View Full Version : WING or NO WING?

ROAR might add more weight to slow the cars down. A heaveir car will also result in more damage. Removing the wing and only using a spoiler would make the racers slow down and also make the cars look more realistic. If the wing was done away with, racers would learn to drive, let up on the throttle and work more on set-up.

I dont think losing the wing will help anyone new.. we all know no wing will take more setup.. Roar want it better for new people// i dont think wing is the answer.

the only class i can see losing the wing is stock.. It is the beginner class right?? But it still wont make the top guys any slower . which means the spread will still be the same..

the best thing we can do for new people is teach them how to set up a car...

Our track has already basically decided not to go with roars 06 rules.. were keeping them the same as they are.. Basically arcor or norrca type rules. We are happy where they are so why change.. these rule changes every few years are sickining.. I would worry about getting people to the track rather then pounding rule changes all th time..

put it in perspective. most of us race 1/10 scale cars. they run about 40 to 50 mph on average. that time 10 is about 400 miles per hour. try that in a real car. what it boils down too is that we dont race real cars.
nobody races rc cars becouse they are replicas of real cars. we race them becouse we enjoy racing them. yah its cool to see them look like real cars. but that not why we race. we race becouse we like to race.

Your poll needs more options such as keep the wing and leave the weight alone as well. Taking away the wing is only going to slow down the bottom half of the racers. The top half will be just as fast, which means you'll have a greater disparity between the "slow" guys and the "fast" guys. This will just lead to more people quitting.

who needs a wing ... i've been running alot this year so far without a wing and its not slow me down i think its helping and the car still weights 41 oz .. last weekend at the pennsylvania state champs race all the cars in the A main had no wings and the top 3 cars broke the old track record ..............

I think each class, that is ROAR sanctioned recognized class, should have it's own set of rules.
Stock class should have it's own weight, which should be the heaviest.
19T class should be heavier than stock.
MOD should be the lightest.

Wings should be stripped from stock class, but left on 19T and MOD.

But none of this matters because tracks will not stand behind an organization. They will continue to make their own rules as they see fit........... You can only beat a dog so long before it gets boring....LOL!

Keep the wing in all classes {optional }and lower the weight . We dont need to go slower. Use the wing as a tuning option .

Leave the weight rules alone, and the wings should stay for all classes!!!!!

I say lose the wing in STOCK, 19T and mod need them

Geez, this idea has been debated for about the last 5 years. Just run what works for your track and racers and forget the Orgs.

I don't see why any change at all is needed. If anything was going to change, I say lower the weight and leave the rest alone. Snowbirds is 39 oz. and leaves some room for creativity in the wing and body dept.

MBEACH2K is right. Longer races, no wings but I'll amend it by adding LAP racing Vs. timed. It's called R/C Latemodel racing and it is coming in a BIG way.

Im in no way a fan of lap racing. if it ever went that way i can say wothout a doubt id be done.. Not because of the point of it, but to me it takes the fun out of it.. yeah its ok for a fun class, but for sanctioned or club racing it will never happen.. Twice the amount of laps turned, twice the wear and tear..

for those who think a wing slows a car down , a wingless car won stock at the snowbirds..( biggest gathering of stock racers anywhere), and the Tq car for the last roar carpet nats was wingless as well.. Not having the wing against that many people and winning just shows there is no disadvantage to not running it.. and i agree it will just move the lower level of racers even further out of the game..

also your poll says lose the wing and lower the weight to 41 ouces... the current weight it 40 oz, and they want to bump it to 41.. for caps it is 42 and the want to make it 43..

for cap tire racing, try and run wingless on the bigger high banked tracks.. you wont make two laps without a spin.. there purpose is needed in some forms and tracks..

Just my two cents...

First, I could be wrong but I think the new weight rules are intended to offset the heavier 3800's. Then again I have not have not scaled my 3300's next to my 3800s to even be sure they are heavier.

Secondly, personally I'm always sitting on the fence about running a wing myself. This year I have been running one most of the time. I was in the A at the Steel city race along with my buddy who was also running one, but it is true that most in the A were not. If I would had more time I may have tried it without.

Third, I keep hearing that some want to slow the cars down. Why???? The faster the better!

Removing the wing is not going to solve anything. Creating a rule that prohibits wings is as foolish as saying let's not run tire compound since to slow the cars down.

Local track competition and conditions will dictate in which classes it's needed. Believe me, if a car can be faster without a wing, somebody is going figure it out and run it that way and the masses will follow. As much as I'd like to see heavier cars (for the design possibilities) I'd just assume that everything stay the same.

Look at it this way, in about 3 or so year we'll all be switching to 6500 mah cells and only running 3 of them. Can't stop progress guys.

Hey Darkside, how about 8000mah 2 cell packs. That what a lot of electric guys around here have moved to coupled with brushless motor setup. They run as fast as the gas trucks and can run 20 minutes easily on a single charge. But that's a whole other topic of discussion.

keep the wing and leave the weight alone!!!!!!! I'll agreee w/Dave on that. I would think that a fixed gear ratio or combo would slow the cars down-if that's what ROAR is going for?

10 minute races are you guys kidding. 30-40 minutes spent corner marshalling per race right and getting out at 4 am don't sound like much fun to me. Plus I am usually only a lap or 2 off the pace now I will be 5-6 laps off the pace. As for the wing it should definetly be allowed so I will blow by them when their car won't turn.

Yeah thats it; add a couple more oz. of useless lead to our already too heavy cars and suddeny every new drivers car will handle perfectly and drive like an expert. Even if it slowed the cars down by 1 tenth per lap the same drivers who are having trouble will STILL have trouble.
I'm convinced ROAR officials make these foolish rule changes on a regular basis to justify thier existance. Why slow the cars down? This is not NASCAR, there are not lives at stake if the cars crash. ROAR should conduct seminars at large events on car setup and driving. There comes a point where the weight puts too much strain on these motors when using 4 cells.
Tire wear would also increase the heavier the cars get.
