View Full Version : I'd like the answer to a very specific question.
LUKE'57 11-16-2005, 07:28 PM I know that most everyone thinks that the "Sky Captains" movie was pretty much dreck but I have the opportunity to buy it for about $8.50 and want some information. I like movies with airplanes and p-40's are one of my favorite. I have seen and liked a lot of movies because of the special effects overshadowing a poor plot or weak story. Do you think I would enjoy this movie and especially the "how it was done" extras on the second disc enough to make up for what I've heard is a throwaway story? Looking for more than a "that movie sucked" type of comments. Thanks for taking the time to help me.
The-Nightsky 11-16-2005, 08:16 PM Its Cheesy! I liked it though......nice atmosphere to it kind of reminds you of those old serials from the 30's....The p-40 is kinda cool......does a lot of stuff regular P-40s couldnt....I think you'll like it.
Second disc? I got it when it first came out and it only has one disc
Babaganoosh 11-16-2005, 08:50 PM Sorry, Luke. The only one qualified enough to tell you that a movie was good or if it sucked is you.
I've really stopped listening to the critics like Ebert and Roper to help me determine which movies to stay away from. I'll see the movie and make up my own mind. If you rent SC/WOT and you like it, by all means, buy it and check out the additional features.
X15-A2 11-16-2005, 08:55 PM Hey, I thought the movie was not so great BUT, the "behind the scenes" material (nearly two hours!) was really interesting. I thought the extras alone were well worth the $8 I paid for my copy. Just my opinion, for what it is worth.
PhilipMarlowe 11-16-2005, 09:05 PM I'd say pay the $8.50, it's definately worth a look. The planes, gizmos, and eye candy are a lot of fun, and I personally thought Jude Law and Gweneth Paltrow were well cast and did a good job. OK, the plot wasn't the most original, and had holes big enough to drive a truck thru, but it's still a better-than-average popcorn flick imho. And the extras are interesting too!
Carson Dyle 11-16-2005, 09:09 PM The story behind the film is actually more interesting than the film itself IMO. I didn't particularly like "Sky Captain", but after watching the "making of" documentary it's hard not to like Kerry Conran. Very inspiring stuff.
Lloyd Collins 11-16-2005, 09:10 PM I found the movie to be a good fun movie to watch. I really like it. It is a 30's style, with that old time futurist look to it. This is the kind of movie to turn your adult off, and turn on you inner child on.
CaptFrank 11-16-2005, 09:57 PM I thought the movie was good.
I do like the "serial" feel to it.
My favorite thing is the floating truck they use near the end.
(Oops! I hope I didn't give anything away!) I think it would
be a great pick-up truck design. Just put wheels on it, and
it would be a sleek flatbed from Ford for only $13,995!
Factory incentives apply!!
Zorro 11-16-2005, 10:10 PM I was extremely impressed by the technical artistry behind the film, but that's about all there is to the movie. For $8.50 though, you can't hardly go wrong. Wouldn't mind seeing the "making of" myself. Of course, if what you want is technical artistry with heart - King Kong hits the shelves next week.
jheilman 11-17-2005, 12:28 AM Yeah, this film was all style and nostalgia and not much else. I was disappointed in it. It looks realy good.
John P 11-17-2005, 08:52 AM I had a ball with this film. Yeah, it was mostly an experimental effects film with slim plot, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
It's a very good simulated 1940s sci fi serial, with elements borrowed from the Fleischer Superman cartoons and various comic strips of the time. There are a lot of "Oh, come ON" moments, but that's half the fun.
Hey, P-40s, flapping metal robot fighters, and giant robots tromping thru NYC! How can ya not like it!? :)
Martin Dressler 11-17-2005, 11:15 AM I wasn't sure what to make of "Sky Captain" when I first saw it. I guess I'm still not sure what to make of it as a motion picture, but after watching the Making Of doc it's certainly easier to appreciate as a personal accomplishment for Kerry Conran. As someone else pointed out, the story of Conran's obsession to get his vision on screen is far more compelling than the vision itself.
LUKE'57 11-17-2005, 09:42 PM Thanks everybody for taking the time to help me. I saw a few of the old serials (and both King Kong and Gone with the Wind for the first time) at a theatre in town that showed the old films in the late fifties and early sixties and I enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere of them. Thanks again for the input, I think it'll follow me home tomorrow. And Zorro, there's already a "no questions asked, don't need to check it out, just buy it and take it home" place on the shelf for King Kong that has been reserved ever since the "ultimate edition" was annnounced. Gotta get that one!
sbaxter 11-18-2005, 11:03 AM Hey, P-40s, flapping metal robot fighters, and giant robots tromping thru NYC! How can ya not like it!? :)All that and an elephant roughly the size of a domestic cat -- how cool would it be to have one of those as a pet? :D

Wouldn't that mean we would need tiny nuclear submarines...and tiny Iranians? :freak:
John P 11-19-2005, 09:32 AM And teeny weeny cans of Billy Beer!
and a place on the roof of the White House where they could smoke...uh....
LUKE'57 11-19-2005, 11:30 AM Thanks for all the input ya'll but I'm about halfway through the movie and all I can think of is that if I had known about the Memorial Day war movie special thay had at Wallyworld back in May before they sent them all back (very short 1 week promotion that I missed) I could have gotten Robert Mitchum in The Hunters for the same money. Comparing F-86's to P-40's.....it's a tossup.......Comparing ol' Mitch to that whole crowd of newbies........no comment! LOL Also missed Sink the Bismark and Enemy Below in the same deal. Now they want half again more for them and you have to pay shipping. Oh well, ya snooze ya lose.

LUKE'57 11-19-2005, 06:43 PM ?????????????????
John P 11-19-2005, 07:23 PM I got The Hunters. I'd forgotten what a great movie it was, and such fantastic aerial scenes!
Richard Compton 11-20-2005, 04:58 AM Where can one get Sky Captain for $8.50? Is it still available?
LUKE'57 11-20-2005, 07:45 PM Got mine at Blockbuster in the 3 for $25 for used movie sale. Got it with Flight of the Pheonix (great aerial effects and Dennis Quaid) and the new Italian Job (extras so far look great, bodes well for the movie)
