Ernie P. 12-07-2005, 11:29 PM The ARCOR State Race is this weekend. We'll be open Friday for practice; and its starting to look like a really good turnout. Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 12-09-2005, 01:33 AM Okay, boys and girls. Time to GO! See you for practice today! Thanks; Ernie P.
Jesse Bean 12-09-2005, 10:03 AM I'll see you there.
Ernie P. 12-13-2005, 08:30 PM Okay, say you're Steve Downs. You set a new track record two weeks before the big race. You set not one, but two, new lap records in one evening, the week before the big race. So, what do you do for an encore?
Well, if you're Steve "Dominator" Downs, the answer is obvious. You show up on the night of the big race; break your own track record the first time out; and then proceed to break that new record the next time out; and then break it yet again. All the while dusting off a very fast crowd of very fast racers; all of whom want a piece of your bumper. I think it was "bumper" they said, it was pretty noisy.
Mother Nature dropped enough snow, ice and cold on Virginia to produce a disappointing turnout for the ARCOR State Race at Thunder Road RC Speedway on December 10th. All of the out-of-staters came from the hardier climes North of Virginia. To them a couple of inches of snow probably just made the drive to Gordonsville a bit more scenic. But none of those further South than the North Carolina border, made the trip. They were missed; but it certainly didn't hurt the racing action.
Although the Dominator was never headed in a night of furious racing action, he was also never very far in front of a snarling pack of Stock Class Racers; all of whom were pushing and shoving to get a crack at the Grey number 8. In the end, less than three seconds separated the first three cars in the Stock A Main. Bill Auchterlonie and Doug Parisano came ready to race; but were just a tick slower. No bobbles, no mistakes; Steve Downs was simply a tiny hair faster. For most of the night, it was like watching a freight train storm 'round Thunder Road's huge new carpet.
The B Main produced a win from a name that has been missing from the winner's circle lately. But McLin the elder had to do the wrenching, and leave the driving to his son, Steve Vaughan. Steve stuck it to a scrappy bunch of drivers, to garner his first win in a long time. Actually, Vaughan the elder looked pretty good doing the wrenching thing. A trend maybe?
In Spec Nastruck, Jesse Bean turned an otherwise exciting night of racing into a yawner. Jesse dominated all night; and no one else, including your highly esteemed author, ever got a look at the lead. Most of the time it was a replay of things in the Stock Class, a slow steady drawing away of the lead car; except that Jesse was lapping the field often enough it was getting embarrassing. Charlie and I rubbed on each other a few times; but then he would get tired of it, and would simply check out on me.
Few racers have ever worked harder than Steve Downs worked for this one. In the end, it produced a truly masterful performance; one that brought repeated applause from an appreciative crowd of racer onlookers; who knew exactly what it took to produce the dominant performance they witnessed. Good job, Steve.
Thanks to all who attended; and we hope to see you back for the JACO/SMC Snowflake Classis Oval Race in January. That race will be *huge*. Thanks; Ernie P.

Ernie P. 12-16-2005, 07:18 PM Just a reminder that we're running the Road Course at Thunder Road on Saturday. We have a great Road Course; and hope you will join us for a great day of racing.
We'll be closing down for the Christmas Holidays; and our next Oval Race will be New Year's Day. This will be the last day of racing before the big JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classic on January 7th. If you want to do well at the Snowflake, I'd suggest you get in some practice; because the locals are looking pretty stout! Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 12-21-2005, 05:09 AM Thunder Road is now closed for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Our next race will be an oval race on New Year's Day; as a warmup for the JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classic race on January 7th. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Thunder Road. Thanks; Ernie P.

Harold R 12-21-2005, 11:30 PM Voltage not trying to start anything here but I have been racing with Steve for a few years now and I have never seen Steve take anyone out! He's stand up guy as far as I am concerned.
You are right about one thing though there were a lot of us working hard to catch him! He just had us all covered on that evening.
Why don't you come up to TR and have some fun with us? The more cars the better fun...
Larry B 12-22-2005, 12:52 AM Voltage, if you are going to make that type of post be a man and sign your name. I have known Steve almost since he started racing and watched him work hard to be where he is. Sh$$ happens in any race and I bet that the same ones you claim he moved, would have done the same. Also Steve will try to help anyone. Even a no driving, blind old man like me who can be very grumpy at times.
Harold your right. Some of the regulars are working hard also and doing a good job. Keep it up.
I just hope that Voltage is someone we know and was just trying to have fun.
voltage 12-22-2005, 08:54 AM im not saying STEVE is not a hard worker i just think ERNIE made him sound like a god of rc or something im just saying that there were people there that ran the same amount of laps as him and that was there first time there.
Todd Hochney 12-22-2005, 11:34 AM I saw on the Thunderroad Forums that doors will open at 10 on the 1st with racing starting at 3. Is this correct?

Voltage you have mail
Ernie P. 01-02-2006, 10:37 AM Big news from the 1/1/06 race at Thunder Road! Steve Downs did *NOT* set a new record! He did, however, jump into the lead on the first corner of each race, was never seriously challenged, and stroked to easy victories in all three heats and the A Main.
What was perhaps more interesting was going on behind him. Clayton Anderson, Big Clay, arrived late (Doesn't that make him right on time?); missed the first heat; dropped out of the second heat very early with an evil-handling car; but bounced back in the third heat, running strongly. Then, in the A Main, Big Clay ran a very strong second.
Lin Vaughan wound up third in the A Main, but had a night long fight with an ever-improving Kevin Colburn; who gave Lin fits all night long. Kevin often headed Lin in the heat races, and gave him a hard fight in the Main, running in front of Lin during much of the race. Kevin Morris, Greg and Jimmy Zirk had various handling problems, and trailed at the wire.
In Spec, it was a back and forth battle all night long. John Foster was nowhere in the first heat; better in the second and had it worked out in the third. He tweaked on his car all night long, improving each run; and ran a strong race in the Spec A Main; finishing in front of a strong running Kevin Colburn. Charlie won the first heat; but couldn't match the improvements made by John and Kevin through the evening; and wound up third. Kevin Morris trailed in fourth.
Apologies from the track owner for the dishevelment caused by the heating system installation. The only thing remaining is for the electrician to wire in the thermostats; and we'll be all warm and toasty. The installers have promised to have the scaffolding torn down and removed before Friday; and we should be ready to go.
We're looking for a barn burner of a race next weekend; and hope to see you all there. The JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classic is going to be FAST. Maybe some one can actually get a look at the front end of Steve Down's car!? Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 01-05-2006, 05:20 AM Just two days until the JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classic at Thunder Road RC Speedway. $1,000.00 in merchandice awards, a fast, smooth, flat carpet oval track, and fast company. Details at thunderroadrc.com. Thanks; Ernie P.
Go4iT 01-05-2006, 08:18 AM Ernie,
Tell the folks out there how much the entry fees are for this race and what your 'big ticket' items will be; batteries, chassis, motors, Elvis sandwiches
Ernie P. 01-05-2006, 08:12 PM Hmmm.... You mean like the entry fee is only $30.00 for the first Class, $20.00 for the second? And how the $1,000.00 in merchandise awards can be used to buy SMC batteries; power supplies; KSG, Associated and Silva Chassis kits; things like that? Or should I just mention the new radiant heating system? THAT'S the biggest ticket item. <g>
The JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classsic will be run Saturday, January 7th. Thunder Road will be open at 10:00 on Friday, for those needing setups, or simply trying to go faster. Looking at the competition lined up, going faster may be a really good idea.
If a big, fast, smooth and flat carpet oval track, fast company and $1,000.00 in merchandise prizes trips your trigger, head for Thunder Road RC Speedway in Gordonsville, Virginia. Directions and details can be found on our website at thunderroadrc.com.
The doors will open at 9:00 AM Saturday, and racing begins at 3:00. Thanks; Ernie P.
Jesse Bean 01-05-2006, 10:21 PM C-ya there

Ernie P. 01-06-2006, 09:06 AM Thats right, Harold; the heat is on. And with the racers already lined up, the racing will be HOT! $1,000.00 in merchandise awards, a fast track and faster drivers! The JACO/SMC Snowflake Oval Classic race will be a shaker. Thanks; Ernie P.
Go4iT 01-06-2006, 06:43 PM Good job w/the heat conversion, I'll be sure to come early to secure a pit spot by the heater! See ya then...

Go4iT 01-07-2006, 07:34 AM We'll be open at 10:00 on the 1st; racing at 3:00 PM. On the 7th, we'll open at 9:00; and close whenever. If necessary, the mains will be run on the 8th. And, we'll be open for practice, starting at 10:00, on the 6th. Thanks; Ernie P.
Just hope that both door locks are not engaged this time; remember to bring your crowbar, I'll bring TWO screw drivers this time!
Ernie P. 01-22-2006, 01:15 PM After a couple of weeks playing with the Road Course (See a complete report on the JACO/SMC Snowflake Road Course Classic below), we'll be back to the oval course on January 28th. This will be a weekly race; but running on our Snowbirds-like oval is *always* fun. If you're planning on running the Snowbirds, this will probably be your last chance to practice on a comparable carpet oval, before the event. Come join us for a day of oval racing! Thanks; Ernie P.
-----------JACO/SMC Snowflake Road Course Classic Race Report-------
For those who didn't make it, you missed a great night of racing. For those who were there, I want to thank each and every one of you personally. It's been a long time since I've seen a group of racers having such a good time. Every one of you contributed to a great night of racing. There were no Prima Donna attitudes, no bad tempers, no problems of any kind; just a bunch of nice guys having a good time, joking and kidding around and, incidentally, trying to beat each other's brains out on the track. You're all a credit to the sport; and you're all welcome back, any time, to Thunder Road.
We ran 1:10 Scale Touring Cars; Stock and 19-turn. Several drivers wanted to run 1:12 Scale 19-turn Sports cars, as well; but decided to fill out the thin ranks of Touring Cars instead.
The highlight of the qualifying races had to be round three; between Anthony Saunders and Tony Stewart. We were using IFMAR staggered starts; and for five minutes whichever driver was at the end of a straight piece of carpet was in the lead, usually by less than .1 of a second. There was nothing unusual about watching the timer switch the current leader back and forth several times in a single lap; and the issue wasn't decided until the horn. At the line, Anthony nipped Tony by .01 of a second! What a race!!!
John Tag took top TQ in Stock Class with a 33/5:01.16; a new record. Paul Lemieux took top TQ in 19-turn with a blistering 36/5:06.29.
In the Stock Class A Main, bedlam reigned for the first couple of laps, as the racers jossled aggressively for position. John Tag got into an early shunt and Mark Unrath grabbed the lead. Lap after lap, John closed back in; but after five minutes Mark still had a little less than two seconds in hand, to claim top honors. Arvin Nano was only a bit slower; easing into third. Jeff Parfitt, Charlie Johnson, and Thomas Keiser trailed the leaders home; as John Pritchett and Bryan Frymeyer watched from the sidelines, victims of early shunts.
In the 19-turn A Main, Paul Lemieux followed up his TQ honors with a breathtaking run; erasing his own race record with an astonishing 37/5:07.82 in heavy traffic! Mark Unrath proved his Stock Class win wasn't a fluke; by hauling in second place in 19-turn. Local racer Jesse Bean and Tony Stewart fought each other hard, never far apart; until Tony slipped coming out of the esses; letting Jesse dart past on the inside. That was all the break Jesse needed to claim third place as Tony followed closely in fourth. Bryan Frymyer finally got a clean run; taking fifth from John Pritchett. Anthony Saunders was victim of a first lap shunt; and couldn't follow up on his excellent runs in the heat races.
A win in Stock and a second in 19-turn handed Mark Unrath the lion's share of the $1,000.00 purse. The poor fellow had trouble figuring out how to spend it all!
Rob Cutman of Customworks and Jack of "JACO" added to the fun and special atmosphere of the event. It was great seeing and chatting with the two of you; and your presence added to the fun for all of us. Special thanks to Lin Vaughan (McLin), who worked his magic on the computer, calling the race all night long; and Betty, who again spoiled us all with her home style cooking. And, of course, special thanks to Jack and Danny, for their sponsorship; and Bryan, who translated that sponsorship into action.
One final note: Prior to this, Tony Stewart had never run on a road course; but he turned in an excellent performance against some very stiff competition. Keep your eye on this guy; I think he has a future in the racing business! Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 01-24-2006, 05:08 AM After playing with the road course cars the last couple of races, Thunder Road switches back to the oval for this weekend. The next big race is the Birthday Bash on the oval track; February 4th. $500.00 in merchandise awards; and some tough competition. Don't miss it! Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 01-30-2006, 10:30 PM Last chance to race on a Snowbirds size oval track before the 'Birds. Thunder Road RC Speedway will be running 1:10 Spec, Stock and 19-turn on Saturday. $500.00 in merchandise awards, a smooth, fast oval, and some great competition. What more could you want? Details, directions and more at thunderroadrc.com. See you Saturday. Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 02-03-2006, 05:06 AM And tomorrow, we run the Birthday Bash! Spec, Stock and 19-Turn on a fast and smooth Snowbirds sized oval. We've had lots of inquiries from out of state racers, who want to run a large oval before heading South. We hope to see you there. Details, directions and more at thunderroadrc.com. Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 02-03-2006, 08:56 PM Sorry; we haven't had enough interest in brushless to set up a class. Maybe some day, but not today. Come on down anyhow; it's looking like a good crowd. If you need something, call. Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 02-05-2006, 01:22 PM Thunder Road RC Speedway celebrated nine years of life; and the owner, Ernie Padgette celebrated approximately a half century more; on February 4th, with the running of the annual Birthday Bash. A good field of racers turned out; including some faces not seen in a few years.
Thunder Road thanks McAllister, JACO and SMC for the door prizes; which were well received by the racers in attendance. Your support is, as always, appreciated. A special note: One volunteer turn marshal, who filled in as needed all night, received a McAllister ’06 Monte Carlo body for his display of sportsmanship. That kind of effort is always appreciated; and should be rewarded.
After the customary three heats, which featured some pretty good racing in their own right, the racers took to the track for the Mains. Lin Vaughan continued his night-long domination of the 19-turn Class with an A Main win; but Harold Ruckle managed to jump McLin right at the start. Harold had been doing some tweaking on his car all night long, and it showed; as McLin had to chase hard for half the race, just to get in a position to challenge. After several failed attempts, McLin managed to duck inside Harold going into turn one. He completed the pass as the cars exited two; but Harold came with a whisker of returning the favor as the cars rocketed into turn three. There was a brief bobble as the cars touched, but both drivers kept their mounts pointed straight and McLin held on as the cars ripped down the main straight. Harold stayed right on McLin’s bumper for several laps; even making a stab at a pass a couple of times. A gentle brush with the outside wall eventually dropped Harold a second back; and, with the immediate pressure off, McLin was able to go back to his racing line without worrying about defending his line against a sudden pass. After that, McLin started stretching his lead. A tenth of a second here and there; and suddenly the challenge was over. McLin won by nearly a lap over Harold, setting a 19-turn record 57 laps in the process; as Steve Herndon trailed in third place.
Steve Herndon got his revenge in the Spec Class; cruising to an easy victory over second finisher Robbie Bingler. Robbie had looked strong in the heats, as had Steve Walker; but the A Main was all Herndon’s. The best racing of the night was between third place finisher Steve Walker and Charlie Johnson. The two were so close at the line that it wasn’t until the computer printout came out, that we knew Steve and beaten Charlie.
Stock Class belonged to Clayton Anderson all night long. In every heat, Harold Ruckle took advantage of the torque of his EA motor to jump into a quick lead. Clayton would gradually pull in on Harold; and (sometimes with the aid of the chrome horn) slip by, going into turn one or three. After that, Clayton would gently ease away. The A Main followed the same scenario; and, once past Harold, Clayton cruised to an easy win. John Birmele seemed to take a minute or so to get into sync with the track; but ran strong after that; earning a solid third place over Tim Thoner.
Special note should be taken of the Stock B Main. Jimmy Zirk had bested Jeff Duck in all three heats. But, when the B Main was run, Jimmy got tangled with another car on the second lap. That put him a half lap back right at the outset; and Jeff ran and hid. Jimmy chased hard, right to the finish; but Jeff Duck walked away with the B Main win; and his ear to ear grin said it all.
Novice Class was interesting; but rumor has it that some old fart was dropped in as a ringer; just to make up the numbers. Modesty forbids further discussion of the results. Suffice it to say that the racing was… interesting; and the wall to wall (literally) on track action sufficient to keep the turn marshals and spectators alternately wincing and laughing.
Two second place finishes were sufficient to give Harold Ruckle a big start toward funding his upcoming Snowbirds trip; and Lin Vaughan and Steve Herndon picked up a good bit of change as well, from the $500.00 in race awards. A good night of racing; some old faces making a reappearance; and some good, close racing. What else is needed for a great night of RC action? Come join us at Thunder Road RC Speedway; and you’ll see what we mean.
Next week: Road Course. Thanks; Ernie P.
BigClay 02-16-2006, 01:07 AM Whos plannng is planning on racing this weekend?

Ernie P. 02-22-2006, 12:11 PM Here is the schedule of oval and road course racing at Thunder Road through the end of March. We look forward to seeing you at Thunder Road, no matter which way you turn. Thanks; Ernie P.
February 25: Oval
February 26: Road Course (Sunday)
March 4th: Oval
March 11th: ARCOR Race for the Green (Oval)
March 18th: Road Course
March 25th: Oval
March 26th: Road Course (Sunday)
Ernie P. 02-24-2006, 04:57 AM We're running oval on Saturday, and the road course on Sunday, at Thunder Road this weekend. Come join us for your favorite form of RC racing. Better yet, race with us both days! Thanks; Ernie P.
Ernie P. 02-27-2006, 08:47 PM Splitting the Oval racing and Road Course action between Saturday and Sunday definitely split the available racer pool as well; but we picked up some new road course racers and had a lot of walk in interest as well. Both programs are growing; and both will have a place in Thunder Road's future.
The oval action on Saturday featured Spec, Stock and 19-Turn modifieds. In teh Spec Class, Robbie Bingler easily won every heat; but Jesse Bean worked all evenng, looking for the handle on his NasTruck entry. When the time came for the Main, Jesse was all over the back of Robbie's truck for lap after lap. Jesse finally slipped past with a slight rub, coming out of turn two and was never headed again. The slight slip was all it took to drop Robbie to the rear of the tightly bunched field, and he was never able to again challenge for the lead. Steve Walker had run strongly in the heats, but dropped from the Main on the 21st lap. The rest of the field stayed tightly bunched until the end; as Jesse Bean lead Steve Herndon, John Foster and Robbie Bingler to the line. At the end, less than four seconds separated first from fourth.
In the Novice Class, an improving Mike Ruckle gave your's truly a run; beating me in every heat. The Main was a different story, as I got a jump at the start and managed to stay in front.
Harold Ruckle was uncharacteristically nowhere in the Stock heats; but got things sorted for the Main. Harold bested Jeff Duck, Dennis Strauss and a non-starting Buddy Hartmann, in an easy win. Jeff Duck had looked very strong in the heats; but seemed to lose the handle in the Main.
Harold Ruckle had also looked lost in the 19-Turn Class heats, letting Lin Vaughn dominate the action. Steve Herndon battled an evil handling car all evening; and seemed to find a bit of his lost package toward the end of the third heat. His car seemed to take a few laps to settle down, before he could run strongly. But, when the Main came along teh situation reversed quickly. Harold jumped into the lead, with Lin running close behind. After nine laps, the battle for the front position was settled, as Lin Vaughn headed to the pits with a broken car. Steve Herndon's car looked stronger with each passing lap, and he was running excellent times at the end; but he was never able to make up for the time lost in the first few laps.
The Road Course action on Sunday was a simple pattern. Jesse Bean had his brand new X-Ray T2 running on rails; and set a blisterng pace all night long. Jesse ran very near the existing record; but was never able to gain the very few seconds he needed to put his name on the board. Jesse easily dominated the field; and was followed home by Charlie Johnson, Clint Withrow and Ben Storrs.
The Novice Class was... interesting. I easily won the first two heats; got taken out in the third; and promptly took myself out in the main. Westley Love also crashed out; leaving Matt Glenn to collect his first win.
Several spectators stopped by to observe the road course action; and we hope to have some new competition very soon. Thanks; Ernie P.
Harold R 02-27-2006, 10:58 PM Great time at TR this weekend!
I could get use to this 19t stuff. Once got closer on the roll out that EA 19t ripped! And the Pro3 had no problem holding on to it!
I'm sure Lin is home working hard as I'm typing to get his track record back this weekend. Should be fun!
Don't forget the ARCOR Race is coming up in only two weeks!
Hope to see a big crowd at TR this weekend!
Ernie P. 03-01-2006, 07:53 PM With the big race coming up on February 11th, I think the action this weekend will be interesting. I'm planning on spending some time getting my stuff back together. If you're thinking of joining us, check out the website at thunderroadrc.com. Thanks; Ernie P.
