View Full Version : More TNS BSG RTF Image Analysis - Jupiter 2?!?
Griffworks 11-04-2005, 05:30 PM So, was going thru my Season One DVD set looking for images of ships in the RTF and what should I find but a ship that looks like a slightly scaled down version of a Blockade Runner from Star Wars (only has 8 engines instead of 11) and....
The Jupiter 2 from "Lost In Space"!
Whattaya think?

EDIT: For those who hadn't seen it, I had found an image of the TOS U.S.S. Enterprise as seen in the TNS BSG Miniseries and posted a thread about it over at the "Science Fiction and Star Trek Modeling" forum in this thread:
TOS 1701 Part of TNS RagTag Fleet (http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=126562) That find prompted me to dig even further in to what's out there in the RTF, thus the above. :)
PhilipMarlowe 11-04-2005, 06:00 PM The ship in the upper left corner looks suspiciously like the Cloud City air cars from Empire Strikes Back.
Griffworks 11-04-2005, 06:41 PM That's what I thought at first, as well. However, I don't think so, as the shape isn't quite there.
Babaganoosh 11-04-2005, 06:47 PM psst, they're both the same image.
Griffworks 11-04-2005, 07:03 PM D'Oh! :o
Fixed it.....
El Gato 11-04-2005, 07:19 PM The ship in the upper right looks like a multi-engined Apollo module. Fitting since that scene has Apollo relunctantly following orders.
The ship you have labelled as a Jupiter-2 also sort of looks like a TNG shuttle in profile. I suspect you're more correct (by a lot) though.

Griffworks 11-04-2005, 11:36 PM OK Updated the first pic to include some more musings. One of the ships looks sort of like either the Proteus from "Fantastic Voyage" or possibly the TOS Rising Star. Weird angle. I thought another was possibly Salvage One, but after looking at this website - http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/9782/salvage1.html - I'm changed my mind and don't think so.
Any more guesses...?

Yeah, but it's the Jupiter 2 from the movie.
:D

It's the TOS Rising Star. Good eye, Jeff. I'm a big fan of that particular design, and I'm pleased to see she's found her way into the new series.
Griffworks 11-07-2005, 04:51 PM Yeah, Lee Stringer, who did the VFX for Zoic Studios for the Miniseries and most of Season One's episodes, told me that the Rising Star is there in the RTF. According to him, she's not a well-detailed CGI model, but she does exist. He figured that if an episode required the appearance of the Rising Star someone would make it.
Thank for the confirmation, regardless.
I wasn't real sure, due to the angle and "distance from the viewer" perspective. Trying to figure what's going on in someone elses head - someone you at least know is really in to classic SF ships/vehicles - is never an easy game and I felt that the Proteus (from "Fantastic Voyage", for those who don't know what I'm on about) was about the only classic SF ship that might be an alternative to the Rising Star.

Heh... You funny guy!
Actually, I could almost see that one thrown in there, too.

The Rising Star is my all-time favorite media-related spaceship; the Proteus is my all-time favorite media-related submarine. I've always sensed a certain similarity between the two but had never heard anyone voice a similar opinion until today.
Coincidentally, I just yesterday was at the home of a fan/ collector who's stayed in touch with a number of the old Universal Hartland guys. He owns a number of "Galactica" miniatures, including a direct pull of the Rising Star. He allowed me to take a number of pix, but I had to promise to keep them to myself for the time being (if the situation changes I will certainly post the images).
Jeff: the aforementioned fan/ collector mentioned seeing TOS Rising Star in the new series on more than one occasion, and from more than one angle. This surprised me, because as an avid fan of the new show I’ve seen every episode at least twice, and I’ve really had my eyes pealed for a glimpse of my fave ship. Alas, with the exception of the image you posted, I haven’t gotten one. Clearly you’ve got sharper eyes (or a bigger screen) than I… have you spotted the R. S. in any other shots?

Great minds in synch? Or truly sad individuals who need a life...? :D

Right on! I never knew anyone had gotten any pulls off the original. Very kewel.

Not yet. However, I've only watched "33" and "Water" thus far w/an eye towards trying to spot ships in there. Lee has said that there are some ships in the mix from "Firefly", specifically the "used spaceship lot" as we get glimpses in "Out Of Gas". So, I'm going to backtrack a bit and try to pull some screencaps from that episode so I can have an idea of what to look for.
Oh, and I've been using my PC at home, which has a 17" LCD flat screen. I wish I had a larger screen I could use, but trying to hook my computer up to the TV in the living room is out of the question, logistically speaking.
More when I've got it!
