View Full Version : Oval RTR Good or Bad?
competionpark 01-01-2006, 03:52 PM Around here most people haven't ever even seen an oval car. Why, most of the hobbyshops try to sell mainly RTR stuff. Nearly every city has its own local hobby shop, but places like Hobby Town for example normally try to sell you tcs or mts. If a major Oval company such as HD CW Ksg or even Associated produced an RTR package I think it would really help the oval side of rc grow. I preffer to build my stuff, as does nearly everybody on this board, but i think we all would like to see oval racing be as big as monster trucks and touring cars. What do you guys think, would having RTR oval cars be a bad idea?
Milky 01-01-2006, 04:10 PM Why not.
Oval needs a RTR package,we've been saying this for years now,Kenny at Raptor motorsports said he was working on this but this was a while back and haven't heard anymore about it.There's no telling what the future might bring though.
KenBajdek 01-01-2006, 05:39 PM I agree that this sport needs a RTR oval car but the AE, HD, CW, KSG and others would lose their profit margins. I think the car companies are keeping this out for that reason. Look what a RC10 GT cost to build 10 years ago $1000 with radio gear and engine. Now you can buy them all day long at $299. I remember the day when you paid the "retail Price" that was one the box.
Right now a good pan car setup with average electronics would be
(these figures are retail numbers) (I know that radio and esc prices can get really cheap if the volume is there)
$250 chassis (AE)
$150 Radio FM and cheap servo
$100 ESC Quantum Sport
$25 Body
$40 Tires
$50 Cheap peak detect charger
$20 Cheap 1700mah Nicad stick pack
$25 Cheap 540 motor
$660 approx total retail
You would not want to build a RTR chassis that can't be upgraded to a competition level because than the racer would have to buy another chassis.
Other cost savings would to offer fiberglass chassis, tplate only designs. Just a small modification to current cars that are sold to make this happen.
Mr.fastman 01-01-2006, 06:23 PM I think its just a matter of time before one is offered.
competionpark 01-01-2006, 06:31 PM You could do it for alot less than that
fiberglass chassis w/3 basic shocks 125
am radio 35
duratrax esc 30
body 15
tires (foams) 30
cheap stocker 15
total 250
for 250 a person could be nicely equipped while the big companies still make some money, however the money isnt made on the kit, it is replacement parts, and there would be plenty of demand for them, I know my track would love to have a package already made and would buy several in a heart beat to help get oval back to the top, and the manufacturers suppleiers would still sell batts and chargers so more money for them again, its a win win situation
Tim Mc 01-01-2006, 06:46 PM We had this conversation a few months back. We are all in favor of a RTR oval kit...just don't think it will ever come. If only Associated R/C read these posts....lol
Roadsplat 01-01-2006, 08:10 PM Oval needs a RTR package,we've been saying this for years now,Kenny at Raptor motorsports said he was working on this but this was a while back and haven't heard anymore about it.There's no telling what the future might bring though.
Whatever did become of the one Kenny at Raptor was thinking about doing? He had alot of great ideas for it. Hope he hasn't given up on it. I think it would be a big boost for oval if someone would produce it.

Tim Mc 01-01-2006, 08:15 PM I don't think Kenny has given up on his idea. It might be that the cooperation from other suppliers is the hold up?
When suppliers don't work out you go find another one.
duck03 01-01-2006, 09:25 PM Hey Guys I just saw a new proto type RTR pan oval car this week end!! It run its first race in the super spec class and it wasn't bad. I think this will happen and I have seen this car up close. From what I have been told this car will be offered at a hobby shop and they will offer them to any hobby shop. The owner told me that this was the best thing for 10th scale pan cars and he wants to help get new cars in new drivers hands.
More to come in the near future.
Donnie
competionpark 01-01-2006, 11:04 PM who makes the car?
WhirlinGraphics 01-02-2006, 07:32 AM Good.
chad
jsrocket13 01-02-2006, 02:03 PM This is what we need it's a really good idea. I want to know who make's it I want to tell the owner of my local hobby shop to get some in.
Guys the car is still in the development stage, when it's ready I'm sure you'll hear about it.
duck03 01-02-2006, 11:59 PM Guys the car is still in the development stage, when it's ready I'm sure you'll hear about it.
Yea! Craig (hope this is you)
When this car hits the floor for resale we will spread the word.
I just could'n't wait to tell someone. I got to drive this car and man I liked it.
Donnie,
I wasn't sure yall wanted to let the cat out of the bag just quite yet but I guess it didn't matter,I really do hope this deal works out it will be a really good thing for oval.
ovalbackmarker 01-04-2006, 04:24 PM I wish Trinity would bring their Street Spec car back out. This was almost ready to run. you could buy this car with a motor, battery, and body new for $120.00.It was some of the closest racing we ever had. This car would be awesome with 3300 stick packs and brushless motors. Fast, close, cheap racing again.Sweet!
Raceman 01-06-2006, 03:10 PM The way it goes it's ONE company that would bring a simple pan car with suggested radio-charger-discharger-electronics combos. Much like Bolink has done for years.
By the time you'd upgrade the car you could've bought a good high-quality pan car. Same rules as Legends and Street Spec but just with a newer chassis model. In other words: never mess with good old K.I.S.S. principles.

Tim Mc 01-06-2006, 09:32 PM The best thing about the Legends was that it apealed to all skill levels of r/c racing.... from rookie to old pro. If it were brought back, even now it would still be a popular. It might even save oval racing? It sure couldn't hurt it.
Legends is done for, personaly I think the mini coopers should be the next legends class.
Tim Mc 01-06-2006, 10:37 PM The cooper is a neat little car. The Tamiya build might be a little complicated for a newbie?
Tim Mc 01-06-2006, 11:04 PM Hmm, you maybe right. Most of the Tamiya cars are not.
Robertw321 01-07-2006, 10:24 AM The cooper is a neat little car. The Tamiya build might be a little complicated for a newbie?
A Cooper is no more difficult to build than a pan car and Tamiya's instructions are outstanding.
Craig 01-09-2006, 12:51 PM The Cooper comes in both forms, RTR (or called "expert built") or in kit form. A very easy build, not a lot of parts. Anyone who can read and follow directions can build it.
Kenwood 01-09-2006, 01:09 PM The only issue as I see it with the RTR car is that Inevitably you would disassemble it out of the box and hop it up to be competitive>>>and the body has all kinds of plastic stuff like mirrors etc glued to it that would end up on the track...
We had a pretty good turnout for coopers>>>although it was only on road course... I dont believe there has been a mini cooper oval race yet..
My only dislike from the class was/is that yes the car kit is under $100 BUT>>> by the time you put bearings in it$20 > Ball Diff ($38), Universals $40, TRF Shocks$65 Spings for trf shocks$10, etc etc etc the car becomes quite expensive.. And after about 2 races youll be popping for the aluminum uprights and steering blocks because 1 hit and those are toast...But from a racing standpoint I really enjoyed running the car.. But like I said...its not as cheap as it appears to be to run on a competitive level...UNLESS you made the rule that you can only use what comes in the kit>>>We ran by TCS rules which basically means you can hop it up with ANY TAMIYA parts you want..
I'm pretty sure we have box stock rules at our track, which imop is the way it should be.
Kenwood 01-09-2006, 01:36 PM I agree too but i think our track ran TCS rules because we host the TCS series... so at some point you had to allow hop ups..
We had this argument at our track also,I think it's just a way for Tamiya to sell parts,$$$$$$ as always.
Kenwood 01-09-2006, 02:15 PM No doubt.. IF you look at what all it takes to host the race thats EXACTLY what it is..
We got so sick and tired of replacing front ends that we had a guy make a mold of the front arms WITHOUT the lightening pockets in them.. I ran those at all NON TCS events just to save $$$$$,.. if you run the alum stuff then when you hit the wall the plastic its bolted too breaks...So our home molds were the best of both...
