View Full Version : Race With The Devil
NUM11BLADE 12-30-2005, 10:56 AM Man I had forgotten all about this movie. And it was all the rage among me and my friends in the 70s.
It had been on TV a few times through the years but I had not seen it in awhile.
I thought it to be pretty darn scary when I was young.
Anybody remember it?

Brent Gair 12-30-2005, 11:37 AM Great little film. The movie came out on a nice DVD from Anchor Bay this summer. The disc has a very good anamorphic transfer plus some first class extras. Definitely a recommended buy.
python 12-30-2005, 02:00 PM A definite favorite. I remember me being verrrry creeped out by this one back in the 70's. I haven't seen it in years, so I don't know how well it has held up.
Is it still available out there somewhere?

Am I posting with invisible ink? :)
python 12-30-2005, 03:42 PM It's just plain old senility....that and old age.
PhilipMarlowe 12-30-2005, 05:02 PM The movie it was ofthen paired with on the ol' Drive-inn circuit, Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry, is a better-than-you'd-expect-for-the-budget DVD as well.
That's where I first saw both of them and Vanishing Point waaaaay back when.
Zorro 12-30-2005, 05:06 PM Never seen it but any movie with both Warren Oates and R.G. Armstrong can't be bad! I see that Armstrong is a Sheriff rather than a crazy preacher this time out.
NUM11BLADE 12-30-2005, 08:40 PM Give it a try Zorro, it's not bad.
I think I might just pick it up.

I liked Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry too. It was just on the Speed Channel a couple weeks back.
trevanian 12-31-2005, 02:15 AM Great news, got to get it. Now if only REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER and PRAY FOR THE WILDCATS would get onto DVD, the early to mid 70s would be all caught up for me.
Andrew Gorman 12-31-2005, 02:39 AM Pray for the Wildcats IS available on a homebrew DVD:

I bought their Sole Suvivor DVD and enjoyed it- where else are you going to find it? VHS off the air quality, but at least it's there. Much better quality than the Men Into Space episodes I've been finding lately.

Zorro 12-31-2005, 08:19 PM Got a three month subscription to Netflix as a Christmas gift. Just put Race With The Devil at the top of the queue.

Well, we've got MOVIE MADNESS up here, so I can rent it on VHS whenever I want it, so buying a homebrew isn't a big priority just yet.
Though now that I'm thinking about it, there's a tv movie -- it looks like a tv movie anyway -- with Baseheart and Shatner and Vince Edwards from 69 or so, dealing with bomber crew ghosts that I'd buy in any format, just to see it all the way through.
The-Nightsky 12-31-2005, 08:39 PM Is that " Sole Survivor", about the lady be good?
AFILMDUDE 12-31-2005, 09:31 PM I remember really enjoying Race With the Devil back in my high school years.
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry was a lot of fun as well and holds up pretty well. Great stunts! Although it is a little wierd seeing Vick Marrow chasing after them in a helicopter! Several low angle shots looking up at him with the blades juxtaposed directly over his head. Creepy!
NUM11BLADE 01-01-2006, 09:30 AM Yeah the Vic Morrow thing was a very sad deal. They say he had a fear of helicopters!
I know some people can't get into Combat but I enjoy watching it. Some of the shows are really well done and hey, I watched it as kid. And seeing the guest stars is fun too.
Zorro 01-07-2006, 02:03 PM Watched "Race With The Devil" last night. Fun movie. Simple premise but well executed. Warren Oates was wearing the same shades he wore in "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia".
NUM11BLADE 01-08-2006, 07:42 AM I haven't seen it in years but remember the part where they witness the murder and the satanic guy spots them watching. And then they start to run.

It's an interesting movie. It obviously didn't cost a lot to make and it has a certain 70s "TV Movie" feel to it - especially the music. But the direction of the stunt work is very good - there's one sequence where the Satanists do a rolling ambush of The Winnebego that I'll bet good money was a template for George Miller when he filmed the attack on the gasoline tanker in "The Road Warrior" several years later. And like I say, Warren Oates was just a great actor. His performance kicks this movie up by several notches.
