that the movie was primarily based upon for my Humanities course, and the author himself in the preface states that there is NO solid proof of many of the events in Alexanders life. 90% of the historical documents pertaining to Alexander were destroyed when the library at Alexandria was burned to the ground.
Oh, and I personally enjoyed the movie and the score. The music is the best thing to come from Vangelis since Blade Runner. Oliver Stone was doing a project that appealed to him, and did the best he could with limited historical data. Stone is at the point in his career now that he can do what he wants pretty much, and damn those who don't like it. I thought the worst acting in it came from Angelina Jolie and her horrible accent.

I thought it sounded like Vangelis! Sorry but, horribly inappropriate music to what was on screen. Droning synthesizer under epic, violent battle scenes is a very bad choice. Limited historical data was not the problem with "Alexander". This movie is an example of bad filmmaking on just about every level. And that's coming from someone who thinks Stone has done some brilliant, important work.

Overreact much?
And how was my statement that they SHOULD include his orientation in any way homophobic?
PhilipMarlowe 01-03-2006, 05:47 PM However, he did have too much attachment to his "boyfriend", and that is one of the things that destroyed him.
Err, doesn't that sorta validate John's whole point? I know everybody has to be all uber-pc these days, but seems to me, if a guy loses his kingdom because he has "too much attachment to his "boyfriend"".......
Overreact much?
And how was my statement that they SHOULD include his orientation in any way homophobic?
'Sides, anybody who read John's post about his Alyson Hannigan dream knows he's no mo'phobe!
bugs bunny 01-03-2006, 06:52 PM woopsies double posties!

Why does this always happen on forums?
Trust me Gay men and Lesbians are the last thing I'm afraid of. :freak:

Sorry John, not over-reacting, just quoted the wrong post. I didn't mean to sound so defensive guys.
I am a little touchy right now about the whole gay thing though. My brother decided to both come out of the closet and reveal that he has been HIV pos for the last decade at Xmas dinner this year. My Gramma fainted.
bugs bunny 01-03-2006, 07:36 PM ^^
Dude Im sorry man! That's rough.
terryr 01-03-2006, 07:38 PM That is so gay.
No wait. that's HETROPHOBIC!!!!!!!!!!
PhilipMarlowe 01-03-2006, 07:50 PM No matter what side of the fence you are on, that's a tough one to spring on Gramma at Thanksgiving Dinner.
I really didn't think John was bashing, and it just goes to show you Alexander was bad on many levels!

Whoa yea!

Almost on all levels, I was pretty close to leaving the theater auditorium before the darned thing ended.
John P 01-04-2006, 09:17 AM Yikes! Poor Gramma!
Anyhoo, we've seen here one thing that's all too common on bboards, and that's the jumping-to-irrational-conclusions-accusation thing. I think there was a study somewhere that said the longer a bboard thread goes on, the more likely someone will be called a racist, a homophobe, or a nazi. It's never a good thing to do.

You're starting to sound like a liberal, John! :freak:

El Gato 01-04-2006, 02:22 PM Blasphemers! All of you...

Brent Gair 01-04-2006, 02:33 PM If you listen carefully, you can hear Alexander humming show tunes.
Dave Hussey 01-04-2006, 03:09 PM Oh? I thought he was humming an ABBA tune..............:jest:
Huzz

Nah, you're all wrong. It was Gloria Gaynor.
