View Full Version : Other than carpet, what surface(s) have you raced foams on?
WhirlinGraphics 11-03-2005, 08:16 PM Give me specifics on texture and whether it was indoors or outdoors.
I'll take the most obvious one off the table: Asphalt/Tarmac with a little soda/sugar water sprayed down for traction.

Lafayette Nj? And where about's if it is in nj address? Website?
Thanks

hankster 11-03-2005, 11:22 PM Asphalt with no traction sprayed down. We used to run temp. tracks all the time at places like fairs and swap meets. You use what they give ya, from glass smooth to avoiding the manhole covers (ever try to get 2" of ground clearance on a pan car?). Ya race what you have, it's the same for everyone. After a couple hours of practice the dust is gone and you got traction. But we did use a LOT of Paragon Red Dot traction compound on the tires.
Mr.fastman 11-04-2005, 12:13 AM Asphalt indoors and outdoors without sugar water, just red dot or tire tweak.

WhirlinGraphics 11-04-2005, 01:27 AM Come on, Mr. Moss, you can add more to the discussion than that! Your old, so I know you have raced on several different surfaces. Enlighten us young'ens. :p

What were the challenges of setting up on the 'glass smooth' surface? Wouldn't you have the problem of the tires 'glazing over' after a while?

Craig 11-04-2005, 12:01 PM Foam tires, indoors, on black roofing felt. Setup for a temporary exhibition track. Worked real good.

pmsimkins 11-04-2005, 02:08 PM Outdoor hard tennis court. Very good traction but a bit tough on tires.
hankster 11-04-2005, 02:37 PM "Glass Smooth" pavement still has some texture to it. Once a groove of Red Dot got laid down, it was awesome racing.
Oh yeah, almost forgot Sideways City in Wayland, MI. Thier indoor track has a "non-slip" surface on it... you know the kind they put on steps so you don't slip. You could always count on going through at least one right front every time you raced there! But it sure did have traction!
Slider 11-04-2005, 03:00 PM Red Dirt. outside Oval.keep track packed and damp.

Hey AndyPa, where was that at??
j21moss 11-09-2005, 09:47 PM We use to run on a glass cover hardwood floor back in the early 90's..we used the old Twinn-K's pink and black dot tires and no tire dope..worked like a charm..Whirl::: you think I'm old??? you are right behind me!!
Brad Boling 11-10-2005, 08:18 PM Moss, do you remember Master Hobbies in Castelton at their "new" location? I think it was concrete with some sort of rubberized coating on it. That was back when the black dot foams first came out, circa 1989.
martian 710 11-10-2005, 08:37 PM Years ago we ran yellow foams on a indoor clay oval. We used a dremel tool with a saw blade to groove them. I've got the scar on my palm to prove it. OUCH!!!, 3 stitches. We used paragon for compound.
j21moss 11-10-2005, 10:49 PM Brad.. I believe that was about 91 or 92..and yes it was concrete with a film of asphalt coating with sand in it.. very hard on tires..very long straights and short corners,,very fast!!
Beero 11-10-2005, 11:28 PM When my dad and I first started racing in the late 80's early 90's we raced on roller rinks. that was a blast.
andyPa 11-11-2005, 07:34 PM in the Port Royal, Pa at the race track and on the road behind the track
Raceman 12-24-2005, 09:25 AM OK just to bring it back a few seconds:
For hardwood and roof felt tracks:does it mean guys use softer or harder foam tires? Also which springs front and rear would work best? Thanx.
Raceman.
RCThunder 12-24-2005, 12:12 PM We race on a tennis court here:

We still race on roller rinks out here, except we rollout carpet...lol
I ran a parking lot track that was in a state park, It was sectioned off as a roller hockey rink(never saw anyone use it) It was sealed, we put down sugar water (1/2lb of brown sugar/2gal of water) Ran that first summer everyone raced our cost-controlled class (any chassis, dynamite 1400, 540 sealed mabuchi motor, spec tires, wings were allowed) It was a blast, I won 11 of 12 race there with a woods x-13.
SDL98 12-25-2005, 12:19 PM Ran some tennis courts, They had a race once on a blocked off city street with alot of crown in it. It was uphill going into and downhill off the corners. Then they put coke syrup or something down but the track wasn't real clean. when the race was over my tires had every spec of sand and dust stuck to them couldn't even see the foam
wildman 12-25-2005, 02:04 PM Used to race on banked clay oval east of bradenton fl. foam tire groved pan cars wedge bodies w 7 cells and mod motors it was a blast. mike bolyn might remember higgins old place. Also ran 1/12 scale with foams on it. Those were the days!

GILYHANTREE 12-25-2005, 11:35 PM clay/pee gravel oval mostly pee gravel. banked corners flat straights with buggies on foams in about about 1987 . they looked like todays late models going around the turns boy was that fun
Raceman 06-02-2006, 11:46 PM Recently I did pick my TRC pan car and run it on the driveway made of bricks. Put some sun tan (45 SPF) on pretty old untrued tires with 1600 spec battery and tired monster stock motor. Car was glued to the surface and lots of torque the motor really was screaming. Spur (120) pinion (26) I may go -2 teeth to give it a chance to breathe. Tons of laughing during that 6 minute ride.:D
