Hi Guys. Anyone know who owns the original Gemini 12 4' Filming miniature from the Lost In Space Pilot "No Place To Hide"? I actually like the look and profile Of the original design of the Jupiter Two. I like the larger Viewports , The shallower lower hull, The larger Fusion Core. IT'S also more believeable than the Jupiter Two. There is no pretense of a Lower Deck, LANDING GEAR ETC. As much as I love the Jupiter Two The original version has always held my interest. I was wondering if any Fiberglass Pulls were done of the 4' ship. Jupiter Two's site has some great photos of it , But I was hoping to find more. It looks to have more of an interior than the Jupiter Two prop as well. Regards, Mark

Allegedly it was sold at a 1980 Fox auction to a private collector named Andre Dhant.

I am now not so sure it actually sold at that auction or went unsold and then was purchased after the auction ... my memory gets fuzzier with age :freak:

Since then I have heard no more about this prop - hopefully he still has it. Over the years I have done internet searchs on that name but have never hit upon anything helpful though.

Anyone know what happended to that smaller 12" Gemini XII/Jupiter 2 prop that we see flying in and out of the Derelict ship ??
And where it might be today ??

Mark,
It seems to me, as I look at special effects footage from throughout the run of the series, that miniatures with GXII lower hulls were often used. It also seems to me, that some of the 4 ft. J2 miniatures had shallower lower hulls. And yes, there were some models with the full-depth J2 lower hull, seen as early as "The Reluctant Stowaway".

Because of this, and the fact that known footage of the GXII was used to represent the J2, I figure there is a legitimate range of J2 profiles, not just one definitive, authoritative J2, and one GXII.

Also, I'm sorry that I have no information on either of your questions, except to say that I saw the auction photos of the 4 foot Gemini XII, and it was missing the original dome and fusion core, as I recall.

An aside about the Derelict: how big was that? If the J2 prop used in the entrance/exit shots was Polar Lights-size, did they use a separate, larger prop of the Derelict entrance? Otherwise, that thing must have been H U G E !

The Derelict itself was betwen 8-10 feet long.
The "Mouth" could be detached so they could film the shot of the 1 foot (gemini 12) model coming inside.

The next shot is the 4 foot Hero model back when it had a set of 6 spinning lightbulbs inside the fusion core and smooth working landing gear.
They used props from the movie "Fantastic Voyage" as interior pieces inside the Derelict.

Next shot is a shot of the gear coming down.

Then after that, the shot is the end of a shot of the gear extending, and the Jupiter settling down on its gear and the shot fades to commercial...

Back from Commercial its the horrid full size mock-up with too many landing gear holes on the sides of the legs, no fins on the fusion core and no curve on the surfaces.

After the action on the Derelict, you see the Hero model first with gear almost up and the pad doors sliding shut.

The next shot is the closeup of the hero rotating around to leave, where you see the figures inside, and also a flicker from the bubbles lighting inside that shines past the edges of the removable cockpit.

The last scene of the Hero rolling a bit as it finishes the rotation to point toward the doors and it moves into the shadows where all you see is the fusion core and Bubble lighting.

The last scene shows the 1 foot job leaving the open doors on the Derelict and sailing back out into open space.

Thanks, for the info. That was a big prop! I have the VHS of this episode, and have made extensive use of the hero footage you describe.

An interesting tidbit: As the ship leaves the Derelict, you see three different Jupiter 2 models, in three consecutive shots(last one after the commercial break.) First, the model exiting the Derelict, then a deep lower-hulled J2 model, followed by the G12.

According to my October 1980 Starlog, the Gemini 12 prop (aka Jupiter 2) went unsold with a minimum bid of $500. The auction was put together by Charles Band under the moniker of "Great Sc-Fi Fantasy and Horror Movie Memorabilia Auction" held in June 1980. From emails with collector Bill Cotter who attended, many of the items were sold outright in the days following the auction. Bill related to me that he and several other bidders were after the Flying Sub prop, but the price went over his maximum bid. But he was put into contact with Greg Jein who had another one for sale which Bill purchased.

The prop did show up in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy Models magazine Irwin Allen special issue #35. The picture credits listed as belonging to Andre Dhant.
